This game had better be good after all of this bollox.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,696 ✭✭✭Jonny7

Its firmly embedded in nerd lore now and has an unshakeable cult status

    which means..

the game could be utter tripe and still sell... the developers might just be starting to cop onto this fact now..

Still boggles my mind why they haven't made a Chuck Norris film, you could make it on a budget of 8 quid and billions of nerds would go see it regardless.

I'd say the majority of gamers that were waiting for this all those years ago have grown up, got married, have children and have no time for playing games anymore.

    I know I have.

The Duke himself is the only one that hasn't aged.

Out of all video game characters to reappear in sequels, Duke has aged the worst imho.

Important Gameplay Mechanic #1: Drawing on Whiteboard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

From what I gathered from the gameplay it seems to be pretty much the same game of the footage we that was realeased months ago.

The Stadium and Canyon levels are there along with the guns. All I could make out was that the graphics had been tuned up since this video:

I watched an interesting round-table discussion on the subject. They talked about how the Duke Nukem universe will translate to the present era of gaming and if it's now antiquated.

best thing going for it is that Gearbox are involved.

While their own work has been love it or hate it (brothers in arms, borderlands have as many people that love them as they hate them.)

They have had their fingers in other franchises that have been very well recieved.

Opposing fronts is one of the best add on packs of all time and valve still got bugged with people asking if shepherd will show up in half life 2 ever.

They also did the pc version of Halo which was a damn fine version and a great multiplayer game in its own right.

Gearbox have a great track record of finishing big projects on time so hopefully there will be no development hell.

It'll definitely be out before 2020...

Aye. Seen some people playing it on consoles here: http://pax.gamespot.com/video/6275247/

As for the youtube video someone posted above, looks like the video from the original company.

That's because a lot of the footage was used from 3D Realms' tech which I assume Gearbox inherited from Take 2 who own the IP.

At least it's in playable form. The last 2 duke videos form... jesus christ 1998 and 2001 were admittedly smoke and mirrors.

The video was made by one of the 3D Realms staff. From looking at what he does, the video seemed like his CV. No-one talked to anyone about the game since they started it over a year ago.

The morning that the video clip was done, the dude said it was the first time that 2K had spoken to retailers about it, so I severely doubt that it was the company themselves.

Perhaps footage wasn't the correct word. When Gearbox took over the project they inherited all of 3D Realms tech, the most finished of which was shown in the videos we saw a few months ago. It's only natural that Gearbox would build on this in order to make a playable demo in time for PAX.

    Master of the Universe

Duke Nukem - Run, point, shoot. Stuff money in a pole dancer's thong. Run, point, shoot.

Halo - Run, point, shoot. Attempt at pretentious story/dialog. Run, point, shoot.

Hasn't really changed all that much in the last decade tbh.

System Shock 2 - Run, point, shoot, upgrade stats, use psi powers, investigate massive non-linear play area, repair weapons, scavenge for vital resources and ammo, research enemies, choose the correct ammo for each enemy, attempt and succeed at pretentious story, piece together story segments yourself, hack security.

It has changed, it's just gotten a lot dumber.

Ancient history at this stage, weren't there pre-release screens of DNF on cavemens walls?

Yeah, it's on the XBLA with all the add ons.

I'm not surprised by this. The IP and code were probably going cheap as the publisher tried to make back some of its money. Gearbox probably picked it up for a good price. A nearly finished game with a strong brand recognition for not that much. You would be mad not to.

Now all they have to do is finish the game, which by the looks of it doesn't require that much more work, and put it out there.

The problem at 3DRealms seems to have been the lead designer just couldn't get a freaking game out there, always changing things. Gearbox shouldn't have that problem.

Pretty sure they have finished it, having worked on it for over a year.

Man I thought I was the dogs bollocks playing this when I was a kid. It was covertly played away from parents eyes in my friends house.

It's a game about blowing stuff, cursing and one liners. I'm not much of a gaming guy anymore but I'm definitely picking this up and pretending I'm a child again.
