Help! Advice Please! Ready to throw in the towel

I have gained a good bit of weight in the last 2 years and on top of that got pregnant! Had my beautiful daughter 3 months ago and now really feel ready to shift this weight I've been carrying around. So I joined the gym. For the past 4 weeks I have been spending 35 -45mins in the gym, 3/4 days a week and have been eating what I consider to be healthily.
After all that effort I haven't lost a jot, not even one miserable little lb! On the verge of either throwing the towel in or having a consultation for herbalife . . . but was really determined to lose the weight by just being healthier, plus I've heard lots of people say herbalife is reat and they've lost lots of weight but has anyone kept the weight off????
    Please help . . . anyone???

and have been eating what I consider to be healthily.

    There's your problem

Post up your typical diet ?

Post what you are eating. Most people's idea of healthy is heavily influenced by the ads on tv, which push Special K and other crappy cereals.

Keep breastfeeding. A baby is the only device which lets you sit watching television and get the fat sucked off your arse. Literally. During breastfeeding is the one time the female body is willing to give up that hip and thigh fat that's so hard to shift. If you've stopped, consider starting again.

Herbalife is a waste of money and calories. Read the label, the second ingredient is sugar, and the protein in it is not great quality. By all means, substitute a protein shake for a meal every day, but buy some decent protein and put in your own additions, which should not be sugar!

It's virtually impossible to exercise yourself thin, not without spending several hours a day at it. You need to combine with a suitable diet.

    Typical Day:
    Breakfast:
2 Weetabix with semi skimmed milk
    Small glass of orange juice

    Lunch:
    Soup with homemade brown bread
    or
    Chicken/Tuna Salad

    Dinner:
Chicken and Vegetable Stirfry with couscous/brown rice
    or
Meat, 1 Potato and some Vegetables

I also drink approx. 1.5 or 2L of water a day

If I am having a snack it's usually fruit

Maybe my problem is portion size???

Portion size is always a factor. Maybe spend a couple of days weighing your food, so you get to know what your average portion size is. You can open a free account with a website like www.fitday.com and it will do the adding for you. Or you can download HelpDiabetes to your phone, and it will do the same thing.

Just looking at it, your diet appears to be high in carbs, and low in protein and healthy fats. Would you eat a couple of eggs for breakfast instead of cereal? It's got a much better ratio of protein and fats, and is more filling. One study of overweight women found the ones who ate eggs for breakfast ate less for the rest of the day, and lost more weight than the ones who ate the same calories of bagel.

Soup and brown bread is almost pure carbs. The chicken/tuna salad is a much better option.

    Dinner doesn't look bag.

thanks eileen! will give the eggs a try and will also try to encorporate more protein into lunchtime food. thank you all for your input, much appreciated! will keep you posted on progress

What are you doing in the Gym? If its 20-30 mins of cardio then it's not gonna help a whole hell of a lot. You might want to look at introducing resistance training to kick start your matabolism.

Take a look at Damien Maher's articles in the Independant. He has some excellent advice and tips for effective weight loss. It's aimed at everyone.

is there a certain day that his articles appear digger, or is it the once a week health supplement?

OP, i agree with what digger says above about cardio.. you'd be better off doing weights, building lean muscle will burn more fat on an ongoing basis- cardio will only burn calories for the duration of the exercise.

Interval training is meant to be a great way of loosing weight and much quicker too. I cant find the original link I had but this seems to explain it http://www.squidoo.com/tabatatraining

I think it's every Wednesday - think that might be the health supplement day. His articles are on his website (below) but it's a month or two behind. A search on the independent.ie should bring up his latest ones. Don't be put off by his site (looks a bit cheap).

    Hey OP,

Would you consider weight watchers? I know a lot on here dont think its a great option and maybe puts the focus on the wrong things (like not putting any emphasis on reducing carbs or anything) but I have found the support there great and it's really worked for me.

Might be worth considering as a support?

    Good luck!
