Edited title, to include Killer Whales/Orcas
Will be better picked up in searches etc

Interesting that they reckon both types visit Ireland, but I have never heard of a seal being attacked.
But then I don't talk with seals much. :D

There was some discussion of this on boards last year, and whether there are two types of Great White Shark too. There was no genetic evidence at the time though. Certainly there is much more yet to be discovered.

Please keep in mind that we are talking about these species diverging rapidly in evolutionary time. A further 100 years would be nothing; particularly for a species with a relatively slow generation timing. The full report is much less sensationalised.

Let's not get carried away with this particular story.

    right so.

I find it pretty amazing that one simple amino acid in a protein can make so much difference

All type B orcas have replaced one type of amino acid with another at a place on the gene known as site 279, and type Cs had replaced another amino acid at site 193.

Divergence of species comes about from even less. Think what molecular chnage led to an amino acid bond change. that's the wholepoint. Evolution is a series of minute changes over time. Genetics need very little variance to lead to immense differences. Look at the amount of shared genes between humans and Zebra or Parrots and Fish.
