So tomorrow, September the tenth, is World Suicide Prevention Day. There's a thread about this over in tGC, but I thought I'd start one here as well, in case regulars here don't venture over there. :)

There is a place in Lucan, Co. Dublin called Pieta House. It is a centre for the prevention of self harm and suicide. I thought that perhaps with tomorrow in mind, it is a pretty worthy cause to donate to. If anyone wanted to help out, you can text 'buddy' to 57000. The text only costs 1 euro and this will go towards the charity.

Anyway, that's just an idea. Really I just started this thread 'cause it's something that's close to my heart and I wanted to raise a little more awareness.

Great idea to post Novella. I'd go if I was home.

My sister is going with a few friends.

The funding issue is really important, as the government have announced funding cuts for suicide prevention services. 527 people died by suicide in Ireland last year, compared to 239 deaths in road accidents, so it's not a small issue and more attention should be given to it and to prevention.

527 people died by suicide in Ireland last year,

Id say a lot more than that even. Its long been suspected that the majority of fatal single collision rta's,of which there are many, are suicides. Also many families will do anything to not have suicide on the death certificate as there's still, understandably, a huge shame attached to a loved one dying of suicide.

I don't really agree with donating money to these types of organisations as I think that lets the government off the hook. They should be using my tax money to fund these services instead of bailing out toxic banks. As far as Im concerned the government should be placing well being over wealth when it comes to formulating policy. As we saw over the Celtic Tiger era and its vast youth suicide rate, wealth really does not bring happiness. But I guess thats all a debate for another forum and thread.

I think there has been a lot of superficial awareness raised on this issue over the last decade or so and it hasn't done much to stem the suicide rate. I really think more emphasis should be placed on the reasons why people feel so depressed. Most of my friends and family members have been on anti-depressants at some stage or another. Many have been on them for the whole of their twenties. While theres a big step between a depressive and a suicidal state of mind, I think they both have in common a sense of hopelessness and failure. I think we have to question a society that makes its young people feel such despair.

Oh yes of course, I should have put officially, I realise there are lots of suicides that don't look like suicides or are covered up. I heard a woman on the radio last year from one of the suicide prevention groups saying that in one year, there were 2 counties whose coroners reported no suicides, which is pretty much impossible.

I think about the shame thing, that really depends on the family. I know when my brother killed himself, we decided that we wouldn't pretend it was something it wasn't. That worked for us, but then when his grandmother wouldn't even come to the funeral, well you see how not everyone's attitude is the same. I really think we need to be open about it, otherwise people on the verge of suicide will never be able to talk to people.

A % of deaths of young men in cars are suicide, they choose crashing the car so that it doesn't look like it and it spares the family the stigma.

Ivy,I cant imagine having to go through what you went through. It takes a lot of courage to do what your family did and by taking that step it ensures suicide is no longer a taboo subject.

You then have coroners ruling the deaths as misadventure even when its clearly suicide!!!!

I hate the stigma :( It bugs me!

    Just read this...

    An Irish Girl in US...

Three girls in court over Phoebe Prince death
    Friday, 24 September 2010 10:30
Three teenage girls have appeared in court in Massachusetts on charges relating to the death of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince earlier this year.

Phoebe, who had moved to the US from Co Clare a short time earlier, took her own life in January after what prosecutors say was a 'relentless campaign of bullying'.

Ashley Longe, Sharon Chanon Velazquez and Flannery Mullins are charged with violation of civil rights resulting in bodily injury.

AdvertisementFlannery Mullins and Sharon Chanon Velazquez are also charged with stalking. All three have pleaded not guilty.

Yesterday, prosecutors asked for a trial date in December but the defence asked for more time to prepare their case.

Two young men who had relationships with Phoebe are also awaiting trial on charges of statutory rape.

... so sorry for this young lady....
