Would you work in the new World Trade Centre?

One World Trade Centre is under construction and they will have 55 floors completed by the end of the year. It should open its doors in 2012.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_tower

Would you work in the new building considering the old was targeted twice? Do you think the shiny, bigger, better new tower may be a new target?

Somebody told me yesterday they wouldn't for fear of another attack. Personally, I would work in the new tower if given the chance.

    Lightening, twice, etc.

Although when I was looking for a new job post 9/11 (was working for a US bank and got made redundant several months after the attacks), I was sent for lots of interviews in the Canary Wharf tower, I felt uneasy being simply there for an interview not to mind working there full time.

    Yes, why do you ask?

Its not only airplanes that were used to try and topple it in the past as the 1993 bombing demonstrates....

Yes, so long as there was an escape pod in my office.

Yeah but a few planes were also hijacked and crashed on that day. So it was not just the buildings that were the danger, if you are going to avoid working in a specific building then you may as well avoid the planes too...

Yes, if only as a two fingered act of defiance to the bullies of this world.

I would work in the Freedom Tower. Airport security is now a lot tighter and I'm sure any future hi-jacked planes heading anywhere near New York will get shot down before they get a chance to crash into any buildings OR the passengers would fight back. Obviously a plane getting shot down would be aweful/tragic for the passengers and their families. :(

I would, but don't like the latest name, One World Trade Centre. Makes me think those conspiracy theorists may be onto something with the one world government, new world order thing. Why not call it Faulty Towers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,405 ✭✭✭Dartz

Sure. Direct flights to the office!

In truth. I really don't see the point of being afraid. The original WTC design was uniquely vulnerable to an aircraft impact. It was easier than for a fire to cut off access from upper floors, and the large, open-plan floor design allowed crash debris to move right through the building, and pile up against intact structural elements, where it burned. IIRC, the fires where hottest in parts of the floor furthest from the impact zones, weakening the still intact columns that were holding the building's load.

Fly a 767 into the Empire State, and the end result could be quite different. Most skyscrapers are very different structurally from the old WTC.

    I would.
Still don't know why the hell they didn't just rebuild them more or less as they appeared before, only way to respond to terrorism.

would rather work there than a lot of other places, like down a mine etc

It wasn't economically viable to do that unfortunately...

But only just over a decade after the attacks, the area will be rebuilt with a massive tower, it will be the big fcuk you to those who knocked the previous towers down :) and rightly so

TBH I wouldn't. It's unlikely to ever happen again but I would still have an irrational fear that something may happen.

OT: New York is hugely over-rated anyway. Would hate to live there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,554 ✭✭✭✭alwaysadub

    Yep it wouldn't bother me.
Chances of me ever getting a job there are very slim mind you.

Actually a aircraft did fly into it. It was a B25 bomber,I think it was the late 40s, anyway the result was Empire state 1 Bomber 0

There are millions of planes in the world. This is one building, which would be an obvious target for terrorists give it's predecessor was targetted twice in the space of 8 years.

I wouldn't work there if I had any sort of viable alternative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,815 ✭✭✭imitation

I think its safe to say you would be at a far greater risk driving into work everyday than you would be in the world trade center. I doubt a repeat is very likely, as hijacking a plane now wouldn't be so easy, and getting the amount of explosives required to level a skyscraper would also be no easy feat.

What ever way the human mind works, it seems to be far more terrified of extraordinary ways to die than the simple mundane ways that get people every day of the week.

No - I wouldn't work there, but it's nothing to do with 9/11.

The thought of working in any office block, full of people who are forced to wear suits, work in little office pods, told what time to show up and go home at & when they can eat, is my idea of hell.

as yes the American government, they can't plug an oil well leak for four months but they can highly orchestrate a precession terrorists attack

No - I wouldn't work there if I had any choice!

It's not a question of 'if' WTC is ever attacked again....it's 'when'. Because as soon as that opens, it lays down a challenge to certain groups in the exact same way as knocking it down gave others the determination to rebuild it. Its would definaltely DEFINATELY be a target that they would definately DEFINATELY make serious attempts at hitting again.

People here saying that hijacked planes are never gonna fly into it again...well d'oh! Of course that won't happen. I doubt they'd even be stupid enough to attemt that again. But they will attack it some way - by bombings or hitting it with rockets or something!

Since when did the American government get into the business of plugging oil well leaks? Last I heard it was BP who were busy botching that up.

He took a nice big tasty bite out of Biggies ‘Juicy’ on that one, except it goes ‘Time to get paid blow up like the worlds trade’ from 1994.

Id work there though, the chances of it happening again are slim to none, i cannot see them hijacking planes in that way again. Parachutes for people in top floors i think wouldn’t be a bad idea!

You cannot let these people put you off working somewhere, the day you give up is the day they win and you may aswell go home and shoot yourself as they can attack anything in life, and if you were to avoid all they attack then whats the point in living.

Now I know why they are building a mosque beside ground zero. If terrorists try to destroy it again they'll also destroy the mosque.

thats like pissing off a Muslim and holding the Koran over a fire.

"Go on hit me! because once you do it'll fall it the fire. Thats right, back away!"

€10 that a Parachute/Paragliding store will open less than a block away when the building opens it's doors.

I'd work, but I'd like a parachute and training how to use it!

I'd defo work there, lightning doesn't strike twice. You can't let these people rule your life. It's like saying you're not going out on the streets of Dublin anymore cos of all the recent shootings.

And if I was working in the World Trade centre and I saw a plane coming towards the building I'd drop my pants and wave me hoop at it.....at least that way I could say I died with dignity :p
