So what's it like? What facilities/machines does it have? Does it have a pool? And what's the changing rooms/showers like? :P

The gym in itself is well equipped and on the North Campus. However the pool is on the South campus.

It's good. A load of different weights machines, a dozen treadmills or so, few rowing machines, bikes, cross trainers, a whole load of other weight training stuff.

Changing rooms are fine. Lockers cost €10 (this is for a wrist band); you're not meant to leave bags in the changing rooms/gym itself.

If you go please remember to wipe down any machines you use and don't hog machines / sit on them while doing nothing, that drives me mad.

Not the best gym but its free so cant have any real complaints

The swimming pool is tiny, can remember doing kayak training there and to say it was a tight squeeze was an understatement.

So is the tenner a deposit or do you just keep the locker?

I think you just keep it.

The gym is grand, can get busy at certain times but anytime I've been it's never been too packed out.

You can easily go for a swim after the gym, it's only about a 5 min walk away (or a 2 min jog).

The tenner is used to purchase a wristband, with which you can use one of the bank of lockers for free. As far as I recall, you can leave stuff in there for up to 2 hours, after which the locker locks shut until about 10pm, when they all open automatically, to prevent people leaving stuff in there all day and using it as a locker for college stuff, as it were.

Ok so I'm thinking a health kick to start the year is in order.. way too lazy over the last summer!

Would anyone be able to give me like the best times in the day to try the gym, where it wouldn't be too busy (i.e. no much wait for machines) or does it get busy?

    :)

We all start the year like that, good luck stickin' to your health plan. :p

Apparently the gym is busiest around lunchtime (1-3pm) but I've never seen it rammed. I usually went around 7pm and it was grand.

Early when it opens in the morning.

The gym will be full of people with the same mind set as you initially, then people will drop off.

Just wondering if there are people in the gym who don't mind giving a new person a hand? I have never been bothered with paying for a gym that I may only use twice a year, but with it being free, I might try it out.

Problem is I honestly wouldn't know where to start. Would the gym staff help you out with that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,362 ✭✭✭K4t

Ya I'm sure they would. I just asked a lad beside me for a few pointers and he was very helpful. Just don't interrupt someone if they're going hard at a machine/weights. Wait until they're finished or standing around. Best thing would be to ask a friend who goes to the gym to go with you and show ya around.:)

I don't think i'v heard of any other college with free gym, pool and astro-turf facilities. Sounds good!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

Well nothing is maintained properly so don't have too high hopes. The astro is in shocking condition.

Are they free if not I'll go berserk I'm paying good money to go here.

    Lol

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,362 ✭✭✭K4t

Yeah they're all free! You should book the astro in advance though as the college teams train on it and it's popular with other students too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,540 ✭✭✭freeze4real

do i need to have atleast 6 - 18 guys to book it.

Haha, em nope. Sure the best number for a half pitch is 7 a side. There is a few times were the pitch gets doubled booked so make sure you get on the pitch first.

can ya use the gym straight away or do we have to wait till we get college cards or whatever

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

Technically you have to wait until you have a student card. Technically ;)

Does everybody playing on the astro have to be a student of Maynooth? Or just the one booking it?

Just the one booking it. They literally never check who is playing on it or who is using the gym.

The general sporting facilities here are like the rest of the college I think, satisfactory but not excellent, but they are free so I'm ok with them. Although I probably wouldn't mind paying a standard subscription once a year for some improvements. I know this probably isn't an option for alot of students though.

Gym is ok, can get pretty crowded in the evenings but thats to be expected for its size. I would like to see some of the equipment upgraded though. I dont use the weights room down stairs so can't comment on that.

The pool isn't the greatest one you'll ever find and the opening hours can be annoying, but when its not packed its ok.

The astro is great I think, its free and is just a matter of trying to book it, or sneak onto it if there is no one using it.

I would love a running track but I realize we are a relatively small uni and the actually demand to build one would probably be relatively small. Plenty of fields to run around though.

stuck my head in today, it had signs up saying "no bags in the gym or hallways" or whtever, yet there bags all over the place. whats up with that?

also,, do you need to pay for a locker or can you just throw your stuff in them if your not too fussy?

    Welcome to Maynooth.

RE: Lockers, i'm pretty sure they're locked and you need to pay to get one open. Generally I leave my bag on top of the lockers in the Arts block.

They'll start to get a bit more strict once lectures actually start back i'd say.

Also regarding paying, you pay a once off fee to get a magnetic wrist band thing that allows you to use any of the lockers in the viewing area outside the gym. I dont think they are expensive. Alternatively you can just put your stuff in them and leave them unlocked. Unless its being used by someone and locked all the other lockers are not actually locked. Might be a bit risky but their the options.

As token56 said. The charge itself is a once off €10 to cover the cost of the wristband. After that you need to reactivate the band every year, but this is free and just a matter of calling into reception. You can use these lockers for 2 hours at a time. After that they lock FOREVER*.

*well until 10 that night, when they all open

There are multiple changing rooms, you should check them out.

Yeah, the ones beside the coke machine etc are crap.

Follow the corridor around the sports hall, and there are better rooms, with better showers....not sure about sockets though!

Yeah had a nosey around most of the changing rooms - no sockets. I spoke with a v nice girl at fitness reception & she confirmed there wasn't any. However, she mentioned that there was some sockets in the hallways but has yet to see anyone drying hair etc. there. She said there's always the hand dryer

As far as I know you can get personal training in the gym for like 40 squids a session, which is absolutely ridiculous. Not sure if you get a free assessment or not...

But I've been known to wander into the gym from time to time and could give you or any other noobies a hand with workouts, dieting, whatever.

Just send me a message if you're interested and we'll sort out a time

Thanks man. Actually got to the gym last Tuesday with one of the lads whose a regular gym goer and he helped me out and got me doing running and a small bit of weights (couldn't lift my arms on Thursday, but it was in a good way).

Gonna kill 2 hours on a Tuesday and Wednesday. If you see a struggling person looking out of place on a machine, and a muscley lad giving him american-tv-show like encouragement, I'm the one on the machine:p
