..or specifically, non-alcoholic beer. There I was getting my shopping and thought 'ooh I fancy a beer...'. Seems a 27yr old cannot buy non-alcoholic beer without being asked for ID. And when he produces a Driving Licence it's 'not acceptable'. I can go to the UK on a driving licence and use it as ID to buy booze, why not here? And I certainly don't look 17. I took at least some pleasure in leaving my shopping for her to clear away while I scooted off to Aldi and got them cheaper. What the hell is wrong with this country?

Bloody Tescos, wouldnt sell me a box of matches last week without ID

Yeah that's annoying. Especially since it's non-alcoholic. The worst though is shops that don't accept a passport.

BTW non-alcoholic beer is disgusting. Well the stuff I tried.

You're still at an age when you're insulted by being asked for ID.

Give it another couple of years and you'll be on here boasting about it :D

I'm 18 but have been stopped because driving licenses aren't accepted - what's that about - surely a driving license is a valid form of identification

I was stopped in Dunnes I think it was but still

I know it sounds rediculous but I think shops need to treat NA alcoholic beverages as alcoholic due to containing .001% alcohol or whatever the f**k it is, No excuse if you look your age but wouldnt suprise me if NA beer is treated like alcoholic beer, and thus it shows up on their system as so, I'd love to know if its possible to get drunk off the .001% alcohol NA drinks have actually :D

Ah sure it's worse in America.
I was there 2 years ago, in a computer game store and asked to produce ID to buy a computer game (18 cert). I was 36 at the time.

I asked if they thought I had progeria, which amused this guy with his kid standing beside me in the queue.

True :) Phonypony, I was stopped two years ago (aged 33) on my way into a pub by a bouncer, sorry, doorman, doorperson who wanted to see my ID. Only thing was I didn't actually realise he was stopping me so I walked in straight past him :D It was only seconds later I realised he meant me and I looked back, he's looking in the door at me with a look on his face that says 'What am I, invisible?' and I just shrugged and mouthed 'sorry' to him. Truth be told, it was flattering :D

Sure in England a 30 year old woman was asked for ID when she went to buy cheese.

I'll be 27 on Tuesday and still get asked for ID a lot of the time. The look of embarrassment in the cashiers/bouncers faces when they realise how badly wrong they were in their assumption, is heartwarming

"Hannah Craig, 30, was asked for ID before being allowed to purchase Morrisons £1 Cheddar and Whisky Trickle."
"But a Morrisons spokesman insisted the retailer took its responsibility seriously when it came to selling alcohol."
-seriously? How is that taking it seriously? Turning it into a joke :D

Bizarre. I now of two places where an Irish passport is not accepted as proof of ID: Ireland, and the Irish embassy in Belin.

Dunnes are just as bad. I'm nearly 31,and they wouldn't let me buy a bottle of wine without ID a while back. Told them the ID was in the car and i'd be back in a minute, went to the off licence instead where i got it no bother.

They probably thought you were underage since you didn't come back

I do this just so I can get all excited when I hear them call the manager over the intercom. Makes you feel a bit special doesnt it?

I'm usually a bit thick at that stage. Nothing more infuriating than queuing up for ages and then not be sold the beer because you have an old pic in your passport.

I posted this recently enough in another thread.

Got asked for ID in Dunnes for LUCOZADE!!
Was told it was new policy in Dunnes to ask for ID for Lucozade and Red Bull

Also got refused in Aldis when tryin to use my passport even though i hadnt even been 18 for a week, told her there was no way it would have been possibe for me to have an age card that soon... eventually got the manager who gave it to me as " a one off"... havent been back since.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,604 ✭✭✭xOxSinéadxOx

^ why are they refusing passports now? well it has never happened to me but you'd think a passport would be the hardest thing to forge, and you'd get in a lot of trouble for that

What age do you have to be to buy matches??!?!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,659 ✭✭✭Devil08

Age restrictions are stupid! sure up until recently you coulnt watch some films until you were 18! come on now! And thats including porn! you have to be 17 to have sex but 18 to watch it! here now! explain that one!

Prime Time made them look like a dial-a-drink service for the underage last week, they probably have their panties in a bunch as a result of that.

16, IIRC. And from working in Tesco (not any more), it depends on the store whether they accept a passport or not. I know I got it accepted in the store I worked in when I pointed out the discriminatory nature of asking non-nationals for an Irish specific age card. They loved me there. :p

You need a f*cking passport to buy matches?!?!

Holy crap - talk about nanny state-ism in the extreme.

AFAIK they have to accept a driving license or passport as they're state-approved forms of ID...
