with all the hype about how huge facebook now is, would just like opinions of those who have shut down their page and why? i closed mine down a month ago and dont miss it. at the start i was always on it but found as time went on, it felt like a school playground online i.e. competition with 'likes', comments made on certain peoples posts or pictures etc. btw i am 30 :)

Nope, cause I find it really handy to remember birthdays, and its a cheap form of communication.

You get out of it what you put into it I feel. :)

Edit: Oh yea,as AlmightyCushion said,How will I do my perving then???!!!

I wish there was a good open-source alternative, but ATM Facebook is the best social network available.

I closed my first facebook page after about a day. Didn't like it. That was a few years ago. Joined it again a few months back and haven't closed my page. Have it on private anyway.

Nope still have it. Have a few cousins living abroad. Wouldn't be that close that i'd be singing them or anything, so with Facebook i can make it look like i care, without having to put any major effort into it. :pac:

And also use it for the perving/stalking. :D

Gave it up for last 6 weeks because it was taking over my life. Did not miss it at all, then I went on it yesterday to post a birthday mesage for my cousin and I ended up spending hours on it. It is an addiction.

I haven't closed down my facebook page. I do hack into other people's pages and close them down sometimes.

    Y'know, for the yucks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭Jev/N

Don't see the need... beats using an IM, Youtube and Flickr separately. Also handy for keeping tracks of upcoming gigs etc. but can be annoying if you're over-spammed

I love my facebook page, how else would i keep in contact with people??

Facebook and Skype are my lifelines now

Signed up for a week and then closed it down. Did'nt find it useful at all. Seems to be full of stalkers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,836 ✭✭✭TanG411

I didn't close mine, because I like playing Zynga poker on it.

I'd spend about two minutes at most checking status updates, my profile. Then it's off to poker for an hour. :D

How would I ever know what is going on in my daughter's life if it wasn't for FB! :D:D

    Deleted as mine was hacked
didn't use it much and hated people who gave me drinks and all the other crap.

OP: As other users have said it really depends what you use it for. Personally, I keep my facebook page quite private, only for people I know, and I have the privacy settings set so that I am the one who decides who I add rather than the other way around. I post up links and stuff that generally interest me online, and it's handy for keeping in touch with people that you've met from numerous different sources. Or friends that may have moved to other countries, or friends you met while being in other countries.

On the other hand, I use my twitter account more openly. Again mainly to share links, or blog posts that I have written.

Facebook and Twitter are only tools. Tools that are used by you as you deem fit. Probably tools to be used with care as well :)

    No.

It's gotten really annoying though, I'd love to get rid of it!
    On my home page now:

"___ and ___ like 'we all have that one friend with really huge boobs."
    "___ likes Shakira"
"___ and 9 other people have changed their profile pictures"
And someone else has posted a link to a Spice Girls' video.

I really want to; it's such a waste of time and I hate all those stupid spammy 'like' things and groups...
BUT, it's really great for keeping in touch with people (especially during the summer break from college) and I like knowing what's going on. So for that I endure it. For now.

The best part of facebook is that you can be pleasant to people that you wouldn't necessarily want to have a face to face conversation with. :o

Nah, I like using facebook, which is a sin now apparently

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

De-activating my Facebook page was the best move I've ever made, now I'm back to having a handful of real friends, not loads of a$$holes annoying me

Why go to the trouble of closing it down? Just don't go on it. Simple.

I've got a page and rarely go on unless really really bored (and/or need a ****)

I'd rather waste my time on Boards than Facebook :)

You **** to pictures of your friends/family on facebook?

You know they have FULL nudity on the internet, right?

    Worth a try:P

I deactivated my account for two weeks and then returned to my old ways. At least when I return to college on Friday I won't have internet in my house which is actually a blessing in my opinion.

Email or skype if needs be.

Some of my mates are always at my to set one up but Ive never had one. dont see the point. From what I can see its full of gobdaws who type in TXT SPK and set up Raul Moat appreciation pages. Why the hell would I want anything I do with something like that.

The day I set up a Fa(e)cebook page is also the day I nail my scrotum to a table and shove a cactus up me hoop!

    That is all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 276 ✭✭Wade in the Sea

I've been in two minds about it. It was great at first as I used it to trace mates of mine that I had lost contact with. Now though there are people on there I know through work that I am friendly with but not so much that I want them connected to me.

I was thinking to delete my profile and set up a new one...sort of an ethnic cleansing of those worthy of my friendship

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,018 ✭✭✭Mike 1972

What I dont get is these stories of employers/prospective employers looking up peoples facebook pages

I mean surely people arent setting up pages under their real full names ????

how else would i keep in contact with my brother in austalia? i have too crap a connection for skype calls, and we just leave each other random movie quotes. (today's one was "I think of a man, and take away reason and accountability")
i have my profile set to private and i only add friends that i'm truly friends with. mostly i just use it to chat with them cos it's easier than texting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,577 ✭✭✭lord lucan

I find it handy for keeping in touch with friends. Don't spend a whole lot of time on it and don't bother with games like farmville or bollocks like that. Going by some of the stuff in my news feed some people seem to spend all day on the bloody thing!

Many of my friends have moved abroad so it's handy enough for keeping in touch. I wouldn't spend much time on it though
