Oh my God so me and some friends were just talkin about college and stuff yesterday, one in NUIM, me in TCD and someone else in UCD and out of the blue the guy from UCD was all "UCD's actually better than Trinity as a college" (being totally serious like not joking around at all) and I just "Eh, wanna justify that?" He said some stupid things that didn't mean anything significant and I just said "Ok, I'm done this is stupid 2 words, league tables." Then he said "They're totally misleading." Anyway this went on till he left. This kinda thing always happens!!! UCD people I know always jump down your throat when you've said NOTHING!! Like insecurity or something... This happen to anyone else? It was just so annoyingly unprovoked.

If you know anyone in UCD get the student diary they got in the orientation or freshers' week and check out the list of things to do before you leave UCD. Massive chip on their shoulders, though I'm sure they'll say they're just joking.

I know!!! Their humour literally consisted of swearing alone. Not an ounce of cleverness. He actually started quoting the thing too. He's just started like 1 week ago. I'm second year TCD. Good line it was "UCD ball makes Trinity Ball look like a Dublin Debs." Quote from the UCD diary... I for one do not need to defend Trinity ball. It's just not something they can realistically compete with. Why though? Why do they slaughter all logic when they argue that they're better? Oh I remember how it started, he said how they were better in Science I think it was and I was like "How I saw the rankings? (HUGE distance between TCD and UCD) That's a lie" Oh and also, UCD has aloso "beaten Trinity on numerous occasions in the rankings"... The claims just get better...

I did my BA in UCD and I'm finishing my MSc here this week, so I might have some insight to offer on both places.

Anyone who says; UCD is better than TCD or that TCD is better than UCD, is a fucking idiot. UCD does some stuff better than TCD, TCD does some stuff better than UCD. All in all is more or less the same thing. It's pretty pathetic to have a chip on your shoulder in what place you end up in because they're more or less the same, both places are riddled with the same inefficiencies and nepotism.

Also, the UCD diary thing is 'written' by probably the most stupid people on the planet, whom I'm sure will form the next Fianna Fail coalition government in twenty years time.

By the way, anyone with half a brain knows the rankings are absolutely rubbish.

As someone who, is very happy to report, has a fully functioning, operational, complete brain I don't see why rankings are rubbish. I mean on what grounds are they rubbish? They're peer reviewed, standardised. They are a relatively fair way to judge which establishments are the best, what exactly is wrong with that? I mean they are totally reasonable and show the overall success of the university. It's like saying winning doesn't matter. It's the same as me just taking a notion to declare Trinity is better than Cambridge. If not for the rankings, how can anyone tell me that I'm wrong?

Similar things are written in TCD for that matter IIRC.

To the OP, it's just mindless crap written for a laugh, only idiots take that shít seriously. As amacachi said, its a joke in all honesty. It's to rouse a bit of banter FFS; there's a history of rivalry and colours debates reflect that (although not as good as they used to be).

And yes, the rankings are rubbish. For you to base your argument on that is laughable. You do know the constituent categories on which the rankings are created??

By the way OP, you're nearly as bad as your friend shiteing in defending Trinity. It's a non-argument and a childish one at that. Both universities are great, but at different things

And similar to El Siglo, I've studied at both so have an objective viewpoint.

I get people trying to tell me that NUIM is better than Trinity. Now whatever about UCD, they're probably roughly the same, but NUIM is definitely not near that standard

Is this thread indicative of 'the standard'?

I didn't think it was possible...

Inferiority complex has always been acute at Belfield tech. Something to do with the campus looking like a concrete gulag and being located miles from anywhere except a mosque and a motorway, I suspect.

I'd have assumed that with the creation of umpteen other edyookayshunall establishments in Dublin, like that Ballymun journalism and science college or the DIT, that the UCD crowd could have overcome their own insecurities by way of feeling superior to even lesser colleges.

But apparently that's not the case.

As for rankings, you can query individual ones but when they all agree (with separate methodologies) they're probably right.

TCD (in most subjects) is better than UCD.

UCD equally is better at some stuff than Trinity, and miles better as a whole than any other college in Ireland apart from Trinity. I note that on an organisational research basis, the two have become one anyway, which is wise in the modern international research climate, where both Dublin colleges aren't exactly setting the world alight very much.

tl;dr version: TCD v UCD stuff is ghey, ghey, ghey. Ye're all thumb-sucking yokels compared to Cambridge or Harvard. Get over it.

OP, you go to Trinity. That, for some reason, is enough to anger most people who don't go to TCD. Best course of action for you when you come up against that sort of attitude is to just smile and let them rant. By feeding into it you're justifying their attitude; as if its actually worth the effort of debating. Which, if you haven't gathered, its not. Both are great colleges, and we are lucky to have two such institutions in a country this size.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭Jev/N

I had to LOL at the OP's debut post on Boards, on none other than Letterkenny IT forum! :pac:
What's your impression of Trinity College and it's students?
Are the stereotypes true? My cousin goes there and says people presume she's extremely snobbish without even knowing her. They hear Trinity and presume she's extremely pretentious and elitist. What's your opinion/

A UCD student tried telling me that UCD is better than TCD because "UCD is a university, Trinity is technically only a college". Right then, the University of Dublin doesn't exist . Same person is very much anti-TCD for no reason whatsoever.

It probably stems from years ago when only rich people went to TCD but people need to get over it - you can't buy your way in nowadays and the contingent of D4s/posh students is probably equal in both!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 740 ✭✭✭star.chaser

They're all pretty much the same at UCD and TCD.

    Fixed your typo.

Would have to query this. TCD gets more 'posh' foreigners - rich Yanks, British gentry etc, but there is absolutely no doubt that UCD has cornered the market in the Ross O'Carroll Kelly set.

Is there anything even to be said? TCD is good at some things, UCD is good at some other things, in the grand scale of it neither is spectacular and squabbling over it is incredibly immature.

    Oasis or Blur!

    Okay I'll stop now.:D

Let's cut out the 19th century styled thinking chaps. TCD UCD NUIG UCC, Limerick and (apparently DCU and NUIM) are all very good universities. They all have different strengths and weaknesses. People taking the Colours seriously need to get out of college.

There is a rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge. Just imagine what fecking idiots anybody from either institution would look attacking the other in anything other than light spirits?

This whole Trinity is/isn't better than everyone else is ridiculous and quite annoying! Every University has it's positives and negatives and it all depends on the person as to where they go and why. My first choices were Trinity and UCD but I ended up in NUIM and I know think it was the best thing that happened to me. It's such a ridiculous drama that people cause over "my university is better than yours"!
