Looks like it could be a good watch, I'm liking the trailer.

I think all the main people behind it (director & writers) have a history in visual effects so at least we know it will/should look good

Has anyone seen the trailer for this yet?

Basically last year we sent a message billions of miles into space. Some aliens pick up the message and arrive at our planet.
Unlike most films where the aliens are welcomed with open arms, humans appear cautious, taking into account Stephen Hawking's warning that "aliens visiting earth would be like Columbus discovering America. Bad news for the natives".

It looks good. Very mysterious but filled with CGI and no Michael Bay to be seen!

Its out in November. I'm looking forward to this.

It's being directed by the Brothers Strausse - the guys that gave us AVPR.

They will have their cut out proving to me that this is worth watching.

It's gotten some really poor reviews via people on IMDB. That's not even professional reviews. I'll go see it this weekend, but I don't expect much beyond nice special effects.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,399 ✭✭✭Kashkai

"The Brothers Strausse" is a term I hoped I'd never have to read again after they almost destroyed the Alien franchise. AVP2 had the premise of a great movie but they obviously couldn't afford the electricity bills while shooting cause thats why it was so dark in every scene :D.

The trailer for this looks good but then again, how many of us have been fooled by great trailers into going to watch crap movies????? One can only hope that we can go see a good sci fi as its been pretty poor this year at the movies.

Really? I'm not sure I want to go now.

I feel the same but its a sci fi flick and we probably will go to see it in the end, even if we later bitch about wasting 90 minutes of our lives :D

    2nd Trailer:

    Short Clip: (1m:13s)

    Independence Day meets Transformers.

Looks decidedly meh. For a movie that looks like it's priority is visual effects/action first and story/characters second, the vfx were dodgy enough.

After seeing that clip above, I think it's safe to say we don't appear to have the next District 9 on our hands. Still might be a bit of fun to while away 2 hours.

That looks terrible - I mean that looks ScyFy Channel terrible. Seriously, it seems as if someone at Asylum Studios found spare cash down the back of their sofa & thought:

"Hey, lets make that invasion movie we always wanted to. Who's trashy enough and in needing of work that we can hire for a bit more clout? Get me The Brothers Strausse! I'm sure there's some TV flotsam we can rope in too - how about Turk from Scrubs & Batista from Dexter?"

Looks awful and been getting terrible reviews, no wonder there's been very little media hype about this film!

all the right people have been saying this is terrible so it sound right up my street.

im not looking for art here, i want a popcorn muncher.

    cant wait.

    :)

Ha, I just read a review claiming that the film was made for just 10 million dollars; wow, I guess my ScyFy comment was closer to the mark than I thought :D Fair play all the same mind you...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

Heh, when I saw that trailer when it first came out I couldn't get over how cheap it looked. Very Scyfy worthy.

Plus seeing some of the actors and terrible dialogue in it only reinforced it for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭readyletsgo

I have heard the actors where paid in total $500,000 and they spend $15,000,000 on FX, LULZ, FAIL of a film.

saw this today, the acting is exceptionally bad at times its saved from being garbage by the downright astonishing special effects which are really impressive considering the films budget.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,331 ✭✭✭✭bronte

This was painful. Script was terrible and acting cringey at times. :(
Thought it may have been alright, but couldn't get out of the cinema fast enough. Crap.

The trailer was initially visually intriguing at least, but turned into hokey and overdone rubbish by the end. That was over and a minute and a half. Going by the comments here, that is probably all the time worth wasting on Skyline :pac:

Awful AWFUL movie - if you don't pay for it or you're able to laugh at the ridiculousness, it is very funny though...

Thankfully, I got the student rate

    🤪

I kinda liked it. Acting was passable, effects were good, storyline dragged in spots but overall I felt the film was....intriguing. The last ten minutes weren't necessary though and were excessively cheap, predictable and cliche.

Overall, if you're into alien invasion/sci-fi, it's worth a watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,298 ✭✭✭off.the.walls

Only thing i have to say about this movie is EPIC FAIL!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,026 ✭✭✭Amalgam

There's already talk of a sequel.

I like sci-fi where the aliens just don't care about any kind of discussion, you're food to them, or something to be processed.. this looked sinister enough, from the trailers.

I don't think I could tolerate the dialogue though. Might be worth watching with the mute on..

Oh well, there's Sony's film (Battle: Los Angeles) to look forward to.

Sweet Jesus that looks bad. Straight to DVD fodder?

At one end you have Moon, the other you get this.

Update: easily one of the worst films I've ever seen. No character development, threadbare plot and choc full of tedious dialogue that did nothing to advance the story or create interest in what was going on. Its a shame as two of the actors (that I know of) have been in high profile, successful and critically acclaimed TV series.

    I'd give it a 1 out of 1000.

    Avoid

I went to see it on the 1st showing @ UCI.... And its 92mins of my life I will Never get back! And I am a Huge Sci-fi fan!

IT's Awful, painful in places, no plot, at times it was like the actors were told to "improvise"...

One of the scene's where a fighter jet is coming into crash land looks like they used an Airfix model, and the flames that came after it crashed seemed to pass-though the actors in that scene!!

The makers plagiarised the following films:

    Aliens (Space ship scene)

    The Matrix (Hunter - Seekers)

    Independence Day (Air battle)

    Doom/Resident Evil (alien brain monsters)

Starship Troopers (insect like monster design)

Do yourself a favour and watch all of the above movies instead..

Just got back from the cinema, I'd just be happy to get even half those wasted minutes back. It was truly awful in most aspects.
Special effects were good, I'll give it that but the acting & plot were awful. Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for a deep and meaningful saga when watching an alien movie but Independence Day really did strike the right balance, Skyline unfortunately did not.
It was laugh out loud funny in some places but purely due to the absolute nonsense the characters were coming out with.

I'd rather take my chances with real life aliens before I'd sit through that again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭Zamboni

That was the most ridiculously funny movies I've seen in ages.
I was in stitches in the cinema :D
This film was a pisstake, right?

Definitely the worst movie I've ever seen in the cinema. Possibly worst movie of all time ever in the universe. Can't believe it got general release. I'd say its an experiment by movie execs.first time I actually considered asking for my money back

Based on the wee clip posted it looks like one of those films where the bad guys are eagle eyed slick killers capable of knabbing a speeding vehichle with ease, but for some reason can't seem to catch two injured, hobbling 'heroes'.

Heck, I might check this out for the 'so daft its funny' angle. I love you Cineworld card! :pac:

Just back from watching it and really really enjoyed it.
Liked the UCAV fight i have to say, made a change from the standard (and what happened later) F22/F15 air battle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,600 ✭✭✭00112984

I'm just back from it too and enjoyed it. Ideal lazy Sunday viewing with a bucket of popcorn. Ask me in a week about what happened to any of the characters and I won't be able to tell you but it was what it was- yet another alien film. It was like Cloverfield meets War of the Worlds meet District 9 (ok, only very slightly D9).

Every disaster/alien movie cliché was adhered to-
    The whiney girlfriend
The awful decisions by the characters
yup, aliens are attacking from the sky so the very best thing you could do is go driving in your convertible Ferrari with the roof down
The belief that you'll be saved by
    the US Army
A character appearing out of nowhere who seems to know exactly what to do
speaking of whom, did anyone else think the conceirge/building staff guy sounded exactly like Eric Cartman when he was posing as a Latino teacher in a tough, inner city school? "How can I get through to these keeeeeeyds?!"

The CGI was alright. Cagey in parts but I've seen worse. The acting was terrible but it suited some of the great (and by "great" I mean "awful") one liners.
I especially loved the carpark scene
with the man and woman trying to escape in their car. The lady screams "he's alive!!!!" just before her husband is turned into a version of Frankenstein's monster

I found the aliens themselves generally creepy. Especially as the film progresses. I'm with Amalgam as in I like it when the aliens just take over the world because they can. None of that "we come in peace but you killed us before we could save your planet" ****e.

Most of the time, I was cheering (internally) for the aliens and hoping the whiney girlfriend would get zapped
but let's face it, this is an American film and she was pregnant so that wasn't going to happen

I'll give it 6/10 and would recommend it if you're not expecting too much and aren't easily disappointed. I'm glad I read all the lousy reviews before seeing it as I went with exceptionally low expectations.

Would have liked more if there had been a battle at the end between aliens and humans that could control alien bodies, and also if the
hawt girl that turk cheated with didnt't die.

well, even after reading the thread i still went to see this and just dialled back my expectations accordingly (as well as not mentioning to the wife it had gotten slated so she didn't try and back out of going :D).

something most people don't seem to be aware of about the movie is that it isn't a big studio movie, it's an indie film that was put together solely by an fx studio, not some big production company.

the strauss bros. went out and bought all their own camera's (the stunningly good (for the money) red mx series) and lenses etc. and filmed the whole movie in and around their own apartment in L.A. with only a single day of aerial shooting to get some wider shots.

the budget for the movie was $10m all in and the whole thing from the initial concept to cinema release was less than 12 months.

they never intended it to be an oscar winning character piece, it was made from day one to be a low budget brain free sunday popcorn action & sfx fest and i think they did exceptionally well at hitting that mark imho.

yes the acting was cheesy and the script was thin at best, but it was never meant to be anything other than what it is and i think they should be commended for it and all the people here saying it was the worst movie ever REALLY need to see some more sh1tty movies because there is a lot worse movies in existence and plenty of them cost more than $10m to make.

if you're a scifi fan its well worth a watch as long as you take all of the above into account and don't expect a $100m multi-oscar winning epic. grab a large coke and big bag of popcorn on your way in, turn your brain off, suspend your disbelief and just enjoy it for what it is and appreciate the fact that there are guys out there who are brave enough to take the reigns away from the big studio's and make things happen for themselves. :)

I know I shouldn't go see this, but I also know that I will be going to see this as its sci-fi and I have to watch sci-fi even if it is the "Brothers - we almost killed off the Alien franchise for ever - Strausse" who are behind this. Damn this sci-fi addiction of mine :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

you know every now and again a film gets universally panned for reasons that are quite honestly beyond me.

skyline is one of those films.

im just back from it now and i thought it was fantastic !

yes its a remorseless ripp off off a half a dozen or so films . but you know what ? that doesnt matter when its done well

    and this is.

its war of the worlds. in fact its a much much better war of the worlds than the remake speilberg foisted upon us a few years back in that it actually SHOWs us something without forcing a sentimental family story down our throats. its got the action of independance day without the american jingoism and patronisation , and the style of cloverfield with more visuals.

best of all its that rare beast
an alien invasion film, which if it doesnt get a sequel, has humanity losing

    i mean FFS.

    Its got
aliens sucking peoples brains out of their heads to use as wetware in their weaponry, essentially meaning all the people taken at the begining are fighting us for them as their shock troops. you SEE this on screen.

    ok its not art.

ill be the first person the say that, but to say this is the WORST film of the year clearly shows someone that hasnt watched resident evil after life. the acting is no worse than any other Sci Fi films ive seen recently
with again a cast of virtual nobodies which allows practially ALL of em to be killed by the end of this film. in fact the guy MOST recognaisable in this gets offed pretty much first - something that could never happen in a tom cruise film
and if the special effects really HAVE been done for less than 10 million someone seriously dererves an award as theyre top notch.

ok the ending may piss some people off, and it certainly came out of the blue to me but
on reflection this gives us what i said earlier, a devestated earth where people lose. so it stops being the usual "america **** yeah" and starts being a very good survival film

if its not everyones cup of tea thats fair enough, but no way is this the travesty its been made out to be. i'd certainly have no problem going to see it again and i hope it does good enough to get a sequel as the way it ends is intrigueing to say the least.

best film ive seen in ages.
