Yepp ...van parked in front of work and the camper at the house ...neither of which I'm going to show you for privacy reasons.

On the one hand it's great, going for a drive without leaving your armchair. On the other hand I'm not particularly happy that every potential thief can now stake out my place from the comfort of their own home

EDIT: in google earth, in one of the pics when you zoom in you can even read the numberplate ...not happy about that either !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 782 ✭✭✭Cunning Alias

Just checked my mums place. Cant see much because of the massive tree in the front, but the camera looks over all the hedges of the houses on the other side of the road. I now know that a few of her neighbors have no side gates!

It will be interesting to see if break ins go up after this. Would also be a way for scum to check out what houses have nice cars to nick.

I think it's a great tool for getting around cities but has no place in residential areas.

Ah if they're going to steal it they don't need Google's help.

I can see my car at the front of my house as well, and judging by the fuel prices in my local petrol station, it's definitely last year it came through my town! Link

Yep I moved recently, but the car is outside my last place and by the looks of it it was Wednesday (bin day)

EDIT: Their reg-blurring software isn't perfect either... I just checked where my office was and I can clearly see the plate of one of the girl's cars

Yeah because thats really going to cause you a great deal of distress. You can just contact google and they will do it for you instead of going to someone else first

They used a scanner to try to identify number plates and auto blur them but you can request them to blur out a number plate if you want.

But I cant see why you'd want to.

    not quite ...

Take my house for example. Drive past it, blink, and you'll miss it because it's pretty hidden. There's nowhere to stop really to check it out either.

The feckin' google camera however looks over the hedge and there are several shots in a row, offering different angles where you can clearly see the place at your leisure ...something you couldn't do in real life without coming down my driveway (and being barked at by the dogs).

So yes ...millions of people on the internet can potentially see something that most of my neighbours who just drive by haven't seen yet and won't ever see without stopping and coming into the driveway.

That in my view constitiutes an invasion of privacy.

In my particular case there's nothing interesting (or of value) to see ...but it's an invasion of privacy nonetheless.

    EDIT:
Especially in rural locations this could have consequences. If you try to stake out houses in rural Ireland by car or on foot, you will be seen and taken note of ...now you can do it from the comfort of your armchairand pick a few spots that might warrant closer inspection

True but if someone wanted to they'd be able to get the exact same view in real life without doing anything wrong.

Your rural Ireland example doesn't hold true either, my home place is in the middle of nowhere on a road you'd never find with only 5 houses on it.

The house had to have been staked out as there is only an hour everyday where no one is there and it was broken into in that exact hour along with two other houses over the same few days in the same area, and apart from a vague report of a blue car about the place no one saw anything.

EDIT: also the fact still remains that someone would still have to stake out an area in real life as a static picture doesn't give them what they want.

And then there is the fact that the pictures are not at all recent.

EDIT 2: Get bigger hedges :D

But it gives them ideas ...and that's my point.

BTW ...I've just "driven" a bit of my daily drive on google earth and I've seen things on the screen that I never knew existed in years of driving past every day. Garages, garden sheds, back entrances etc ...all because the camera is up so high and peeks over hedges and into corners that you normally wouldn't see. I feel like a stalker now :D

    Different angle then:D

How about instead of thieves, if the governement (in this case the EPA) were breathing down your neck because some geek surfing google all day on a work placement scheme discovered your illegal scrapyard?

Invasion of privacy? Yes/no? Tick as appropriate :D

Its still needle in a hay stack territory. While I don't deny its slightly handy for a thief, they still have to target and scope out your house regardless. You stand as much chance of being broken into now as you did when this wasn't out.

I am going to have some fun with them, reports sent.

    Found this:
Blurring technology and operational controls like image removal are among the ways in which we ensure that an individual's privacy is respected. We make it easy for users to ask to have photographs of themselves, their children, their cars or their houses completely removed from the product, even where the images have already been blurred.

    We shall see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

But then it would be obvious your house is missing or even blurred and anyone looking at it with the wrong intentions will think you have something expensive to hide and that they've hit the jack pot.

You can either hit the "report a problem" link on the image itself and one of the options is to report your house being visible. If that's not working you can email europe@google.com.

I'd probably give them the chance to resolve the issue before I went reporting them to the Data Protection Commissioner so you can "have some fun with them" tbh.

Nope. My line of sight sitting in my van is a good bit higher than it is standing next to it. Yet I can't see from my van what the google camera saw of my house
