The Sligo weekender ran an article on the front page yesterday about how a group of traveller practically shut down a section of the N4 at the height of the summer to race horses on the road. The horses where being followed by a fleet of vans and 4x4 driving four abreast which forced oncoming traffic onto the hard shoulder. The video of this is on youtube and has got over 2500 views already. The guards in Sligo claim to not know about this but are now loking into the matter...what are the chances of even one conviction being brought over this??

If they delayed/obstructed other motorists, were the Gardai called? if not, why not?

I've seen the video, countless road rules broken on it, some of the traffic was three abreast with a 4th traveling on the oposite hard shoulder, forcing oncoming traffic to pass between them. A major accident waiting to happen at times.

Maybe they are above the law????This race took place on the same day as Justice Minister dermot Ahearn was in Sligo, what a total joke and two fingers to the ordinary law abiding citizen. This road has had its fair share of serious accidents in recent times which makes the matter even worse. The reg of the vans and 4x4's are visible so it will be interesting to see if this is persued by the guards......I also assume that the owners of all these fairly new commerical vehicles have a business to support their need for them and can account for how they can finance them???

I've seen that video but I didn't realise that it was near Sligo. Fcuking lunatics, the Gardai of course are nowhere to be seen when needed. I guarantee If anyone of us were in that video, we'd get the knock on the door in the morning. The video is in AH - Cool Vids & Pics section, I haven't the link though.

I was surprised it made front page news months after it happened. Or maybe the video was only just put on youtube.

The story is covered in the indo today.I reports that the guards in Ballymote are "studying" the video:rolleyes:......its only just over 3 minutes long!!how much studying time do they need???It great to see at a time when the country is on its knees that the taxpayer can still afford to fund crime.

id say id would not be to hard to get the reg's of the jeeps and vans and they should lift them, there could have been a huge accident there this is a serious offence to think the cops were not phoned i some how dont believe this, the traffic corps ill hide in hedges to get people doing a few k's over yet they will not go out and chase travlers doing this on a busy main road there not only a revenue collector they have to police the roads for this sort of behaviour as well.

The section of road where the race occurred is a long and straight one. However, a few kilometres further on, it runs into an area where there have been several fatal accidents in recent years. At least 10 vehicles were behind the horses and the video camera was in front. The cameraman filming the race can be heard urging his driver to speed up.

A senior garda spokesman at Ballymote said: "We have a copy of the footage and are studying it.

"All the digits on the number plates are not readily discernible, but we are hoping to identify members of the party.

"It's a very busy road, the main one from Dublin to Sligo, and much serious delay was caused to other vehicles." He added: No doubt, the law was broken."

They're looking for them for causing a "serious delay"?? Is that even a law?

I would imagine that the van and jeep drivers could be charged at the very least for driving without due care.but then can any one be prosecuted from a youtube video

What would people be saying if this was a gang of young fella's in Type R's and Skylines , Glanza's etc sh1tehawlking on the same road. It would be a national call for driving bans imo. These scumbags should be off the road.

Didn't they charge them young fellas that video'd themselves driving recklessly and posted it on youtube? I could be wrong but I think they impounded their cars also.

The amount of laws broken in that video is ridiculous, they have video evidence, what more do they need? What is there to study? Not to mention the animal abuse issues.
The guards are always on that stretch from collooney to carrick catching people who are a few mile over the limit, where were they that day.

yes your right they did impound the cars but of course the travelers try and make themselves above the law, discrimination against their culture and such excuses, lift the jeeps and vans and crush them,if there been hit in the pocket that way it might put manners on them.

they are above the law and every one know it the gardai are afraid of them.

So what are we paying the gaurds for then? Is their job not to enforce the law? they have vidoe footage, what more do they need?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,620 ✭✭✭sligopark

some different laws I am afraid since tinkerdom (inc crime) is culture based and hence unenforceable

gippos are able to assault, rob, murder and block up the roads as they wish

and sure guards have more important stuff to do like enforce speeding laws and making sure you have your seatbelt on

Missed that myself but loved that quote from Judge Kilraine about <snip> whom he discribed as a disgrace for rearing a family of 20 (yes 20 - some small farmers have less livestock) criminals and then went onto do state he thought when he first arrived in Sligo Courthouse he thought <snip> was the care taker because of how often he saw him around the court :)

Nice to hear some one say it as it is for once ;)

Loved that piece too. Liking Judge Kilraine so far. No time for career criminals, shoddy policing or little dicator public servants. Keep up the good work.

Also, I don't believe for a second that none of the law abiding road users that met that outrageous "race" rang the Gardaí.

I also have great respect for Judge Kilraine challenging <name removed>, I know people who have the misfortune to live in the same street as him and his hooligan off springs. But Kilraine has to stop the threats and start the action, look out this year as the family are in court with some serious charges against them . Did you here they errected a 2 foot headstone on the street and it was moved after 2 years. They had been given a court injunction to move it but ignored it completely and when it was moved he only went down to the barricks and reported it stolen. Unfortunately even though the headstone was removed a new one appeared the very next day and is still there. Its just not good enough.

Thread closed, old thread and names removed from some posts. Has there been any link to the names removed and content from posts edited to the events that took place on the N4, if not, last few posts are potentially off topic.
