EPL Match Betting Challenge (Week 5) - Manchester United vs Liverpool

The game voted for this week is between two rather unknown, Manchester United vs Liverpool :P

    * The match is live on Sky Sports 1 and kick off is at 1.30pm this Sunday. *

United at home, have performed very well in the league, notching up 2 wins out of 2, scoring 6 and conceding none, albeit against lesser teams in Newcastle and West Ham. There was a much changed line up vs Rangers mid-week in the Champions League, United looked rather lackluster and in general were very poor against a stubborn Rangers defence and so will look to bounce back from a disappointing week with a win against the enemies.

The one real injury note for United is that of Antonio Valencia who suffered a horrible injury mid-week and is out for the rest of the season.

As for Liverpool, while I'm the first to admit we've been very poor for the most part this season. I will remind everyone how poor we were last season and yet despite that we won at Anfield and gave United a scare at Old Tratford with an early Torres goal.

The most interesting thing from our perspective will be the center midfield partnership which I have no clue what Woy is going to decide on and tbh has me most worried.

Torres will surely start up front after missing the Europa League game mid-week, 3 goals in the past 3 games vs United is an interesting stat

Kuyt is our one big injury and will be a loss, as he would have been up against Nani which will be a key battle down that side.

    Betting on W/D/L:
    Man United - 8/11
    Draw - 13/5
    Liverpool - 4/1

For the odds of all the bookies, see the link
    http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/premier-league/manchester-united-v-liverpool/winner

One things for sure, the form book most definitely goes out the window for this one so good luck with the bets, unless you have United to win ;)

Been looking at a new strategy lately where I've spotted some books offering ridiculous odds on the score / win double on key strikers where the away team is a pretty big dog (according to the sportsbooks). The bet will involve looking to trade in running on betfair.

Manchester UTD v Liverpool fits the bill for me where the Torres/Liverpool double is on offer @ 13/2 generally but at 12/1 on Betfred. I'll be backing this and if Liverpool take the lead with a Torres goal, I'll be laying Liverpool on Betfair. Or even if Torres manages to score an equaliser in the second half, you should be able to trade out and double your money.

If you pick the right games and scorers (Look for games where if the underdog side does take the lead, there is a good chance it will be through a key striker), this should be a nicely profitable strategy in the longrun. More advanced type bets on my blog this weekend for anyone interested.

Whether I put a bet on, IMO Liverpool Double Chance @ 11/10 (PP) is a great value bet considering both teams are in no great shape atm.

Also keep an eye out for any specials offered over today and tomorrow because last year PP gave an enhanced double odds special on Torres scoring 1st @ 10/1  These games normally have a fair bit of interest in them

Good bets there from Headshot(Vidic booked) and Fowler(LFC Double Chance).

    Anyway, some bets I liked..

Time of First Booking: Up to and Including the 27th minute @ 4/5

    Reasoning?

    howard_webb.jpg

:P In short, he's a terrible ref especially the bigger the game is.. he seemingly goes even more loco with the cards than usual. We'll no doubt see some early *cringe*blood and thunder challenges so I expect this bet ^ to come in.

    Sky Sports MOTM: D Fletcher @ 9/1.
Fletcher usually stands up and is counted in these big games. He has popped up with the odd goal in the big games in the past also.

Understandably Scholes is 5/1, Sky Sports cream themselves on a regular basis for Scholsey and laugh off any poor challenge. A half decent performance with United winning and he'll still be in contention for the MOTM award.

Torres Insurebet is 11/2! 3 goals in 3 matches vs the Mancs as mentioned in my OP.

    Half-Time/Full-Time, there are a couple of decent bets. Draw/Man U @ 10/3 and for a fun bet, Man U/Liverpool @ 55/1 is worth a nibble.

gone with a few 1euro scorecasts

    torres & 2-1 75/1
    scholes & 2-1 50/1
    fletcher & 2-1 66/1
head says a 2-1 utd win!!

I was reading that all Vidic's cards came against Torres and were tackles from Torres skinning him. With Torres not on the same form as last year is he likely to be flying past Vidic throughout the game? Not trying to put people off the bet as the statistics back it up. But when i read that it made me a little cautious. Any United or Liverpool fans know if there is any truth to them all being against Torres?

When Vidic got sent off at OT in the 1-4 defeat, I think he hauled down Gerard & possibly Aurelio scored from the resulting free-kick.

Sending off is 3.85 on Betfair, also there has only been one draw in the last 20 meetings . Unless soccerway.com has fecked up.

Might interest some of you. Just got this e-mail from the Manchester United Supporters Trust, who have teamed up with BetFred.
    Dear MUST Members,
First of all I'm delighted by this new association with MUST and honestly I hope to be paying out a few quid to United fans this season. And what better way to kick-off the relationship than with a game against the Scousers. Let's hope we all leave Old Trafford smiling on Sunday after beating Liverpool. The Scousers have paid for my holidays for many years and let's hope this continues. In fact Liverpool have not won the league since the back pass rule was introduced which says everything to me!

I know lots of you will be having a bet on the game and I've created a special offer for United fans having a punt on the first goalscorer. Place a bet on that market and if the player you back does score first and then goes on to find the net a second time, I will double his first goalscorer odds. Also, if the player you back scores first and goes on to complete a hat-trick, the first goalscorer price will be trebled! It means that if Wayne Rooney opens the scoring, he's 7/2, and gets a second goal later on, you'll be paid out at 7/1.

I love Rooney but my favourite player has got to be Paul Scholes and as another special offer for United fans, if he scores first you can have 18/1 when really he should be 11/1.
And if England's best midfielder got a brace you would be looking at 36/1. In terms of the match prices, United are 8/11 to resume winning ways, with Liverpool 9/2 and it's 5/2 for a draw.

Much has been said about Fernando Torres' lack of form but it worries me slightly that he has scored in the last three games against United. Let's hope we can shut him out. But I think it's more significant that when United lost three on the trot to the Scousers, Darren Fletcher was absent each time. The Scot was back for the 2-1 home win in March and that shows how influential he now is.

I can't wait for Sunday but finally just like all United fans I would like to wish Antonio Valencia a speedy recovery.

Both teams to score in the first half @ 5.00. PP.
    Draw 1-1 HT result @ 8.00. PP.

In the past 2 encounters at Old Trafford both teams have scored in the first half. Each game also finished 1-1 at half time. Potential to complete a hat-trick on either or both of those bets this time around.

Liverpool to score first and fail to win @ 3.50. PP
Man Utd to score first and fail to win @ 3.40. PP

This has happened a few times in encounters between these teams. One takes an early lead and then ends up losing. The odds are too short for it to be worth picking both. Not sure who i'd favor to score first. I'm leaning towards Liverpool for some reason.

    A penalty awarded - Yes @ 3.10. PP
    A penalty scored - Yes @ 4.00. PP

Not great odds but it should be a fiery game with some clumsy challenges. There have been a few penos between these teams throughout the years and there is good potential for one tomorrow.

Man Utd to win and Nani to score @ 5.00. PP
Man Utd to win and Berbatov to score @ 5.00. PP

With Valencia out Nani will probably step in and if he has one of his good days he could get on the scoresheet. He's more than capable and dangerous on his day. Also Berbatov seems to be doing some things right so far this year and finding the net. His confidence should be high and he shouldn't be missing the chances he had last year in light of that.

    Over 2.5 goals @ 2.10 PP

Quite surprised at these odds given that both teams have looked shaky at the back and have been conceding goals that they really shouldn't be. It should be a tight game but i can see 3 goals in this. I have a feeling there will be an early goal before either team gets settled.

Both teams to score @ 1.90. PP

Given my reasoning for some of the bets above i see both scoring at some stage.

Not sure what or if i'll bet on the game but the above stand out for me.

Nani is 4.6 just to score on Betfair, in the unlikely scenario that he scores and Utd dont win :P

Also he's 13.5 for first goal which is great odds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,341 ✭✭✭El Horseboxo

Yeah i quite fancy Nani to score and at 4.6 i'd most certainly advise anyone to drop the United to win from it. This fixture is just too unpredictable. Probably end up 0-0 or something.

I have a betfair account but i rarely use it. I know PP don't give the best odds but i'm just used to their lay out. I should really spread my money around and start using oddschecker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Kod-box

For the goalscorer markets Betfair is definitely better anyway, not great for handicaps as they have very little variety and obviously theres no money back specials like PP do, although ive never really benefited from them, that i can remember anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Kod-box

    i did Nani 1st 13.5, anytime 4.8 both betfair

but my NAP is Scholesey 18/1 betfred (paying double/treble for 2 or 3 goals), anytime 6.7 Betfair.

Couple of bets today - United/City/Chelsea treble @3.2 and Berbatov to score any time @2.8.

Might go Nani any time as well.

l went for man utd to win and chelsea to win to nil both at 8/11 with pp's in a double..

the double works out at just 2/1.

l like the chelsea part of it especially.

Apart from the aforementioned Vidic to be booked bet, I'm all over both teams to score at evens.

Liverpool are barely in Uniteds box, Vidic isn't having any chances to get booked :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,224 ✭✭✭✭SantryRed

FFS. Right. I noticed at the beginning of the game that Torres was marking Berbatov so I went to look on PP for Berba to score the next goal. I then looked up to watch another corner and I see Torres rising majestically in the air above Bervatov to head the ball away. So I thought fcuk it there goes my theory. Then Berbatov goes and scores from one :(

Liverpool are shocking at the back. Wrong side all the time, the corner back glances over and sees Nani or Rooney or whoever free on the wing and just stay where they are. Pass their over head, cross into box and goal. Remind me of Dublin with their lazy marking.

A few of the bets i mentioned here came through. Didn't do anything though.
