Jappa music...any suggestions?

hey there, I'm back (<--the lass of the "manga as gaeilge" lol)

i'm quite into listenin to music in japanese, go háirithe j-rock, j-pop songs, so I was wonderin, what about you...? I mean, sometimes when I'm multitaskin here i use to listen to j music to relax a little...coz it's a language i dont speak, so the lyrics wouldnt catch my attention that much lol and i'm currently in need of suggestion of good japanese groups/singers to search coz i've got very few songs here actually...do as infinity, suga shikao, yui, anime songs too xD...what else?

For background music, I'll throw on any number of J-core/Touhou remix albums.

Favourite albums of mine would include Crimson Hardcore, Hardcore Syndrome 3 and Nekology for J-core; Fanatic Hardcore Black Label, Chaos Flare, and Lycoris -リコリス- for Touhou.

Also check out the J-rock band Boom Boom Satellites -- they sing in very good English, and they know what makes a good beat!

I'm not really into J-pop/rock at all. But Kitaro does a nice blend of ambient new age and trad' Japanese music.

I completely agree with you about the lyrics thing. I hate when decent songs are ruined by poorly written lyrics. If I haven't a clue what they're saying, I don't get annoyed. (It is kinda strange when you look up the lyrics for a song you like and they turn out to be really weird though... Tsurupettan >> <<)

L'arc en ciel are good. As are Maximum the Hormone (although they wouldn't exactly be relaxing.). Boom boom satellites are great as well.
My favourites are the songs around Touhou and Umineko.
My absolute favourite song just happens to come from Touhou.

Here's some random Umineko tracks I enjoy:
The full opening for the Visual Novel
Worldend Dominator- Progressive trance track. Great song.
Hope- This one's a lot more relaxed.
Thank you for being born- This always reminds me of Dear You. Kinda like a musical hug =D
Far- Thought provoking, and a little melancholic. Although that might be a result of the context its used in.
Ruriair- I really like this one. Sounds less emotional than most of the soundtrack, but maybe the contrast makes it cooler.
There's a lot of variation within the BGMs and surrounding music, so if you look around there'll definitely be something you like. Or you could be like me and love all of it XD

I really liked the two songs they played in the culture festival episode of Suzumiya Haruhi! Joe Hisaishi's film scores are usually good. I also like the score from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, which was by actor/musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, apparently a big star over there. I do get the impression that a lot of J-Pop/Rock is really bad.

I particularly enjoy umineko no naku koro ni, that’s turned out to be my favourite song in Japanese ^_^ maybe coz it quite reminds me of Luar na Lubre, one of my favourite groups ever

your “absolute fave” one is very good also, gone to my playlist ^^

Kinski – I’m truly grateful for the film track suggestion, it’s always nice to come across a new sort of Japanese music, other than anime/rock/touhou

K.O.Kiki – interestin information, coz now I’ve just found out I’m not quite keen on j-core tech xDD anyway thanks for the touhou and all the danceable songs

Azure sky – fair play, kitaro knows how to blend ambient w/Japanese folk. I’m taken to his songs now lol

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, the full opening.
Don't say lazy, from K-ON. I've never seen the anime, but I love how energetic the song is.
La Divina Tragedia. Another Umineko song. Just... OH DEEESIIIRE. That just about sums it up.
A version of UN Owen was her? by the same guy as above.
Drink it down- My favourite song by L'arc en Ciel.
Highschool of the Dead full OP- The anime's not for everyone, but the OP is excellent.
Discode Version IV- I prefer this to the regular version. Not entirely sure why, but still.
Shinyaku no Yoru- My favourite of the Umineko Motion Graphic songs. Most people prefer fantasm or Not in sight without love, but not me.

Just a couple of general j-rock songs that I can't get enough of:

Lycaon - Plugintothesocket
Abingdon Boys School - Blade Chord

I think at least a fifth of my iPod is filled with pure j-rock so there's way too other many kickass songs for me to mention!

edit: Actually, on that note, is there much of a j-rock fanbase in Ireland in general? I don't know a lot of other people into it.

I would definately recommend some of "The Pillows". I first heard them in the anime "FLCL" and as a group I think they are phenomonal.

While a lot of what has been posted here is good stuff, I'd like to point out that the majority of these songs are otaku-type music; not mainstream or well known in Japan at all. Not that there's a problem with that. The Pillows is a good exception.

Try out the Yoshida Brothers for some awesome shamisen/modern music. They're not incredibly mainstream but they are very, very well known. And they're bloody awesome.

Boom Boom Satellites (electro/electronic rock depending on the album)
Mass of the Fermenting Dregs (90s style Alt Rock/Shoegaze/Post Punk)
zts (Techno type stuff)
ZUN (Touhou musics :P)

1. Seriously? there was an article about a japanese singer/computer program.. in the irish paper?

2. If theres anything to listen to in japanese it would be Vocaloid. Seeing as they have well over 3000 songs or so, you'd want to have a listen, and theres something for any mood your in from really light hearted and happy, cheerful to deep hardcore rock and fast paced trance, techno, everything!

Seeing as he referred to it as a computer program, I'm guessing he knows. It's probably something like how all the Vocaloid songs aren't written by the same person, or else that there are a number of different voices used in Vocaloid.

Both statements there are true,
1) All the Vocaloid songs are not done by one person, but indeed many,many people, and is available to purchase and use yourself.
2) Yes there are many voices in Vocaloid, as well as renewed voices from Vocaloid 2 software. I should know as I've acquired every voice to date (to my knowlege) thats almost 20 voice packs in total (estimate, i cant be bothered with my windows computer to spend 30 minutes to start up to just check)
