i rang in august to enquire about cancelling my membership (it was too far out of the way) and was told that all i had to do was ask for it to be cancelled, i did so at the time and was surprised to find out that i was still charged for september (my 13th month).

after writing a letter of complaint i got the following back:

Further to your recent letter regarding the cancellation of your joint Total Fitness membership.

We confirm that Total Fitness membership agreements are for a minimum period of twelve months and will automatically renew on your renewal date.

Please note that your Total Fitness Membership Agreement, signed by you at the time of joining, states:

‘Any request to cancel membership outside the initial term of membership must be in writing giving one full calendar months notice to central administration or emailed to membership@totalfitness.co.uk. No other form of communication will be accepted.'

Unfortunately, we have no record of your request to cancel, for the reasons stated above, we will not be able to refund any of the monies paid.

We are sorry that you feel you want to cancel your membership and confirm that your membership subscription will be cancelled on the 30th September 2010.

The September 2010 instalment was the final payment collected in order to complete your one calendar months notice, as per the terms and conditions of your membership agreement.

We thank you for the interest shown in Total Fitness and hope you may return in the future.

im raging but technically they're fully within their rights, anyway this is just a heads up so hopefully nobody else will get caught out

This happened to me with Westwood. Told me I had to pay for another 3 months.

I just cancelled the standing order with my bank. Easy peasy.

Here's a tip - if you're paying direct debit canel that first then cancel the membership!
