Will be great watching Gebrelassie in this tomorrow, and I presume he's red hot favourite...but does anyone know what form Fagan is in? Is he fit?

Plenty of Irish listed in the elite field

Big Irish entry alright, 14 in total. Are we planning on sending a team to the world half marathon championship? Is this a trial or something, it's all our leading guys.

Hopefully it will be a competitive race. I would have Geb and Yamauchi as favourites. Big contingent of celebrities taking part, plenty of soap stars as usual, Nell mc Andrew is taking part she is a pretty decent runner she is close to sub 3 for the marathon

Is it on TV? What time? This'll do nicely as a substitute for my long run.
Wasn't it the North run last year, where Fagan led the field for a while and took the Irish half-marathon record?

    It's on BBC1 at 9.30am until 12 and then later from 1.40pm-2.25pm

Pity Andrew Ledwith isn't running. I was hoping to see him try and run a quick half marathon after he won nationals.

It's part of the "Marathon Mission". From the AAI website:

Martin Fagan (Mullingar Harriers) will be looking to compete well against some of the best distance runners in the world in Sunday’s 30th BUPA Great North Run in Newcastle, England.

Fagan will be looking to put in a strong performance in the iconic half-marathon event which will have upwards of 54,000 runners taking part from all over the world.

Fagan will have competition enough on Sunday to potentially improve on his Irish Record for the distance of 60.57, set last year.

He will be joined by a ten strong squad of Irish athletes from the Dublin Marathon funded ‘Marathon Mission’ group.

The athletes travelling over for the high-class competition and team-building exercise are: Barry Minnock (Rathfarnam/WSAF), Greg Roberts (City of Derry), Brian McMahon (Clonliffe Harriers), Gary Thornton (Galway City Harriers), Joe McAllister (St Malachy’s), Maria McCambridge (Letterkenny A.C.), Barbara Sanchez (Raheny Shamrock), Caitriona Jennings (Rathfarnam/WSAF), Breege Connolly (North Belfast Harriers) and Gladys Ganiel O’Neil (Abbey A.C.).
Jim Aughney, Dublin Marathon Race Director, said: ‘The race will have real quality in depth and bring our Marathon Mission athletes on before the Dublin Marathon in October’ . AAI’s Teresa McDaid, who will be travelling along with Dublin Marathon Coach Dick Hooper for the event, commented: ‘The benefits of travelling as a group are important in search for individual PBs’.

It is hoped the trip to the Great North will assist in furthering the spirit and aims of the Marathon Mission; to improve the standards of Irish distance running; the marathon in particular.
The race will be shown live on BBC television on Sunday morning.

I think it might be part of the 'marathon mission' plan:

No that race was in inland somewhere

No, that was in The Hague last year. A record on the Great North Run would not count officially because of the elevation drop and the point-to-point route.

That was meant to read Holland.

Wouldn't mind running this myself sometime in the future. Every year I say I'm going to look into it but always forget. Has anybody on here ever ran it and if so what are your opinions of it?

1040 elite men's start, something to look forward to after the 0800 Sunday LSR. Lovely :)

Its a good course for a fast time if thats what one is looking for. There are not many opportunities in Ireland to run a fast fall half marathon. Also Allistar Cragg will aim to break the Irish half marathon record tomorrow afternoon Irish time in the Phily Rock and Roll Half Marathon where he will compete against the likes of Ryan Hall, Gebremariam among others.

    Regards Woodchopper

Looking forward to this myself. Will have to be up early to go shop and go for a jog and be back for 9.30am.

Looked like a "Yelling-???" name on one of the womens bibs there. I guess that is Liz Yellings daughter, is she actually any good then?

Liz Yelling daughter?! Sure she's only 35. She'd be hard pushed to have a daughter who's competitive at this stage!

It's her sister-in-law. She won the European cross country championship in Dublin in 2009, after coming out of retirement. She also won the title in 2004, and narrowly missed out on selection for the olympics twice. (Guess who listens to Marathontalk!).

Oh and Hayley Yelling is 11 months older than her 'daughter'. :)

Sonia is finally of, she could struggle a bit with all the traffic though.

Good run by Adere, she hasn't been at that level in a while. Geb is cruising, thought he would have more a challenge than this

Apart from those seemingly drunk Sunderland fans she gave everyone else a god headstart.

Was wondering when they are going to move those pot plants out of the road, but the mass finish is actually at a different point on the grass. Does that then mean everyone else is not officially doing the same race as Haile?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 886 ✭✭✭Caprica

Not bad for Fagan, 63:23, he done well to beat Martinez. Surprised that Geb was so far ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

Good run from fagan, beating the silver medalist from barcelona, just shows what might have been.

Nice run by Fagan, in around 62 mins for around 6th or 7th place, two place ahead of his McMillan teammate Lemoncello).

Only caught the build up earlier. Nice to see Bazman warming up in close proximity to Geb and the various Irish lads beside the great man at the start. You'll remember running a race with him in it.

The Irish done pretty well on the whole

    Fagan was 7th in 63:24
    Thornton was 14th in 65:24
Mc Allister was 19th in 66:24
    Minnock was 23rd in 68:12
Mc Mahon was 33rd in 70:21
Craig Mottram and Christ Thompson came home in 88:45

    For the ladies
Mc Cambridge came home in 9th in 74:32, ahead of Dita and Hayley Yelling
    Jennings 14th in 77:47
    Sanchez 16th in 78:06
    Ganiel 18th in 79:20
    Connolly 20th in 83:01

Pretty decent performances. Sonia has just finished, she passed 25,000 people. Being interviewed now. The finishing straight is jammed pack with runners.

Glad to see him running well, think his track days are over now so focus on the Marathon in 2012 could have a handy group or runners for london.

What would a realistic target be for Cragg in the Olympic Marathon?
Aleksey Sokolov, who has won Dublin a few times, was 21th in 2008 with 2:15.

I personally think its time to forget about Cragg in an Irish Vest. He has had his chances. We should concentrate on the younger hungry guys like Fagan, Thornton, McAllister etc. Im sure if and when they get the chance they will give it their all as they did today. Great to see them getting the oppurtunity to mix it with these guys in the Great North Run.

Joe Mac is the same age as Cragg and Thornton is a year older so it a little unfair to say that. The guy has been disappointing on the track in recent times but we have to remember that he has posted the fastest and 3rd fastest half times this year so i think there is a glimmer of optimism to draw from that. It will all come down to how he reacts to championship races on the roads but i think tactics wise this can be a little more forgiving on him and may actually suit him better

    2 22 Chris Thompson GBR 8:32
    3 23 Andy Baddeley GBR 8:34

    5 26 Collis Birmingham AUS 8:40

A lot to be learned from that. The 2 boys obviously ran it as their Sunday long run...2min a mile slower than their HM pace...hands up who did their LSR so 'slow'. So much to learn from the faster guys

Heard the commentators mention that the guy who won the wheelchair race, David Weir, competes in all events from 100m to marathons, impressive range of events. Pardon my ignorance but is that normal for wheel chair athletes?

I'm still wondering how Sonia managed to pass over 25,000 people, she must have run through them almost!

Cragg is frustrating but come on, compared to Thornton & McAllister (good athletes in their own right) he is in a different league and if those guys are good enough they will qualify for a majors and focusing on Cragg or not will not be a factor in that. The jury is still out on Fagan and whether his focus is on championship racing. Great if we had Cragg, Fagan and one other in the marathon in London.

I said the same after the euros but how can you say no to a 62 min half marathon man, I know 2012 olympics would be great but If we could get a good marathon team into the euro's we could be close to a team medal.

I think you are kind of right there Gringo but when it comes to guys like Mottram and Thompson you are neglecting to mention one key thing i.e. that they have already done a phenomenal amount of high intensity running during the week.
They don't get their specificity from a long run like a marathon runner does.
For better or worse most people posting on here are not 10k and below specialists so while there is a point to be made I don't think its a 100% fair comparison to make. You might find the interview below interesting, especially the section on training:
