Did you leave the grill on?
Ah well, if the house burns down, least you'll know you were right that something was burning.

    Take no chances!!

If you're on the second (or higher) floor, jump out the window IMMEDIATELY - don't worry about your safety, all will be fine!

If you're on the first floor, leave through the door. Then climb up to the roof and jump off IMMEDIATELY. Don't worry about your safety, all will be fine!

If you're in the basement, you're probably one of the Fritzl family. You should probably wish for fire!

I've checked everything, plugs, sockets, cooker, etc., etc.
    Smell seems to have gone.

But thanks so much for all of your help and support.
I'm not sure I would have go through this minor trauma without some of you... you know who you are.

Are you sure it's actually YOUR gaff? Could it not be a couple of kids with a bin outside?

Well eh.. check about 30 feet around the area and if you can't find anyone/anything give the fire lads a call. Just explain you keep smelling buring and are worried. Worse thing that happens is you get laughed at. If you're alone I'd call them soon TBH; better safe than sorry (BUT MAKE SURE YOU MENTION IT'S A SUSPICION). If you're on a laptop/pc, check the heat if it's okay then it's not that. After that I'd check the lamps and the lights, if it's still not those, just throw in a lamp instead of a light for safety sakes then double check all other appliances.

Everything seems fine, no smoke or fire. Burning smell seems to have gone.
House is still standing, which is comforting!

Could have been someone burning straw, hay, silage wrap? But it's a bit early for that.
Any neighbours have a range/open fire?
If ours is lit I can usually smell smoke or burning when I'm outside so if you had a window open or anything you could have been smelling that.

I read somewhere* that if you can smell burning it's the first sign of a tumour. Best get it checked.

*may have read it on the interweb so it's extremely likely that it's bull****...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,178 ✭✭✭✭NothingMan

It's called Phantosmia, and can be from drugs, Head injury, Head and face reconstruction, Head lice, Indications of head injury, Radial head injury, seizure, or tumor. You should see your doctor, a neurologist if possible.

Your front door is on the first floor? Sounds a bit dangerous.

Check your knickers drawer, could be a spontaneous combust from an accumulation of gusset gas in a confined space.

Slightly vinegary smell will confirm this.

Don't strike a match or use anything electrical.

Woman two doors down lost the whole Ann Summers spring catalogue over this, firefighters said she was lucky not to lose the house and advised her to hang the garments in an airy place as the the gusset can become unstable after the minge oil dries and tends to powder.

    Check it out.

had a pretty severe head injury last year - smelling smoke all the time was one of the weirder symptoms - its pretty disgusting, apart from simply annoying. i also lost my sense of taste and smell but its come back very gradually and i reckon i'm now 90% of the way there.

    thats my 50c anyway
