I've been following Brittany Novotny's campaign for a while now, and it's fantastic to see she's getting some great coverage like this. and while it's obviously important to me that she's transgender, that's not the main reason why I'm following her with such interest, it's that she's running against insane homophobe Sally Kern who says that homosexuality is a greater threat to america than terrorism.

I'm really hoping that Brittany can win, and if she can do it in somewhere as conservative as Oklahoma, that's a big step forward for LGBT people, but it's also an even bigger win for everyone if she can boot out this lunatic Kern who believes that there's some secret cabal of homosexual millionaires attacking her!

watch the video, it's amazing that someone in office can believe such things

maybe a lot here won't be interested or really care about something going on in Oklahoma but I think it's very interesting and I really hope Brittany will win.

You hope she'll win? What are her policies, outside of obviously promoting LGBT issues?

    LEAVE BRITTANY ALONE!!!! :pac:

But seriously, I think it's mad how all these God espousing loons hop on the band wagon and tell us that Jesus would be appalled by this sort of thing, surely, using their logic, God created mankind, so if someone is gay does mean that God made a mistake? I think that's what's at the core of their bitterness to be honest, the fear that their infallible creator made a mistake. (in their opinion that is, I'm not saying gay people are a mistake before anyone attacks).

This is another sex change advocacy thread - beyond that policies don't come into it. Would be my guess.

actually, one of the interesting things about her is that she's not basing her campaign on LGBT issues at all, but economics, public education, transport and infrastructure.

have a look here about the issues she's talking about

    Why?
    Just because she's transgender?

Right. While i don't agree with the honourable Sally, it's hardly a policy to just vote vor the other person.
She makes some 'potentially' good points. Maybe there is a syndicate of rich homosexuals pouring money into Brittany's election fund.
    I don't know.

    Why?
    Just because she's transgender?

    Well, yes and no.
It would be dishonest of me to say my interest in her campaign has nothing to do with the fact that she's transgender, I appreciate and respect her for that, and I think it's important that real transgender people are visible, but it's not just because she's transgender.

I mean, there's other transgender politicians that I have no interest in, and don't have respect for simply because of being transgender. like Donna Milo for example: http://www.queerty.com/donna-milo-is-against-gay-marriage-even-though-she-once-had-one-20100524/

I think Milo's an idiot and a hypocrite

I don't think the real reason for you following this campaign, or having an interest in these candidates has anything to do with politics. After all, why would it? It's Oklahoma ffs. The real reason is...your interest in all things transgender related is becoming somewhat tiresome to read. (On AH at least)

Yeah, I should have added a  or :p

She's a bit like the Aviva stadium. They took lansdowne road and got the builders in so it could self-identify as the aviva it always knew it was. The address is still lansdowne road though.

A-fcuking-men. It would be like me posting about WW2 every other day in afterhours or someone into cars posting about cars every other day in AH. This in my view is why there are other specialist forums.

I have a very big interest in LGBT issues in general because they are important to me, I've been following debates about Prop 8 in California even though it's over in California.

what are you saying, "don't talk about things that are important to you"?

    I am massively interested in cars/formula 1/music.

I take them to the specialist forums. In case you think I'm being negative towards LGBTs, I'm not. I just don't care sufficiently about it or the issues relating to it to read about some politician in America who happens to be transgender. Maybe its just me, but I don't see how this is deserving of a thread.

There's plenty of discussion about LGBT issues on After Hours all the time, absolutely loads of it. in fact, some of the biggest debates going on here are about LGBT issues, so as far as I can see AH is a suitable place, and I don't see why I should be singled out and have my thread dragged off topic on purpose because people don't like it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,706 ✭✭✭fonecrusher1

This is AH you are going to get stupid replies. You are going to get people joking about the topic. You are going to get people who just don't give a fcuk.
Yet you always act as if you are surprised & annoyed at the general reaction you get in After Hours & then go on a lengthy crusade, arguing with anyone who does not see things as you want them to see things.

This thread: Absolutely destined to become a bickering match.

Im into cars & the outdoors. I go to those specific areas of boards to discuss them.

I think youre being singled out because of
    a. the video relates to oklahoma, not irish issues.
    b. it relates to a pretty specialist subject, of which you can pick either:

    i. American politics
    ii. LGBT.

There are other forums for this. Maybe I'm the one who's wrong, but I don't think AH is the place for something as specific as this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭Links234

yeah I expect stupid replies, but is it so wrong of me not to expect people to pull the thread completely off topic because they're not interested in it? it seems a very petty way to act towards anyone.
and again, there's plenty of LGBT related threads on after hours already and have been as long as I've seen,

    would you?

I'm curious as to what you consider a 'stupid' reply. I haven't seen anything so far I would consider stupid, inflammatory, or nasty. The only negative comments have been in relation to the specificity of your thread, not so much the content itself.

    And I wouldn't.

Why are you talking about this particular election and not the 100s of other elections going on with crazy Right-Wing Republicans involved?

If this person was running against someone other that Brittany Novotny, but this replacement was the same as Britney as far as the issues go, would you still be talking about this? I really don't think so!

Yes, and if Sally Kern was up against a 45 year old straight man, would you automatically support the 45 year old straight man. Yes you probably would, if you still cared about the outcome of this epic political duel.

Depends. Her opponent Sally Kern is a very hateful bigot, if someone else who was fairly level headed was running against Kern I'd still be paying attention, if it was someone who was as bad as Kern then probably not because it would be a failure either way

Why do you guys have such a problem with me posting about things that are of interest to me, where you have to dive on my thread, announce how you don't care/it doesn't interest you, and drag it off topic on purpose? do you go into forums that you have no interest in and start a thread saying how little you care about that forum? I doubt it.

so if you've no interest in this thread, how about you just don't bother with it? I don't see why you want to sabotage it

Theres no malice in it. Its the same as if I came on and posted a thread with a video of Kimi Raikkonen talking about possibly coming back to Formula 1 next year. It'd be swiftly moved to the Motorsport forum. Your thread is very specific, as I have said already. I don't see how it is of general interest to anyone who isn't interested in LGBT issues, or anyone who isnt interested in Oklahoma politics.

EVeryone watches TV. it's a part of everyone's lives. As is fashion........... and everyone knows someone who has come out.

But the Oklohoma elections....... not very personal to the general AH public. Politics forum perhaps?

what he said. TV can be discussed by the general populace, everyone can relate to their best friend coming out, and everyone wears clothes. It's not extremely specific either.

If the TV show thread turned into a discussion about a show/presenter etc, a mod would step in and turn it back to the general discussion. There is nothing about Oklahoma elections that is accessible to the general Irish boardsie.

It's obviously not about politics anyway because if it was, you'd be talking about all the other, just as important, political battles going on.

The difference here is that the candidate is transgender and you say you want him/her to win for this reason........... it kinda flies in the face of equality!

If i said i was just voting for someone because they were white, i'd be racist!
