Weightlifting and ashtanga rest days

As weightlifting breaks down your muscles, you obviously need rest days to give them a chance to repair. But I notice the same soreness and muscle growth from ashtanga yoga (the very vigorous yoga) as I do from weightlifting. So should I avoid doing ashtanga on my days off from weights, will it stop my muscles from having a chance to repair themselves?

Just like to ask a few questions about rest also.

How long should we rest after a hard workout ? a day ? 2 days?

Plus if i work my chest today and work my shoulders the next day is that ok ?

Sorry for posting on your topic. but is kind of the same.. :P

Yeah, that's fine and one of the reasons why people progress to a two day split after doing full body for a while. Allows you to train on consectutive days.

As for how long, some people leavit it 48 hours. Other more. I run a 3 day split at the moment.
    Day 1: Chest/Back
    Day 2: Legs/Shoulders
    Day:3: Cardio/Metcons/HIIT

I've often gone from day 3 straight back into day 1 again and done 6 days straight.

    Hey Op,

I try to just work through the sun salutations when I can on non lifting days. As you'll know with Ashtanga its all about warming up the body form the inside. Its a lot more to do with stretching the body out. Although as you say, it can be one hell of a work out if you doing an hour session. And you can also build great muscle from it.

On the days when i can get time to do the Yoga, I definitely feel it helps me with recovery. I don't think I could do a full session though!
