When Did You Get Your PS1/2/3 Thread

A thread dedicated to remembering the time when you first started playing the PSX console. Which console did you have first, when did you purchase it, can you remember the circumstances behind it and what your first game purchased might have been?

We got a PSX in our house just after Christmas 95 (they were sold out during the holidays and my Dad was the one who originally wanted it), I remember there only being a handful of titles available to get out at that time.

The first game we ever played on the PSX was Twisted Metal which was part of a bundle offer that we got. We'd normally play a game until it was finished and then swap it, getting something else, because of the high price of the games. We also rented titles at the time quite a lot.

The console was bought in Electronic's Boutique, on Dawson Street, and in old Irish pounds was somewhere in the region of £350 altogether.

It was never replaced, and it was the first machine I ever played Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid on, as well as other great PS1 titles like Resident Evil. My Dad eventually decided to trade it in, for a new PS2, although by that time my brother had moved on to an N64 (which would later become an XBox and then a 360) so I was left to my own devices with the PS2. First title I purchased for that was Extermination.

My mother rented our PSX from extra vision for a fw months before Santy brought me one at christmas from the local ESB on tick

God I miss the good aul days of Ireland before it was ruined by people not bringing rented products back and messing companies over with store credit :(

    Crash bandicoot, GT, MGS, C&C

Beating the absolute snot out of my brother for overwriting my memory cards

The first day I got my 'chip' and was talk of the town :)

I actually don't remember the specifics of getting a PS1. Must have been Christmas, although I recall it coming with a copy of Abe's Exodus.

PS2 I remember far more vividly. It was Christmas of launch year, and you couldn't get your hands on them if you hadn't prebooked. As a youngster, I had settled on a few new PS1 games. On Christmas morning, there was a copy of Silent Scope (I know, I know, but I was obsessed with the arcade game at the time!) sitting at the fireplace - no PS2 though. Cue disappointment, and sad looks at my parents for adding insult to injury. Meanwhile, my brother went into the other room to turn on whatever FIFA game he had just gotten, only to find a PS2 sitting on the couch in there :)

PS3 I bought in HMV one rainy day last September :pac: Much less interesting.

I got my PSX when I had my confirmation. I remember getting Ridge Racer Revolution and Destruction Derby with it. I loved those games at the time but man, have they aged terribly!

I remember my PS2 was a present from my mother but she didn't want to give it to me until my birthday. I found it in an upstairs drawer and I distinctly remember staying home one day, 'sick', to play it. I carefully opened the box and found it had a copy of GTA 3 with it [My mother had no idea what it was, bless her!]. Of course, I was very surprised and grateful when I got it.

As for the PS3, I bought it with my first proper paycheck out of college! No big story, payday came around, walked straight from work to the nearby Argos and went home with Motorstorm and Resistance.

don't think i had the PS1 at launch but pretty close i was working my first summer job on a building site and was getting paid 178 pounds a week which in those days was basically millions. At around 15 i had nothing to spend it on other than games and sweets and there are only so many sweets you can eat.

PS2 was got at launch by the missus at the time (also got me a launch 360). Traded it up to a slim model as it had become a bit wonky from using swap disks.

Traded the slim up to a PS3 on launch day and purchased a 2nd slim PS3 when Gamestop ran that silly 30euro trade in deal.

PSP was got about 6 months after release it was lost during a break in at the house i replaced it with another PSP original and picked up a GO this summer in Harvey Norman for 150 in a sale.

Parents bought me PS1 and 2 for Christmas, on the year of their launches.

    Bought the PS3 myself.

They were all bought in Smyths, even my PSP. Given my hassle on the "other thread" I will never get a console in there again.

I asked for a PC upgrade in 1998 I think. Got a PS1 instead. Might not have been what I wanted but I was happy with what I got. Loved the machine and it replaced my PC.

I had no interest in a PS2 when it was launched, thought the DC was way better and it really was. The PS2 launch lineup was absolutely pathetic. Then just before christmas a year after it's launch GTA3 and DMC were released on the machine and I knew I had to have one. My mam gave me money to buy my own christmas presents as long as it wasn't any videogames. **** that, went into town and got myself a PS2 and devil may cry.

PS3 I had no interest in either. However I was in Boston a year after it launched and decided I might as well get one for 100 euro cheaper there. I bought it and for a whole year Uncharted was theonly good game on it. Absolute waste of money. Should have waited until about 6 months ago and got one cheap but at least the good games are coming out for it.

PS1 I bought my self when i was about 7 or 8. Its was a good while after it launched. I had a mega drive before it but used to play ps1 at my friends house and really wanted to get one. So after saving up money I got for birthdays and communion and stuff I final bought one. First game I got was the first crash bandicoot.

PS2 was a christmas present. Think I got it the year after it originaly came out. Got timecrisis 2 with the gun controler with it.

PS3 I bough myself, got it in xtravision with uncharted.

got a ps1 at christmas 1995 with fifa 96 *shudder*

used to buy all the playstation magazines that had playable demos with them, and for the first 6 months or so of my playstation life i pretty much exclusively played them and rentals. though after that i discovered that if you bought a game, played it and finished it in a week and then brought it back to virgin saying "my auntie got me this for my birthday but ive already got it. she didnt have the receipt" they'd let you exchange it for another game, no questions asked

used that method for about 4 years, it was great

never owned a ps2 though. i fell out of love with gaming around '99 and didnt really get back into it properly til 2005 so missed out on that whole generation

bought a ps3 when they dropped the price a few years ago, before i managed to fall into game journalism. though since then ive managed to buy another two ps3s (as well as 3 xbox 360s)

We got our PS1 in 1996,as a sort of bribe by mam's new boyfriend(step-da now!)at the time.
It had the first F1 game and had FIFA 96 aswell as the demo disc with Porsche Challenge on it.Me and my bro thought all our christmases had come at once!

PS2 we got in 2002,wanted one desperately for X-mas but couldn't find one for love nor money as we hadn't reserved one, think we finally got one in Smyths just after new years.Got the latest WWF game with it if I remember correctly.

Currently thinking about getting a PS3 cos I've grown tired of my 360,probably wait until the new pro-evo comes out in a few weeks and get it then though.

PS1 I got from my confirmation money in 1997. Got Die Hard Trilogy with it because someone in school recommended it.

Got the PS2 on launch day with the retina burning SSX. I'd put my name down on a pre-pre-order list and I think they were meant to contact me to look for a deposit, but that never happened. Ended up getting the mammy to fight my corner over the phone, and it worked :) I wonder if some poor GAME employee ended up PS2-less that day.

    Not got a PS3 yet.

I can't remember when I got my original ps1. I think it was around my communion so maybe 97ish. Can't remember what games came with it either although I played so many classics: MGS, Tomb Raider (F*cking loved 2 and 3 to bits), Crash Bandicoot etc.

Got my ps2 after my confirmation, paid for most of it with that money. It must have been near the release date because I got the bundle with MGS2, where the ps2 box had MGS art all over it.

Bought the ps3 myself a few months after release with money from working the summer and birthday. It was still the insane €650 then.... Kicking myself now that it's so much cheaper. Got it with Resistance 1, which I thought was brilliant, and Ridge Racer 7 (which isn't great).

Good times. All though definitely fonder memories of getting the older ones.

    I got my PS1 in March 1999.
I hadn't been to bothered with games for a while being a teenager was too distracting. As I remember I got a copy of V Rally with it.

I got my PS2 in November 2001 which came with a copy of GTA 3.
The promise of MGS2 sold the system to me and remains my favorite ever game.

My PS3 arrived in October 2007 with a copy of PES 2008.

I'd say that the PS2 was the best value for money console of the three and the amount of exclusive titles it had blew the competition away completely.

    Glazers Out!

Got PS1 back in 97, after renting the one out in the local game store so often they didn't bother looking for deposits anymore. Got the bundle with FF7, coolboarders 2, Crash bandicoot 2 and Porsche challenge. Can still remember being upset because I couldn't find the installation disks in the games (I had played FF7 in a mates on the PC and KNEW it had 4 disks)

Got the PS2 for Xmas the year after they came out. Got the Bouncer and Jak and Daxter. Bought another 4 of them as they would be broken, overplayed and in one case, thrown out a window by a frustrated mother trying to get her kids outside.

Got a launch model 60GB PS3 after patiently explaining to my mother EXACTLY what to ask for when they came out for xmas. Was the guts of 700 quid so she bought a HD tv too and said it was for me and my brother and sister. Great idea in theory, till we all moved to college and the fights began. after getting a full time job, went out and bought me a slim PS3 there at xmas and haven't looked back.

    Nice thread :)

PS1 - Can't remember the year but it was Santy that got it for me after playing it in a mates house. Played the sh!t out of Die Hard. I remember about a month later my Da got "a fella in work" to chip it. He must have been getting games for dirt cheap because I use to get about 10 new pirated games a month. Me and him were a great team on the PS1, I remember playing through the Resident Evils. I use to do all the shooting because he was hopeless with the controls and he use to do all the puzzles because I'm thick as a plank :D

PS2 - The Christmas after GTA3 came out was when I got this. Again my Da bought me this even though I think it was part for him aswell. I remember when he bought it and he put it under the Christmas tree and told me I wasn't allowed play it till Christmas day. I bunked off school early one day and got into the house to see him with the PS2 hooked up to the telly giving GTA a right oulde bash. He said he had to test it to see if it was "faulty" but I didn't believe him :D

PS3 - A few months after it came out, I got a 60gb after saving up all me hard earned money. Had to get a 250gb slim when that YLOD'd.

You be happy to know I baught my Da a nice new PS3 about a year ago to go in his new apartment. After him buying me the first two, I taught I owed him the new one

Never had a PSOne. A mate of mine just up the road had one and we'd play FIFA/Metal Gear for ages.

Got a PS2 at Christmas one year. All the presents were opened and my dad came out with this big bulky package and said, "for the family". There was a PS2 with Gran Turismo, whichever the latest one was and The Mummy Returns... The less said about that the better.

I kinda got out of games then and rediscovered it by buying an Xbox 360 and I got my PS3 about a month and a half ago with Resistance 2 and Uncharted.

Great console. Have no preference over either.

PS1 brother and me drove over to River Valley and bought it, RES1 and Gameday (US football game). Resident Evil just blew us away. Shortly after bought TR1 and still remember the shock at how good that was when playing for the first time.

    PS2 - can't remember. That's odd.

PS3 - Liverpool beat Everton in an early Saturday kick off. Me at home alone drinking like a loon during game. Walked down to Power City (2 miles) with two bottles of beer for the journey and bought it with Resistance Fall of Man.

PS1: mid 96 from what I remember, one of my mates got one for Christmas 95 (i think) and we were all blown away, first games I got for it were Tekken, Wipeout and Warhawk which I loved. remember this?

I remember spending ages playing with the T-Rex and manta ray tech demos.

PS2: Xmas 2001, was working in HMV at the time and blew most of my first paycheque on it, got Smackdown: Know Your Role, GTA 3 and Tony Hawks 3 with it, still have all three of them :D

PS3: Christmas 2009 had a 360 from 2005 until then, but got tired of it and wanted blu-ray and there were more ps3 exclusives that interested me. Bought the phat 250gb version as I didnt want the slim, came with inFamous, got Unharted 1&2 (UC 2 was the first game i played on it as my flatmate lent me his copy, had intended to just play a bit of it but finished it over 2 nights, absolutely loved it), MGS4, Dead Space and Killzone 2 within the first few weeks of buying the console.

Is it just me or does anyone else get really giddy about turning on a new console for the first time? just to see what the startup screen and interface is like?

Cant remember where or how I got the PS. Which is odd, i can remember getting an atari?
I know I got my PS2 in smyths after saving for about 2 months in my first job. Killed me to pay it. Think it was about 400pounds :( Could not afford a game for it and had to wait another month to buy one. Think i got timesplitters then.

I got a PS3 last December after my nephew got one for christmas. My 360 was also on its last legs at the time (rrod)

Got my PSX and PS2 at launch, as a gift from the parents and splashed out on my own PS3.

Had to get a new PS3 only a few months back after the BRoD.

I remember the excitement of opening the box to my PSX, and setting it up and playing for the 1st time.

    :o

got my PSX and PS2 in Smyths and got my PS3 from Game. Ah the memories.

I got a PS2 for it birthday in 2003 and I got GTA 3, rachet and clank and tekken tag tournament, and I got my ps3 in Christmas 2008 and I got resistance 2, COD WAW and FIFA 2009 with that.

I remember this came with the machine as a freebie alright, I believe some people even consider them collectors items now

I was more of Smackdown then Attitude, although I did play Attitude upon it's release...I remember the graphics in Smackdown, at the time, blew me away...

I also remember I got the X Files one Christmas as a present (I would of been about 14/15 and I was a huge X Files fan), it cost £45 at the time or maybe it had been reduced to £30, but it was Christmas 1999 and was the same time the game had been released to the PS1. In any case, I played it all Christmas Day, and had it finished by tea. I remember being kind of disgusted that the game was so short....especially since it took four discs to fit all the footage on....

I think we got our first Playstation for Christmas '96, but that's a faint memory. I was only 5 at the time. :D

Our Playstation 2 was Christmas 2001, I remember we got GTA III as well, what a game it was (and still is).

Our Playstation 3 was gotten November 2007, with PES2008, Formula one, and Motorstorm taking over the house for a few weeks.

That got the YLOD last June which I did fix for about a day. But after a few months contemplating, we eventually got a PS3 slim about two weeks ago.

I got my PS1 around christmas '98. Picked up FF VII, MGS and I think Future Cop LAPD.
Vagrant Story was one of the best games on that system.

    Can't remember when I bought my PS2.
Tons of great games on that system. MGS 2 (I liked it), MGS3 - my first online gaming experience, great fun except for Ocelot and his fvcking bouncing bullets.

Waited for MGS 4 to come out before buying the PS3.
Picked up a slim a few months ago, when my phat YLODed.

We never had a PS1 or any other console. My mum wanted us to have educational computers so instead of having a Snes or later a PS1 with cool games, I had a Commodore 64 and later an Amiga with a crappy word processor:(

So when the PS2 came out I had to have one. So I blew a large chunk of my first grant cheque from college in 2000 on a PS2. I didn't have to move away from home for uni and I couldn't believe I was getting free money from the government so I put it to good use:D

I got Gran Turismo with it and was blown away with the graphics but I got a bit bored of it and gaming didn't really click with me until a good while later on my lunch break in town I wandered into Game on Dawson St and saw a preowned copy of GTA3 for a tenner. I vaguely remembered hearing something about that game so I bought it and was blown away.

I had well and truly left college by the time the PS3 was released so there was no more free money from the government to buy one. I got a 360 for Christmas but never really liked it as the fan sounded like a jet engine. Thankfully last year Gamestop had that ridiculous PS3 Slim preorder deal and I managed to nab one for the princely sum of €41 euro which I had spent buy crapping DS games in Smyths to trade in for the PS3 slim. :)

I have a hard time remembering, but from what i can recall.

PS1, didn't get it the first Christmas but i played a lot of Tekken 2 one day at a friends and then decided to get it with my own money which i got by trading all those squirl saving stamps to my dad to get real money. I got Porsche challenge, Jurassic park:lost world, and Tekken 2. I had a great time playing it and got a lot of use out of the demo disc with the pirate ship game, never got the game but the demo was great.

PS2: i was more informed and knew it was coming out but i hadn't the money for it at launch had to wait a few weeks and saved money and begged my parents for the extra bit of money. I don't have a clue what games i got, i think Tekken Tag was one of them at least and i remember getting yelled at for something and frantically looking for a scart in the box, but i sure that i wasn't getting at yelled at due to that.

PS3: i was there at midnight outside Smythes and got home and playing by 1:30am. Got 2 sixaxis, Hdmi, heavenly sword, resistance 1, and virtua fighter. I hate the fact i got virtua fighter it was €75 and not that great.

My wife bought me a ps1 for Christmas in 1997 (Only it was just called Playstation back then)

She bought me a PS2 for Christmas in 2001, and a PS3 for Christmas 2007.

So she's been constantly feeding my habit, but then whinges and moans when I want to play it!

2 years ago I bought a Sony Bravio telly, and what came free with it? Correct, another PS3! So now I've got 2 of them
