David Wallace has been named in the Munster squad that will travel to Glasgow for the Magners League game on Friday night.

Wallace trained today with the rest of the squad in UL and although John Hayes was in attendance he took no part troubled slightly with a back pain.

    Munster:
    P Warwick, D Barnes, D Hurley, D Howlett, J Murphy, L Mafi, S Tuitupou, S Deasy, R O'Gara, P Stringer, T O'Leary,

    M Horan, W du Preez, J Hayes, T Buckley, M Sherry, D Varley, M O'Driscoll, D Ryan, D O'Callaghan, B Holland, A Quinlan, P O'Mahony, D Wallace, J Coughlan, N Ronan, D Leamy

    http://www.munsterrugby.ie/news/7955.php

Still coming to terms with the fact that a Munster match is not televised. Connacht fans, I can appreciate your position far more now.

I'm certain a development/second string side will be selected and some key players rested as the following 3 weeks are huge. So I'd go with:

    Horan
Sherry - He needs experience as it looks like he could be our second choice hooker for a while.
    Buckley
    MOD
    Ryan
    Coughlan
    Wallace
    Leamy
    Stringer
    ROG
    Murphy
    Mafi
    Barnes
    Hurley
    Deasy

    Varley
    Du Preez
    Hayes
    Holland
    POM
    TOL
    Warwick
Tuitupou - Not dropped, just rested. Last Saturday he showed some good signs.

I think Quinlan should be used sparingly because he's that important to the team. As is Howlett.

I'm confident of a win, Glasgow look like they are going backwards at the rate of knots. Losing against Connacht won't have helped their confidence.

Are you coming around to Murphy at centre Thomond?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,881 ✭✭✭PhatPiggins

Sorry you have him on the wing.

this wont be an easy for munster, glasgow will want to bounce back for the connacht defeat.

i can see a upset on the cards in this match

Nah don't think he's a centre tbh. I'm hoping he was picked there out of necessity rather than a long term policy.

I don't think any of the games he's been part of have be conducive to decent backline play but I would prefer to see him at 11 or 15 tbh. He'll still start at 13 again at the weekend I'd hazard.

I would actually prefer him to start at 13 than have Tuitupou and Mafi together. We don't want the JdV-Mafi situation of playing two inside centres again.

    Delighted to see Wallace return.

Re. TV coverage, will we have delayed highlights frrom Setanta, also, will there be any TMO if required during the game?

No I never want to see that again. Would rather Mafi on the wing then at 13

I think the problem was more the fact that Mafi was at 12 and his distribution is awful, making it irrelevant who is outside him (he made Earls look poor last year as well compared to JDV). I think the answer will be clear when Earls is back, freeing up Murphy to play on the wing.

I think Mafi has a future on the wing as well, he looked good there at the end of last year. His days at 12 should really be over

Hard to say he looked terrific with Tipoki, out of position with JDV but JDV looked gash at 13 when Mafi was at 12, and hasn't really gelled with Earls yet. I'd be slow to write him off as a centre because in theory he should make plenty of space for Earls.

Needs to stop the kamakaze rushes when defending though. You know what he's probably too hot headed to adapt, the wing might suit him best.

I was thinking the very same thing. Although if Setanta have delayed highlights there will have to be camera's there - although it could be the one camera in the stand trick used to film AIL league matches, no footage good enough for a TMO with the one camera trick.

I think Glasgow are bound to lash back here, at home , with Munster probably with one eye on the following 3 weeks games. Still 4 points here is the same as 4 points in the Aviva and this game is imminently more winnable.

Agree, however, Glasgow are our boogy team and by beating Leinster we'd be keeping more daylight between them and us at the business end of the league, I doubt Glasgow will be in the top 6 places at the end of the season.

Oh dear ... there was a leinster game last year that wasn't telveised due to being rescheduled ... think it was the glasow game. I was at it and the ref had an absolute shocker ... you could tell he wasn't that bothered knowing that he couldn't be challenged on anything afterwards.

    Glasgow_warriors_badge.png VS Munster_rugby_badge.png

Munster have named a stronger side than I expected. I would have thought they would have rested more players with the next three games to come being so massive. It is good to see Quinlan rested. It shows just how important he is to Munster now. I think he will be used more sparingly this season to keep him fresh for the big occasions.

I think the team is quite close to who will appear next week (with Quinlan to come in of course). With Jones out, Warwick should be our first choice fullback with the much maligned ROG at 10. Of course, it's still a mystery as to who our first choice props are. I would have preferred Coughlan to start at 6 to stake a claim for next week and beyond with Wallace at 7. Coughlan did well when he stood in for Leamy last year.

Mafi at 13 is an unknown quantity. I would have thought from the failure that was the Mafi-JdV partnership that the management would try to avoid playing two inside centres together again. Maybe Mafi was struggling with that shoulder injury for most of last season. Tuitupou looks a good signing so far and it will be interesting to see how they combine.

I don't see Glasgow being much of a threat. The spine of the team has left or are injured. For the first 40 minutes of their game, Leinster displayed Glasgow's average averageness (vocabulary fail I know :p). Should be an interested test at scrum time where Buckley got manshamed last season.

    So, Munster by 10.

    Glasgow Warriors:
15 Bernardo Stortoni, 14 DTH van der Merwe, 13 Max Evans, 12 Graeme Morrison, 11 Federico Aramburu, 10 Duncan Weir, 9 Colin Gregor,
8 Richie Vernon, 7 John Barclay (c), 6 Robert Harley, 5 Richie Gray, 4 Tom Ryder, 3 Moray Low, 2 Fergus Thomson, 1 Jon Welsh

Replacements (from): Dougie Hall, Ed Kalman, Kevin Tkachuk, Aly Muldowney, Ryan Wilson, Calum Forrester, Henry Pyrgos, Ruaridh Jackson, Rob Dewey, Peter Murchie.

    Munster:
    15 Paul Warwick, 14 Doug Howlett, 13 Lifeimi Mafi, 12 Sam Tuitupou, 11 Johne Murphy, 10 Ronan O'Gara, 9 Tomas O'Leary,
8 Denis Leamy (capt), 7 Niall Ronan, 6 Davis Wallace, 5 Donncha Ryan, 4 Donncha O'Callaghan, 3 Tony Buckley, 2 Damien Varley, 1 Marcus Horan.

Replacements: 16 Sean Henry, 17 Wian du Preez, 18 Darragh Hurley, 19 Mick O'Driscoll, 20 James Coughlan, 21 Peter Stringer, 22 Scott Deasy, 23 Denis Hurley.

    Date: Friday, 24 September
    Venue: Firhill
    Kick-off: 19.30
    Referee: Carlo Damasco (Italy)
Assistant referees: Andy Ireland (Scotland), Graeme Marshall (Scotland)

Academy hooker, originally from Sligo. Oddly, there's more Sligo players in our Academy than Waterford ones.

Academy guy. Apparently been playing well with the Munster A team. I think Michael Essex is still injured....

Essex left the Academy two years ago and didn't get a contract, Sherry is the guy who's ahead of Henry in the HEC squad.

No mention of coverage of the munster game on Setanta Ireland, or Setanta Sports 1 later. The Ed V Lein match is being shown on Setanta Ireland @ midnight tonite...

mustn't be any cameras at the munster game :(

Is there a radio feed somewhere ye'er listening to or is it just the live scores from that ye are looking at?

Seems like a much better game than the Leinster one. I wonder how they decided to show that one instead
