Don't know if anyone else was listening to George Hook this evening but he had a great interview with a doctor about obesity in Ireland.

After listening to this interview I have now learned from a more educated person than myself who is a practioning medical practioner that:

    (a) Muscle weighs more than fat.
    (b) Muscle will turn into fat when you stop using it.

Oh FFS, stop being so pedantic. You know quite well that when people say "weighs more" or "heavier than" they are refering to density not weight (and when they say weight they mean mass ).

If you were on a gameshow and the question was what is heavier; Steel, Copper, Zinc or Lead. Would you point out that they should of said density, or that they should of said which not what. Not you wouldn't, you'd just answer the fcuking thing or else Anne Robinson would tear the sh!t outta you later.

It's not pedantic to oppose the dumbing down of our society.
When a doctor on a national radio station says 'muscle weighs heavier than fat' she should be pulled up on it.
She made a false statement and thus conributed to the public misunderstanding of science.

OP, can I ask what your reason was to ask such a question in the first place?

yeah that was a fairly poor interview IMO, even advocating BMI at this stage as a definitive measure is a bit silly.

Though on the upside every kilo of muscle now weighs more than a kilo of fat, thats pretty cool.

Dear god not the BMI can of worms again :eek::eek::D:D:D

Please let's not have another 15 page thread derailment while we hear (yet again) how effective (or not) BMI is for folks who are active and workout :D:D:D

Mate there ain't no quizshow going to ask a question like that.

As Zamboni said. its dumbing down our society. Who "ordinary Joe" going to listen to you or me or the the Doctor he heard on George Hook.

Wheter its a G.P., a gym instructor or a nutritionist that gives out wrong information the fact is that most people will take their word as gospel and why shouldn't they as they are the people with the qualifications! and While the doctors misinformation isn't going to kill anyone its certainly not going to encourage a girl or a chubby lad wanting to lose bodyfat to start resistance training.

I'd be like "ha in your face, devious bitch. I know thats a trick question and you're just trying to make me look stoopid. They all weight the same"

*Jumps over and Bitchslaps Anne Robinson

    "Pwned, Anne, pwned"
