plus if anyone has a problem with their subject maybe someone here will be able to give a hand :D

i'm thinking of doing psychology, archaeology but stumped on the last two. thinking of maybe history philosophy or geography :p

how about the rest of you?

Second that, when do we actually have to choose our subjects by?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭musical.x

we have like 2 weeks to try out the subjects i think. then you have to pick the four that you would like to do. they have some information on the website for each subject.might be worth a glance.

oh great thanks. what was history like for first year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,031 ✭✭✭Lockstep

History was brilliant, by far my favourite subject.

First semester you do War and Society in the Age of Revolutions; the United Irishmen 1798 Rebellion with Niall Ó Ciosáin and Europe 1789-1815 (French Revolution and Napoleon) with Caitríona Clear.
You do War and Society in the Age of Great War in the Second semester. In normal English that's World War I (Géaroid Barry) and the 1916 Rising with Mary Harris.

All of these are excellent lecturers so you'll have no problems if you do the work. If you decide to keep history on after first year you can specialize in things like Northern Ireland, Military History, Women's History, American Civil War and so on.

    Is Archaeology a long course?

I'm doing English, Geography, Celtic Civilisation - thought it would be interesting. I have also chosen French but I'm not sure because I got a C2 in the LC and I'm not sure if that's a good enough grade to carry on with french at college. I think Archaeology would be really interesting to do. :)

When you register with NUIG you have to must choose 4 subjects that you think you would like to do. You can attend the introductory lectures starting on the 13th and then change your subjects online if you want. Formal lectures begin on the 21st. I'm not sure exactly when you have to have the finalised but I think it's the 30th. I'm not certain about that date but it's around then anyway.

Here's a link to the introductory lectures timetable for anyone who wants it.

I was thinking of doing Sociological and Political Science, German, English and Philosophy. But I'm actually unsure about all of them, except Philosophy. Would love Classics as well.. or Spanish, Celtic Civilisation, maybe even Mathematical Studies (though.. that might be a bit too brave)
Does anybody else not come from Ireland?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 894 ✭✭✭filmbuffboy

Im probably gonna do English, Classics, Philosophy and HIstory.

A few ppl that have already been through NUIG have told me that Ive chosen 4 subjects that are a tough mix. All reading and writing heavy.

THis mabye true but surely any subject combo would be hard. Like there are no easy subjects at University surely? LOL

    anyone any opinions on this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

It depends if you are the type of person to avoid work then it will be intense and hard. If not then there's no problem. I didn't do my BA at NUIG but I assume first year is the same pretty much everywhere in that its fairly easy (too easy really, unless you are new to a subject).

Nah, i defo wouldnt avoid any of the work. Im 27, so Ive done the whole party 24/7 thing already. Work first, play later lol.
Seriously though, any 4 subs will b challenging? wont they?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

Yes pretty much but besides that you only have the 4 for a year so its only temporary, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've decided on Legal,History,English and Classics.

    Here's my synopsis of what I did in first year;

Legal Science; this can be quite weighty. Most of the year (1st and 2nd Semester) is contract law. Fairly self explanatory. You'll get sick of hearing about the Carbolic Smokeball though.
You also do Irish Legal Systems (basically how Irish law is laid out; district courts, High Court etc) although this is a smaller aspect and is tested by a single assignment rather than the exams for Contract Law.
It can be quite tricky as people don't realise how to approach a question. Only a limited number are allowed onto 2nd year but if you do the work you'll be fine. Lots of case law and reading involved but it's common law so if you're a good arguer then it'll stand to you. Even if you drop it after 1st year, the knowledge of contract law is useful in general life. If you continue on, you will do things like Tort Law and Constitutional law in 2nd year (with a range of optional modules like Law of the Sea and Human Rights Law). In 3rd year you do Company Law, Criminal Law and EU Law. If you want to become a lawyer then this is a great course as at the end of your BA, you can enter onto the LLB course (the LLB is a postgrad which grants a full law degree. It normally takes 3 or 4 years but if you do legal science, you'll have done so much undergrad law that you'll be awarded the LLB after one year) The LLB lets you go into King's Inn or sit the FE1s.

History; I already explained this above. Great subject. My personal favourite. Excellent range of modules and I found the analytical skills to transfer extremely well into Legal Science.

Sociology and Political Studies; Nice mix here. Often seen as the soft option as so much of it is common sense. Some amazing lecturers (especially Brendan Flynn, the man is a campus legend) and you'll do things like deviance and feminism (in sociology) and Irish Politics (how Irish politics works; the Oireachtas, the President, elections, the Single Transferrable Vote) and Political Ideologies (The 'macro-ideologies; Liberalism, Socialism, Conservatism as well as the advent of new ones like green politics) I recommend this one as it's a great general course which explains a lot about real life, although often people veer towards sociology or politics and dislike the other.

Archaeology; this was my 4th subject. You study things like the Stone Age, Celts, Vikings, Normans, castles etc. Different people appreciate different aspects (I found the Stone Age to be incredibly dull but the sections on castles and Normans to be incredibly interesting). The university archaeology society is a good place to look here as they organise a lot of field trips and speakers who'll really help out your understanding.

Hard to say, I found legal science to be a doddle whereas others found it an abolute nightmare, likewise, I'd have probably found English to be harsh whereas my friend got a first in it.
I'd advise against taking subjects just for their easiness, I did archaeolgy as I thought it'd be a soft option. I found it interesting enough and I got a 1st in ut but I'm now wishing I'd done something else. A first year subject is a great introduction to a subject so you can really broaden your knowledge without having to keep on a subject in later years.

This is quoted underneath the timetable
    Notes
The Web Resources Introductory Lecture introduces the web-based resources available to you as a student. It includes: navigating
the University website, using the PC Suites, Blackboard, the library on-line, and other web-based resources you will need at
University. These lectures will be useful for every student and you should aim to attend one during the first week

*Students who wish to study Welsh should attend the Celtic Civilisation talk for information

You will register your subject choice online by October 8th and you need to have informed yourself
fully, and attended the subjects you choose before then. You must have met with your Advisor and
submitted the Advisor form to them before then (available at
    www.nuigalway.ie/faculties_departments/arts/firstyearba.html).
Introductory material will be provided in each subject to help you choose.
    • At special Introductory Lectures (Schedule above)
Each subject will cover introductory material, repeated in each of the time-slots allocated, so
you can attend the introductory lecture for all subjects.

EDIT: The second image is larger so be sure not to confuse the columns :) there's nothing on a friday after 2pm :)
