Junior has just turned 6 , he gets a reasonable amount of exercise , does soccer once a week, a gymnastic's class for boys and swimming once a week. Recently more for the fun of it and to help wind him down before bed I got him to use my chin up bar, do some pressups and some situps. He seems to like it and assuming he doesnt get bored of it, is it a good habit/useful to do at his age? Are there any well programs for kids that are good to follow in the house?

As someone who has a few kids of not dissimilar age, I think it's great that you encourage the kid into sporting activities. I think it's weird if you're asking should your kid be following a weightlifting/resistance program of some sort, and it definitely won't be winding him down before bed. I might be taking you up wrong ? Personally, and I repeat, personally, I think you should let the kid do whatever sports he wants/enjoys and not be enforcing exercise regimes on him. Childhood is precious - plenty of time for that if that's what they want to do, when they are old enough to decide if that's what they want to do.

fully agree, the plan is to let him try out as much as possible and see what sticks. He started at the Gymnastic club up in De la Salle in Churchtown and I know its an activity that a lot of kids naturally enjoy. If I get a chance I'll ask one of the trainers what their opinion is. As I said, he enjoys showing off that he can do his 10 pressups etc. so I dont see any harm in it and there is no pressure.

Its great that your encouraging your kid to take up various sports. Gymnastics is probably one of the best sports a child could do as it Improves the kids ABC'S(agility,Balance co-ordination). Regarding the press ups, pull ups etc, I personally dont see any problem with body weight or resistance/dyna band exercise. You could create a body weight-agility type circuit that is fun for the kids.

its a pity more kids dont do it here, its the kind of stuff they naturally want to do anyway and as you say it will set him up for other sports later. The circuit type thing mght be fun , thanks. Might even see about getting a junior sized Swiss ball
