mixed the reisin with the hardener 1.5mls to 100mls of reisin that went good done the fibreglass that went good,went rock hard that went good,sanded it down that went good,now all i had to do is put on the gelcoat this is the problem,so i brushed on the gelcoat very thick 3 days later it still ain't dry,the gelcoat part went wrong somewhere along the line but dunno,the gelcoat i have was mixed with white when i bought it???

help please!! :eek:

Hi there, Gelcoat is only used when building in a mould, It's not used for applying over fiberglass to get a good finish. Are you sure it was mixed with the right amount of hardener it may not be the same mix as fiberglass. You will also need to mix some liquid wax in to gelcoat as it does not cure in the presence of oxygen. The wax migrates to the surface and seals the gelcoat from the air ensuring full cure.

sorry, yes it is. I only did it this morning after repairing a hole in an opy with glass, the gel it up after. You need hardener in it or else it'll stay wet. You should also tape any type of plastic (say part of a zip lock bag) over it and gently rub the air out of it. Clear plastic from the likes of a zip lock bag is best, so you can see what your at.

Going by his other post as far as I can tell he was talking about sealing the hull not patching a hole. you will have a hard job painting gelcoat on to the hull of a boat so I said to use epoxy mixed with graphite power it's waterproof and very strong.Gelcoat is fine for patching holes and using plastic like you say works like a female mould to give a smooth finish but you will need a big zip bag to cover a boat.:)

thanks to a bit of advice from fergal,everything is grand now,so just gonna update the situation...

yes it was for a hole,cut it out got the water cracks out,put on the fibre glass,went rock hard,then put on gelcoat without the hardner,talked to fergal he told me to take the gelcoat of which i did,sanded it down and just painted of it with marine paint 2 coats(i done the hull just out of precaution with gelcoat but took that of also) and painted the whole boat with marine paint..

I will not be leaving this boat in the water after use,so i presume it will be safe..
