Join the phil or the hist, get there free pizza, ignore the committee members or anyone volunteering on their behalf, use there comfy couches and talk to other freshers who have been given this advice. Then when you have done all that never step foot in there again unless you are very hungover and need to sleep on the aforementioned comfy couches or want to play cheap snooker.

There is very little you actually have to do during Freshers' Week (including the sports/library tour, but it is recommended to attend them), it's mostly just a chance to join societies and check the place out. The various societies will be running events all week which is mostly what's going on, so an idea for Monday might be to find out what the schedule of such things is.

Step in where? Does it not all happen in front square? Where can you play snooker/pool on campus? :pac:

The Hist and The Phil will have stands in front square but they're located in the GMB which is just off front square. That's probably where they'll have all the free pizza etc and they have snooker/pool tables somewhere in there too apparently!

The pool soc is an associated society and will have a stand on front square. The tables are on the top floor GMB but (as far as I know at least) are not associated with the phil or hist.

You really don't have cough up all that money to join the phil or hist btw... it's far from mandatory and when it comes to socs they're pretty expensive. They're just debating societies, so if that doesn't really interest you then save your money and stick to the ones you actually might like. You can always join at a later date.

How much do the Phil or Hist charge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,418 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

Me thinks the most important thing to do is to REGISTER everything else more or less depends on that

Yeah cos it'd be useful to have your Trinity email for societies.

Stupid question... but what if it's raining? How do the stands work out?

    Thursday here

Same here. Just wondering, what do we need to do in registration? o_O

Do we only need to tell them our Cao Number and ensure we have paid the fees? (do we need passport etc.?)

Just CAO number and bring that survey thing if you have it. You'll get a picture taken and be given your student card, and I think the library tour is straight after it.

There was debate of this in another thread.

    Bring:
    CAO Number
    ID
    Proof of Payment
Be ready to fill in questionnaires(you may need a phone to ask your rents stuff)
    Proof of grant if applicable.

I think thats it. Check your guidebook for more.

    Nah.

I think the Phisters were a bit more. Maybe, 5 o 6 euro? Anyone want to step in and clarify?

I think BioSoc was a fiver as well? Possibly maybe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

It was €5 a few years ago for the phist. I can't imagine it's gone down. Most socs will be about €3

Oh yeah, forgot, bring one questionnaire with you.

The other, the HEA one, as you see on page 23 states:
"You may wish to discuss these with your parents or guardian; even if you are an adult/mature student you are asked to answer on a parental background"

I'm gonna bring my ePay receipt, and confirmation if/when I get it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 311 ✭✭H2student

    Page 33 no?

Yeah I'll try to bring that receipt with me, if I can find a printer. I'll just write down the log number of the transaction in case I can't print it out.

The Phil's 6 euro, the Hist is 5 I think, it might be 6 euro, not sure. These prices are for 4 years of college, once your name is down on the membership list it stays there for 4 years. Keep your membership card for at least all of freshers week. The 4 year membership is how it is in principal at least, the logistics of this can be a bit dodgy in practice.

The pool tables are on the second to top floor of the GMB; you go up all the stairs, and through the white double doors on your left. Once inside the hallway, There are pool tables on through the left door and snooker tables through the right one. It'll be free to play during freshers week.

Will be in to get the traditional bag of free crap tomorrow that the student union hands out every year.

And whatever else I can lay me hands on for free.:D

Can anyone recommend something to do tomorrow night besides the traffic light balls?

If there's nothing you want to go to, don't feel like you have to go out. Just save your money for the days/nights that there is stuff on. I've no idea what's on tomorrow night, so I've nothing to suggest.

The traffic light ball is probably going to be good, but the VDP people are apparently doing a "cable-tie pub crawl" from 5.00 tomorrow:

I'm looking forward to the Traffic Light Ball but not wearing the colours as I couldn't find anything green/orange. Stickers and facepaints will do me fine!

Hope the rain doesn't ruin things tomorrow :(
