Crap chips

I just had a rotten bag of chips from my local chipper. Thats it im finished with that dump. I won't say who it was because its probably against the charter rules to name & shame. Every single chip was tough skinned with sharp corners. Like eating lamenated cardboard. The battered sausage was mostly batter & a pathetic anorexic bit of pork entombed within.

All i can say is the place has been surviving on its once deserved reputation of doing great food for the last few years but its slowly but surely become a slop house.

How the fcuk can a chipper not do good chips???

Im off to do a bit of self harm.

how far away from the chipper were you when you noticed the "bad" chips ?

You have Mc Donagh's in Galway, best chips I ever had.

People say it's not as good as it used to be though, which is a shame.

I still dream of Fish & Chips there with mushy peas.

That's what they taste like when you go to a chipper sober, they always taste fine after a night on the lash.

The only chippers that do good chips are proper Eye-talian chippers, oh and Burdocks aren't too bad either.

We need a Campaign for Real Chips, i.e. parboiled, chilled, double-fried fresh potatoes.

Anything less is not worthy of the name "chip".

IMO the three best are Luigis in Ranelagh, Borzas and Burdocks

I hate metric chippers that use cheap frozen processed out of the bag cut to size chips. I prefere imperial chippers that cut up real potatoes with a knife. :p

Our local chipper changed hands recently, quality and quantity went down the toilet altogether. I now have to travel to get a decent pack.

Yeah, a couple of Turkish fellas run a chipper in my local town. They do everything well, except chips. They look golden brown and crispy but then they taste like complete shíte. (The chips, not the Turkish fellas)

Just took a valium to calm my nerves.:pac:

Nah its not that bad but its very annoying to come home with bad chips from a so called reputable establishment.

Especially when you can't return them straight away. Theres another place which is only round the corner but they're even worse. Ive taken food back to them & got the money back twice in the last year.

There's that too - used to travel to Galway two or three times a year for a weekend on the piss. Funny thing was if you went in to Supermacs for a greasy cure during the day it was complete muck but if you went in after a feed of beer it was only savage. For a couple of years I was convinced they only put the good cooks on after midnight! :pac::pac::pac:

They are very nice though alright. But no where near me unforunatley.

Sounds like you got some re-heats OP.. disgusting, and very annoying, this used to happen to me in Beshoffs on Westmorland Street, used to meet my Dad there once a week and he bloody loved the place .. it's gone now TG.. Burnt down a few years ago iirc.. probably re-heated a batch of chips one too many times  :pac:

Bad chips from a chipper is an increasingly more common problem. A rake of places just use crappy bought in frozen in a big bag chips. FFS. Have some pride in your product and do it right.
OP do you reckon they were actually prepped there, peeled and chopped and that, or just mushy bought in frozen crap?

Yeah in hindsight i think you are correct. They're a crafty bunch because this place is set up in such a way that you can't actually see the chips frying.

Actaully thats exactly what they were, fcuking re-heats.

Right so, more self harm....oh thats a big cut!

. Every single chip was tough skinned with sharp corners. Like eating lamenated cardboard. :

this bit made me lol. I can just picture you getting to the last one thinking maybe this is the one that'll make it all worthwhile.

They can't have been that bad if you managed to eat every single one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 715 ✭✭✭_sparkie_

at least they had chips. i went into the local chiper last week and asked for a bag of chips the woman behind the counter told me they were out. WTF!? a chipper that runs out of chips?

I'm clearly the only one who thought that this thread was going to be about craps chips, as in the ones from Vegas. Yes, yes I am drunk, and your point is?

mmmmmm Ritz Chips, oh I used to love their onion ring that looked like a batter burger, but alas, it is no more :(

I know what you mean, but there is a kinda unwritten rule that says zou bought them, paid for them, so you gotta eat them...

I dont work in a chipper but any chipper worth it's salt will prep it's own chips not only because they taste better but because they return a higher GP. So any chipper not doing it must have a very strong reason (or could be pure lazy and will go out of business anyway).

Then there's frozen or chilled, or you can buy them chipped and vaccumed from the Veg supplier. There's all different sizes and and if you go fresh you can go so far as to pick your variety. A chip is never "just a chip" :D

Rule of thumb. If you cook chips, cook what you actually need and stop selling re-heated shíte.That's where these donkeys think they are saving money when in actual fact they may have just lost a regular .
