I don't think it exists. Fricken eBay is the problem. Possibly be happy with maybe 3.

only 3? :pac: what i mean, is like that one guitar you have that you absolutely love and would play it for hours. i always get sick of mine after a couple of months and GAS-ing for something else. I have my eyes on a nice tele at the moment ;)

I think ideally I'd quite like a a good Strat, but it's such an overexposed guitar I'm put off getting one. You can get a good single coil sound out of a Start, like a Tele, but unlike a Tele it's easier to get a fatter sound for metal. Not that Tele can't get some awesome Trashy metal tones too, but it's not quite the same.

Just picked myself up a second hand black Gibson SG Standard. I'm hoping it will be the start of a beatiful friendship. Certainly plays alot smoother than my Squire Strat, then again it would want to. Just wish a had a better amp to play it through :(.

my american strat is my perfect guitar! pickups are active emgs, HSS. love the neck, one of the nicest necks ive ever played. the only flaw it has, it that it doent have a maple neck.

This sums it up for me I have several guitars and love them all, but each one has its slight flaw. Take my '54 reissue strat, its a beautiful guitar, with a beautiful maple neck, great vintage tones, and has a wide range of tone that covers all bases for me. However tuning it is a pain in the arse, and bending a string creates a compensatory lower shift in tone for any ringing open notes. Still love it all the same.

I haven't got any one guitar that is perfect yet, as in one guitar that I could keep and get rid of the rest. I think if I wanted a perfect guitar I'd probably have to get a custom made.

My perfect guitar is the ol' Dean ML, it feels so weird to play any other body shape after them.

My superstrats and the rest of my guitars feel very left out sometimes, the ML's get most of the attention!

As for the perfect one, well my Trans Purple ML Reissue is as close to perfect as I can afford for now...

    ml_purple_custom.jpg

Its a sweet sounding guitar! Oh and my model has a matching Trans Purple headstock, for extra style! ;)

My ideal guitar would have to be a 7 string, with lots of tonal options so probably a piezo and 2 coil tapped humbuckers, or else a single in the neck. Maple fretboard, and a really nice top.
In the end I'd still want a few more guitars to have around.

I love my old Epi LP, I've had it since I was 18 and it just feels right. I've replaced tuners, pups and its been worth it I think.
Want to get a nice Strat or maybe an Explorer in future.

There's no such thing as a perfect guitar. For me, the fairest compromise guitar is my Telecaster with bridge hotrails. It doesn't have the pickups or vibrato of my Jazzmaster, but I can almost get over those with my pedal board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭boycey

Yep, I've found mine. Then sold it. About twenty times over! I can honestly say I've pretty much loved every guitar I've ever bought, but GAS being what it is, well, you know the score!

My all time favourite is all but traded on Adverts right now. Why? I need a good amp again and can't be bothered spending more cash. Its a Hamer Artist and it really clicked with me, but I can't let my other one go, and old and well worn SG.
I've had some sweet stuff over the years - Gibsons, PRS, Bacchus, Tokai, Orville, Fender etc - but special mention has to go to a cheap as chips Squier Tele Custom II with P90s. That was an awesome little guitar for the money.

but it won't be perfect until I stick a callaham bridge on it,and either upgrade the neck pickup or make it an esquire

the bridge pickup is a scorcher though! ;)

my fat tele with the humbucker in the neck can certainly cover more ground than this one though, really flexable guitar!

Serves you right there Boycey. You had a f**king perfect amp  but you sold it. I'll never forgive you... Neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

http://www.ranguitars.com/gallery/part4 <- there is an Explorer half-way down the page with a spalted (crazy paving) maple top, a plain ebony fingerboard and my drool all over it. It is the guitar that I wanted forever and when I got it I was happier than I thought I would be.

That said, it is a 100% METVL guitar. When I am bluesing out, I'd want the semi-hollow-body sunburst Tele that I played one day on a whim in Music Maker. Not that I can't get a really nice smooth tone from the Explorer (EMG 60 at the neck), but the Tele was smoother, softer, more bluesy.

Anyway. I have my perfect guitar. It's not to say that I wouldn't have another two or three if I could.

I was considering a Callaham for my Tele and ended up just leaving on the regular bridge plate and going with Glendale saddles (cold rolled steel). The guitar ended up sounding quite different and quite a bit better to my ears. The just upgrading the saddles route is quite a bit more affordable than going the whole hog. I did some reading and some guys seem to prefer the standard US vintage bridge plate with upgraded saddles to replacing the lot.

    interesting...hmmm...

it would also leave the guitar slightly more original
my problem with alot of guys (esp older players) who are knowledgeable about Tele's/pickups are looking for the stereotypical "country" sound

i.e a chisel to the face worth of treble!

my looking to get a beefy sound kinda like keef from the stones!
    I ain't no merle haggard ;)

I have cold rolled steel saddles/bridges on a number of guitars and all of them have become brighter sounding, though not in an unpleasant way, the chisel frequencies are gone and things generally sound more balanced/open/musical. It is like re-eqing the instrument response.

interesting, what saddles were on it before?
I've read that Brass is a bit fatter sounding than steel?
so I think I might get some Glendale brass saddles for it

There were brass on it before, but I would say that if Keef is your thing then the cold rolled steel would be a good way to go, it really has that grind. The brass is a bit mellower/softer sounding in comparison.

Though, I have Kinman 60s pups in my Tele which are a bit less Tele twangy than some other pickups so it might be the combination of the bridge and those pups which I am recommending to you as much as the saddles alone.

    interesting indeed!

i definitely prefer the more lively sound of the vintage one

I own my perfect all around electric. A G&L ASAT Jr. (Google it before you turn up your nose - it's one of the nicest guitars I've ever played.)

My perfect second guitar is a actual 70s tele custom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

I wanted a Jem 7VWH since I was a kid, and I have one for the last few years. Got it, set it up nicely, fitted a sustainiac, and haven't looked back since. Haven't even looked at other guitars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,740 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

ooooh that asat jr looks amazing. kinda looks like the fender jim adkins ad-90 tele, except that's a hollowbody. i'd love to just have one guitar that i could keep for a while like

I havent found the perfect guitar for me yet. Tried a few almost perfect ones, Fender Fat Strat, Epi LP Custom and a Telecaster. Will be buying a new guitar in NYC this winter looking at buying an Ibañez Af105 which is as close to perfection for me.:D

It's brilliant. The body is actually chambered mahogany, sonits extremely resonant. Even unplugged it's quite loud.

The pickups are hand-wound and are brilliant.

Plus it rarely goes out of tunes and it plays like a dream!

Love it love it love it.

I found my perfect guitar years ago but sadly I sold it. It was an Aria acoustic (I forget the model name). Despite it being a budget guitar with laminated back and sides it had a great sound and the action was perfect. It was the lowest action I've ever seen on a guitar without affecting the sound. I could play it for hours without getting sore fingers. I could whizz around on the fretboard like Steve Vai. Well, maybe not but I could change chords pretty quickly. I wish I hadn't sold it. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

I suppose i've found mine, although who knows what will happen in the future; i'd say i'll have something i prefer in a few years. Anyway it's my Bacchus G-Player, essentially a strat, but it's one of the best playing strats i've ever had the chance to play, and i love the look of it.
    Picture time!

I have a Thinline Tele with Texas Special Custom pickups that I love - it sounds lovely and breathy especially through a cranked amp, but I also have a korean PRS that I really like the neck on.
I've played "nicer" guitars, but nothing that knocked my socks off or justified me paying a multiple of what I've paid so far.

So no, I haven't found, or even been in the same room as, what I'd consider my perfect guitar.

My bog standard Musicman John Petrucci 6, none of the fancy bells & whistles just a straight up great playing guitar.
I've considered selling it a few times over the years just to try something different but could never bring myself to follow through.

    hahahaha...

You wanna know the most amazing thing?!?

It was GIVEN TO ME by G&L.

I've played hundreds of shows with it, it's a bit beat (like all well loved guitars), but it sounds and plays better than the day I got it!

Since I got it I have bought and sold:

    A Les Paul
    An SG
    A Martin acoustic
    A Gibson Flying V
    A Tele Custom
    and a few more

Won't ever sell the G&L... it's special. It just sounds better... more... I don't know... it suits me...

"have you found your perfect guitar(s)?"

    YES(well narrowed it to 4!)

A 1984 Dark Sunburst, Rosewood neck jap strat with fat 50s pickups.
A 2001 Olympic White, maple neck Jimmie Vaughan Strat with fat 50 pickups.
A 1992 Jap Squier Tele, black, maple neck with texas specials.
A 1981 Burny Les paul, black, mahogany with burstbuckers.

I can honestly say after trying every strat, tele, I now have all the guitars I need. I tried every pickup combination too but Fender Fat 50s worked best for me. I also copper shielded and did all the electrics myself, was sick of waiting for the local guy to do it..
I love the Burny Les paul too, beautiful guitar, as nice as any Les Paul I've played..
