    Hi,
Wondering which is better to get general fitness up?
I think cycling but have nothing to base it on.

    cheers,

    Depends.

Minute for minute, running is way out in front. You'll get fitter, burn more calories etc. But it's much more likely that you will actually cycle a hell of a lot more than you will run.

Cycling also has the advantage that you don't need a high degree of fitness to start, so someone with a lot of weight to lose can cycling without wrecking their knees. And you can use it for transport, so you save money on parking/bus fares.

There have been a lot of days when I wasn't feeling 100% and would never have gone out running (to be fair, I hate running) but got on the bike, promising myself that I'd take it very easy, not push myself, just coast along. And once I was warmed up, I hammered along at my usual pace.

However, if you are talking about running on a treadmill v cycling on a gym bike, go for the treadmill.

As Eileen says, it depends. Running is more intense; road cycling is different from the stationary bike...etc.

I just thought to post here a link to Hermann Maier's post injury routine. He was a world class skier, and he had a very bad motorbike accident in 2001 when he almost lost his lower right leg.

What brought him back to Olympic level competition was a stationary bike! He became so good in it that in July 2003 he was the first nonprofessional cyclist to enter the prologue of the Tour de France! :)

    His routine is described here:

There is a video with pics of his leg, and his post injury training...etc:

I am not saying that bike is better then running. It is just one of the examples when bike helped more, that's all :)

    All the best!
    Giggi;)
