Home Gym Dilemma

I'm thinking of purchasing either an exercise bike or a rower for a small home gym. Problem is im completely lost as to what to get. I enjoy rowing, but I dont know what quality rower a few hundred quid will get you. I could get a concept 2, but they cost 1700 odd euro, which is very steep for something that will get a few hours use a week, but I know its a top notch rower having used it at the gym before for years. A bike might a safer bet though.

The biggest problem is that I dont have a notion which home brands are any good, the ones I have seen mentioned are as follows, v-fit, reebok, marcy,pro-fit,york, nordictrack and pro form.

So if anybody has experience with any those brands (or any others !) I'd love to hear it.

(And no thanks, I dont want to join a real gym or get a proper bike for various reasons)

Can I ask where you got your price for the CII?

If you look at the Concept UK site they are currently offering a refurbished Model C with a PM3 for £740 (€900) + shipping which would be a lot less than €1,700.

Also there is a forum on that site with a buy and sell section, where if you had means to travel to NI/UK your could pick up a CII for considerably less than €1,700.

Honestly if I were looking for a rower for home I would only consider a CII as I honestly don't think that the cheaper models available are up to much. Another pont is that the CII rowers pretty much hold their resale value, so should you decide in the future you want rid, you would have no trouble shifting it and getting most if not all your money back.

Another option for 'cardio' work would be doing a crossfit style metcon at home with the weights you have and bodyweight exercises.

Both ocallaghan leisure and mahers sports in cork sell it for this price. I dont think my budget will stretch to either the refurb or new machines at the moment. My feeling is that maybe a € 200-300 exercise bike at argos might be the best value for money, the other outfits seem to have a 50-100% mark-up on the internet price of alot of machines.

It would be poor enough quality at that price, I would stick with Colms advice. A few hundred would get you kitted out with some weights and a chinup bar, if your goal is to just stay reasonably fit & not have a beer belly you do not need much.

I would sooner spend my €1,700 on a nice TV that I know will definitely get good use!;)
