Neighbours angry at mans massive tree

That is one big feckin tree...

    http://www.boingboing.net/2010/09/07/neighbors-angry-abou.html

Neighbors want David Alvand of Plymouth, Devon, England to cut the lovely leyland cypress tree in his yard. In 2003, Alvand almost went to jail over a 12-foot concrete privacy wall that he ultimately was forced to remove. From The Guardian:

(Neighbors) have launched a formal complaint under antisocial behaviour legislation to force him to cut back the vast leyland cypress trees completely filling the front garden.
Planted in 1991, shortly after the 66-year-old moved into the area, the famously fast-growing trees – better known as leylandii and the source of countless previous neighbourly disputes, some turning violent – are now more than 10 metres tall.

As well as completely obscuring the front of Alvand's home, their higher branches overhang his neighbours' roofs, as well as the pavement.

One neighbour said: "That wall took years to sort out. It's been a nightmare. Now the trees are an eyesore – they block out sunlight and make the street look bad."

The neighbour should have reported it years ago. There are strict rules (in the UK anyway) about those Leyland cyprus trees and the height they are allowed to get to.

(Also, those trees are evil, their pollen is the WORST for hayfever! )

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest he heads down to his local branch of Homebase and chuck an ol' chainsaw into the trunk of his car to cut the tree down before the neigbours go barking mad and leave the street.

Yup, I think that about covers the obvious ones.

It does look horrible in fairness

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Bushes should be neatly trimmed & groomed at all times. Even garden bushes.

    Yahoo news/video: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20100907/tuk-argument-grows-over-neighbour-s-tree-dba1618.html

Was in yesterdays Guardian and as some comments suggested to the neighbours, numbers of ways of sneakily killing off the tree were mentioned. LOL

That's a mighty boosh alright. My neighbour's tree is growing a bit and will soon partially block the nice view I have. I happen to have some chemicals to hand that'll destroy it if the fker doesn't keep it trimmed.

I'd be asking myself why the neighbour wants so much privacy / what is he up to?

Between the tree and the wall....

They are the weeds to the tree family.

Had some myself and they would spurt every other years. IN recent years the climate change has given trees an even bigger advantage and we have massive trees all over the country now, they should be cut back of course, felled and made into furniture.

We need trees, but these are not the best and don't support anything apart from a few nesting birds.

€400 is cost me to eventually get rid of them, I* bought a chainsaw for €150 but even that would not keep up with their sudden growth spurts.

OK - so seriously what is the law / legislation in Ireland.
I have a long back garden with an elderly neighbour - and in the past 5 years no one has tended to her garden. As a result we get NO sun until around 2pm daily because the trees and bushes have outgrown themselves. Two are taller than the house.
You can't actually get down the garden from her back door the thistles and brambles have taken over.

And yes, we do trim back what is on our patch and we dispose of it ourselves - she is elderly after all. In saying that she's been "dying" for the past ten years... I can't wait another ten before i get sun in our lovely back garden.

SO - I had thought of offering to cut the trees down myself and leaving them in her garden... is this acceptable do you think?
I'd say it to her of course or to her daughter who visits occasionally!

it's just branches of the neighbours that are sticking it to him. but I think because it is in his garden he can do what he wants along as its not hurting anyone, like his neighbours can just leaf.

and anyone who disagree with my opinion are just bark in mad.

I cant see anything wrong with your offer. You are being a friendly neighbour!
Just be wary, id say you would be suckered into doing gardening till she dies.

Burning down the house and hoping it spreads to the garden - that's the way to go.

Have you tried whacking her over the head with a spade? You can then pour petrol all over the garden and drop a match.

Jaysus if someone sent me that as a photo I would have said it must be a photoshop as no one could have that much bush in front of a house.

    Madness...

What about the roots? Can just about gurantee the roots extend for several housewidths around.
