Do you believe that some people are ugly?

I was having a conversation with a friends on Saturday there, and the subject of ugliness came up. One of my friends maintained that there are no ugly people, and that everybody is beautiful in one way or another. At first it was assumed that she meant inner beauty, but she said no: all people are physically beautiful in one way or another. She didn't go so far as to say that people are all equally beautiful, admitting that some are more beautiful, others less so.

I countered with the following anecdote:

One morning after an end of exams party I was walking around like a zombie, on the verge of throwing up every couple of seconds. My friend, who was in a similar condition, suggested we get a bag of chips to try and absorb some of the acidic juices rolling around inside us. I was leaning against the window fighting off waves of nausea as my friend ordered. Eventually we got the chips, I opened the bag and started eating, which made me feel worse. We crawled out of the greasy chipper into the streets, whereupon we were greeted with a high pitched inner city female's accent. I turned around and before me was a woman who must have weight 22 stone, he face was covered with freckles and her hair was stretched back in a pony tail to such an extent that threatened to peel the scalp from her skull. He face had the strangest shape, like a distended loaf of bread covered with scabs and slick with oil. Her light yellow teeshirt stuck to every contour of her body, disappearing into the deep chasms between her love handles and her bingo wings. The tensile strength of her skin was tested to its maximum at the lower reaches of her belly, which, of course, stuck out from under her shirt, over her jeans, which appeared to be painted on. He whole being shimmered as she walked towards us, and I looked to my friend, before finally losing the battle, and throwing up into the bag of chips I had just bought.

What do you think, are there ugly people?

No I don't think you can say there are objectively ugly people. The aesthetic value of somebody can only really be assessed on a subjective level.

Of course that's not to say that there are no people who almost everybody would believe to be ugly.

Is the issue that everybody out there would be found attractive to someone? That although someone may be the ugliest, dirtiest skankwhore you've ever laid eyes on, there is at least one person on the planet who thinks she's lovely looking?

If so then you're asking me to take in the perception of every living person in the world. I can't do that. I can answer questions on aesthetics only from my viewpoint. If, to me, a person is ugly does it matter that someone else may not think so? No. Just like it doesn't matter that someone they find unattractive might be visually pleasing to me. So there certainly are ugly people. They just might not always be the same people to everyone.

Or is the question; do even ugly people have at least one beautiful feature? In this case, still no. I can honestly say I have never, ever, ever seen anyone and thought "Wow, what a beautiful nose!" or "That ugly bloke has gorgeous eyebrows."

If someone is so visually displeasing, that they can tip you over the edge in such a way as to induce vomitus, then she must be ugly. cant remember the last time I puked watching kelly brook!!

I'd go further and say that all babies are ugly. Their bodies are all out of proportion and have faces like deflated balloons. Don't get me wrong, the majority grow up to be fairly decent looking people, but not at the work in progress stage. Just my opinion.

I think ladies tend to be a lot more forgiving, and hence the assertion, which is wholly inaccurate. There are plenty of ugly people. Naomi Campbell springs instantly to mind. While not ascetically ugly, she is about the ugliest person I can think of.

Everyone sees people differently. Lots find Brad pitt appealing but I dont see it. Some days I feel very ugly looking and others Im okay.

There are, but in a subjective, not an objective sense. If someone's ugly, it's my problem, not theirs - I think they are ugly because of my conditioning, my background, my prejudices, my biology etc. They are only ugly in my head, not in an objective universal sense.

Now it may be that many people might agree with me that they're ugly, but that still doesn't fundamentally make it 'true'.

Well a person could exist that finds Mary Harney to be attractive. Whether that person actually exists is a different matter. The point is that how ugly or good looking somebody is not something you can measure objectively as the notions are inherently subjective. You can define somebody as ugly based on what are defined as (un)attractive traits. The problem comes from the fact that these traits are by no means universal and set in stone, instead left to the decision of each individual.

You might be able to get away with saying somebody is simply 'ugly' if every living person would make that assessment but given the amount of people that actually exist I doubt that's even true.

My logic might actually be wrong, I haven't slept at all.
