Yeah just noticed that by chance too...€30 if you don't pick it up on your set day or Friday? They'll make a bomb if they stick to that!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

They want people to take their own pictures and email them to the relevant address too afaik, and another 30e fine if that isn't done properly too. I hate the way the college has gone so money grabbing lately, its like a switch went on the collective heads of people who wanted to **** over students. That card collection schedule is retarded.

well they have to pay for getting rid of all the green areas to replace them with buildings, don't they?

Is it not cheaper to say you "lost" the original and pay the €13 fee for a replacement. . . . .

Can't imagine they'll check you ever picked it up in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭lumpwood

Its €30 for replacement cards now aswell. Just picked mine up there..didn't need to email them a photo or anything, they already had one on file for me.

If anyones picking theres up today they seem to have moved the pickup area from the concourse to the orbsen building too.

Mine was due to be collected today, afaik none of my class knew about it as we don't start til next Monday so we're all still at home. Why would they not email us about it? Theres gunna be alot more people on Friday than they're expecting I'd say...

A fantastic start to your college life anyway!:p
It's a bit ridiculous. Supposedly I'm not an EU citizen and am paying 3 times the fees...and they won't let me change the answers to some of their stupid questions...and their reghelp desk is being overrun with calls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,239 ✭✭✭KittyeeTrix

    Thanks for that info Challengemaster!!!

    Just saved me 30e:)

Do I need to be registered before I can pick up the card???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭lumpwood

Yeah, they have a sheet saying whether you're registered or not when you're picking up the card. Have to be registered to get it.

Ah, I'm going into second year, I know the runnings of the place by now :P

Did you register for first year and upload a photo in the photo section? If not, you have to email them a photo for your ID card.

You're better off trying to deal with someone in person. There are some dicks on the desks and there are some sound people. I'm not going to name names though cause that could cause problems...

I dunno it was something that was mentioned in my PAC application. I'm already a student and they have my picture so I didn't bother with it, but I imagine it must apply to first years and new postgrads. It sounds really ****ing dumb.

how are u supposed 2 upload a photo if i dont hav the proper digital camera, can u just go in with 2 passport photos?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

    http://www.nuigalway.ie/registration/Students/2010/1st_year_undergrad.html

It suggests emailing a passport photo, so presumably they expect you to scan it? You could try going to the registration and saying you had no means of emailing them the thing and just not budge on it, they will probably accept the pictures from you they just like being awkward for the sake of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,109 ✭✭✭QueenOfLeon

You have to scan if as far as I can see. Last year they took pictures there, or you could bring in the passport photo, but it caused queues for hours. If you don't have a scanner just go into an internet cafe, they usually have a scanner you can use.

There's scanners in a few of the PC suites. Don't know if first years can log in or not yet though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

I dont think bringing in a photo would work - aren't the pictures printed onto the cards?

yeah, but last year, you could bring in a passport photo, they'd scan it, and print it onto the card. i didn't bring or upload one so i was waiting aaaaagges to get it taken by webcam by the staff :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,056 ✭✭✭WallyGUFC

I uploaded a passport pic when I was registering and it showed up like but I didn't email them to it. Is that okay?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Ah, well thats balls. I uploaded one, but apparently it didnt save o.O

Not even sure I have any to dig out and scan...

Hope this doesn't come across as too insane but if anyone needs a picture to be scanned, I have mine in Galway and won't mind emailing it on to anyone if it saves them some trouble.

It says we need our p.p.s no, any idea on what you can use for that?

You can leave that blank, it's not mandatory.

I just collected mine, they don't have any dates on them, except for birthdates. They don't even have numbers in the course codes. Maybe this is just on the postgrad ones?

Anyway, it's going to cause havoc. I'm going to have a student discount for the rest of my life!

For years other than 1st year, you don't actually have to be registered, if you're "pre-registered" (which I think everyone is automatically) then your card will be there.

I don't see why it's now €30 for a replacement, they've changed the colour of the cards from white to green but there's nothing amazing about them...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭lumpwood

Its more likely that places will stop accepting them than give a lifelong student discount tbh. Not the best move getting rid of the issue date!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,924 ✭✭✭✭RolandIRL

i think it has to do for the length of your course, doesn't it? someone mentioned that to me today, so we mustn't get a new one next year. am i right on that?

Yup you're right and also the pictures are screwed up this year as they are very long and very thin so the person in the picture is squished, dunno what was wrong with the old ones, they can build buildings all over the place but then skimp on the student ID by issuing one for you're entire cousre and increasing the replacement fee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Fairly sure most places already do course long ID's, I know DCU does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭whadabouchasir

I heard somewhere that everyone except first years can collect their id cards between 9 and 12 on Friday in the concourse.

did they not change the collection point to the Orbsen building? i had to go there today to collect my ID.
just to add, you can collect it on friday without being charged the €30 fine. any time after that, you will have to pay.

This, they took the photo from the old student card and increased the height without adjusting the width. I look like a fookin horse on mine.

And yeah, as has been mentioned they changed the collection point to the Orbsen building(without telling anyone apparently, I only found out cuz my flatmate happened to be walking by and saw them inside.)

It could be in the Orbsen,I just think it's crazy how they didn't bother to tell us,obviously they just want to collect a sh*tload of fines.

I'm a first year, so that's me? :pac:

The 8th and 9th for returning students I think?

    1st Year Undergrad Students

Please check out Registration Dates or the registration handbook for dates of when you can collect your card.

Your Student ID Card can be collected on the 1st Floor, Aras Ui Chathail (See Campus map http://www.nuigalway.ie/campus-map/).

You just need to bring along your birth cert or passport and your PPS number as we have to have a look at these before we can issue you with Student ID Card.

didn't realise you were a first year. check your handbook for the dates to collect your id :)

God they are awful at contacting students. firstly there was no notice about ID collection, then on the website it told me to go to moyola (nursing), where there was nobody there. Then they changed it to the orbsen building so i went there who sent me to aras ui cathail, and they told me nursing wasnt out until next week!
