(I'm not a vegetarian or vegan btw)
Plenty of athletes out there that are vegetarian or vegan, there are ways of putting on weight without meat or animal sourced products, its just harder but still doable!
If you don't want to give up a life choice you've kept for the past 13 years don't. Theres plenty of info out there if you look for it.

List of Vegans (I know you never said you were vegan but anyway) here including athletes

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vegans

I never knew Mike tyson & Mike Mahler were vegans!!!???
Edit:Ah tyson has only gone vegan in the last year

I know you're not looking for particular athletes or advice in that manner but if these guys can have a pro career without meat it's possible to live healthy & be a healthy weight without meat or am I way off the mark here?

There was alot of coverage on Mac Danzig (Ufc fighter) when he was on TUF & his diet: http://www.mikemahler.com/articles/macdanzig.html

Thanks for the link but Its not that I need to gain weight, I need to lose it.
The GI diet was recommended to me but Im not sure if I can do that with meat substitute..

Could be the same issue that alot of meat-eaters have, too many carbs?

I see no reason not to start eating meat again.

I know you obviously have your beliefs/reasons for becoming vegetarian perhaps to do with how the animal is treated. As with some religious beliefs there is now a large selection of halal/kosher certified meat available.

If you are desperate to remain off meat - then a protein powder can help with your protein intake.

    Best of luck

OP, are you a vegan? If not then there's plenty of milk, eggs, cheese etc you could be eating. If you decide to start eating meat, ease it in slowly or you could be sick as a dog.

Why the hell would anyone feel the need to compile such a list?!

Does anyone read? The OP wants to lose weight.

OP the rules stay the same for everyone. If you're putting on weight or are large then it's too many calories in versus calories out.

Post up your daily diet and exercise regime.

Yup, and the extra satiety from a little extra protein and fat might be helpful for that goal through reducing overall calories.

If you're a veggie your carbs are prob a bit high. Cut out pasta, bread and the likes and see how you get on. No need to start eating meat if you don't want to(I don't).
