Because they want to. Sometimes to make up for their own insecurities, sometimes to confirm their own prejudices and sometimes because the truth is not as exciting or too hard to take.

Ignorance, laziness and the media capitalising on it.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

My father-in-law got a flyer in the door from a right wing group claiming that if we didn't stop Nigerian immigration now, all 110 million* of them were going to land up on our doorstep! He swallowed that ****e, but we'll excuse it as he was in his dotage.

    *Pop now approx 159 million.

One cause is known in sociology as ingroup/outgroup bias. You love your ingroup, you hate the hate group.

It's the basis for racial inequality and tribal warfare, an unfortunate leftover from primative psychology.

I saw a Polish guy kill a swan in the Claddagh in Galway about 3 years ago and he just walked off with it. I can only presume to butcher it.

Most people are idiots, that's why.

This is a small parochial country, so there are a lot of people around whose only view of the world is the little town that they live in, very little in life will ever stimulate their brains into action so it's easier to go with the flow than actually form an educated opinion of most things.

People believe stupid things because it befits them to do so.
Either they are stupid (most people are stupid on some level) or it's convenient to believe that foreigners get free cars and eat swans because it makes it easier to dislike them.

Here's incontrovertible proof that the Polish steal swans in the UK, from the Lincolnshire Echo, April 23rd, 2008.
Man 'stole swan to eat it'

A SWAN was stolen from Lincoln's Brayford Pool by a man who claimed he was planning to eat it.
Witnesses reported seeing the incident yesterday.
The man is thought to have stolen the bird from the water close to the corner of Lucy Tower Street.
Lincolnshire Police spokesman Deborah Tinsley said: “Police were called to the scene at lunchtime after a man allegedly caught a swan and carried it off in a purple blanket.

“Unfortunately, by the time officers arrived the man had disappeared and it is not known what happened to the swan.”
The man is described as white, in his 30s with short brown hair and a beard. He was wearing a red and black checked jacket and is of medium height.
Anyone with information on the incident or the whereabouts of the animal is asked to call Lincolnshire Police on (01522) 882222.

Well, there you go. If I ever see that guy I think I'll shoot him dead on the spot. What a scumbag.

    Hang on...what's this?
A swan that people thought had been stolen from Lincoln's Brayford Pool was actually being rescued by a member of the Swan Preservation Society.

The Echo was contacted by concerned eye-witnesses yesterday who said the man claimed he was planning to eat it.

But today it has been confirmed the bird was, in fact, injured and was being taken to be looked after.

Lincolnshire Police spokesman Deborah Tinsley had said: "Police were called to the scene at lunchtime after a man allegedly caught a swan and carried it off in a purple blanket.

The Swan Preservation Society would not comment any further.

I applaud your linguistic skills and your well proven ability to differentiate between eastern european languages. It's also quite fortunate that he was talking away audiably whilst killing his swan.

I was there as well, and distinctly remember that the Polish guy had perfect English, I even wrote down what he said: "My Polish mother and father in Krakow, where I was born, will be really pleased when I send them a photo of this swan that I've just killed"

As he was walking away, he dropped his passport, and I picked it up, read it and handed it back to him. It was definitely a Polish passport, and he said "Thank you for picking up my Polish passport, I'd be lost without it".
