I'm just wondering, out of interest, if anyone would know which train station in Dublin has the lowest passenger footfall? Is it Broombridge given the state that its in?

Keep it quiet, if you mention the lesser used lines in Dublin we will have a campaign started to turn it into a cycle route!!;) Just look at the WRC thread!!:D:D:D

How about docklands at the weekend? :D

Broombridge seems to be "busier" than Phoenix Park at least.. no facts, just my own observation.

Ive gone through Adamstown a good bit never anyone there!!!

Judging from experience I reckon Phoenix Park too! No one gets on or off, bit of a novelty when they do:p
I half wonder if there are still commuters who desperately search for parking around Ashtown when in fact there's a huge (and largely empty carpark+station) around the corner?
Adamstown too is also another quiet one. Broombridge actually sees more use than some might think, it does serve a very large area.

People never get on at Phoenix Park. Saw a few people get on on St. Patrick's day, and there might be one person the *odd* time. Saw 2 women with their children get off a Phoenix Park on a lovely sunny day, I hope they weren't thinking they were going to the zoo or anything:eek:

Used by hundreds of not thousands every weekend. Its just that they call them revellers, not passengers.

Amen. Any time I've been on a DART passing Seapoint, there are very few people at that particular station. It seems to be its busiest at rush-hour. While it is good to see these places being serviced by the DART, I do think Irish Rail could have afforded not having it there. If this were the case, the DART could pick up a lot of speed between Monkstown and Blackrock. This certainly seems to be the case with the Commuter trains. I have often thought that some DART runs could be made to skip stations such as Monkstown and Seapoint. However, given that the frequency of DARTs was generally reduced last christmas, the aforementioned skipping of these stations would not go down too well. On the other hand, Monkstown and Seapoint stations are within walking distance of the high frequency number 7 bus.

I would certainly agree that the "so-called" Phoenix Park station is empty a lot of the time. I know this because when I was working for IBM in Damastown, I would usually resort to getting off the 38 and 38A buses due to the shere length of time they were taking to get into town. I also used it because there are a few trains stopping there from Maynooth which go straight to Bray and on to Gorey or Rosslare Europort. I would alight the train at Dun Laoghaire and get a DART or the 59 up to Dalkey. Doing so would usually have cut half an hour off my journey time. It is such a shame that Phoenix Park station isn't being used to it's potential. By that, I mean for feeder buses to the likes of Ballycoolin, Tyrellstown and Damastown. The reason why I make this suggestion is because it has a very good stretch of infrastructure (N3) beside it along with a bridge ramp which would make it a perfect location for feeder buses. This would certainly encourage a lot more use out of it. While the frequency of trains is not efficient enough to justify a frequent feeder bus system, it could very well be streamlined upon the electrification of the Maynooth line.

Of course, when the Luas is extended to Cherrywood, Brennanstown will be served by neither road nor rail. I think it will be hard to beat for the number of users. :)

Cherry Orchard and Parkwest or Fonthill Road maybe?

Is inchicore a station? I'm sure it probably is officially? Would ill not have the lowest number of passengers!

Not really, as catering staff also use it. Are they passengers or crew though? :)

Phoenix Park for definite. Desolate, creepy place. They must make tops 50 euro a day.
See there was supposed to be a big apartment complex the other side of the motorway and they weren't allowed to build it unless they finished the station, then they ran out of money and you just have this massive useless station.

The adamstown station is a bit useless as well. I think its insane they built a whole station, and theres no connecting bus from lucan village. Its also mad that its not on the maynooth line

It'd not have been in Adamstown in that case! Developer built again, as was Hansfield.

Surely, Kishoge wins by a country mile. Built but never opened - a bit like Hansfield. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,373 ✭✭✭✭foggy_lad

But there it is "built but never opened" so technically it can't qualify as a station while most trains into or out of heuston stop in inchicore!

I would have said Phoenix Park over Broombridge but in the last 6 months or so, I'm seeing more people get off/on at PP but none at Broombridge. I see the Docklands route has dropped Broombridge altogether from a lot of it's services.Surely, those very low volume stations could be timetabled so maybe 1 in 4 services stop there rather than every service (ie all non express Maynooth to Connolly services stop in both BB and PP when there is simply no demand for it).It would be interesting if IR provided a list of all stations by number of annual passengers. I believe surprisingly that Tara Street is the busiest station in all of Ireland...and doesn't have public toilets!

It was rumoured to have 25,000 passengers per day two years ago. I've never seen those figures substantiated but it's believable enough for a main city centre station.

Why on earth would it have toilets - it's an urban/suburban station.

passenger comfort/convenience maybe but thats an alien idea for irish rail!

I don't know of any metro station in any city I've visited in western Europe or America that had toilets. You're not going to be hanging around for very long - show up, get on train, go to the toilet when you reach your destination.

I used Phoenix Park for about 6 months on a daily basis last year. And it felt like I had my own personal train station. 9 out of 10 times I was the only one getting on/off the train there...
Maybe in the distant future when the apartments on the other side of the N3 are built some passengers might use it...

Toronto's subway network has a small number of toilets at termini and stations where lines intersect. Given the lack of effort in keeping them clean some have suggested putting McDonalds in those stations in the same zone because they would actually send someone in to mop the floor more than once a day.

Adamstown - never more than 6 or 7 people getting on/off during rush hour.

This was a while ago though.

Defo Broombridge, its horrible, and it looks like its been set on fire so many times! never see anyone get on or off there. Phoenix park is the same, its so new though and its never used! such a shame!!:)

Actually I passed phoenix park on a nonstop docklands bound train this morning and it had more people waiting than castleknock ashtown or broombridge. Still only six or seven. This was at about 9:25

I think it was overtaken in the past two years by Pearse Station. It still comfortably retains second spot though.

Of course, IE are busy refurbishing Connolly rather than dealing with the roof etc. at Pearse or even providing modern facilities at Tara Street.

Would the reason be the concentration of junkies in those areas?

If there were to be toilets there, IR would have to have a serious security presence.

Another issue at Phoenix Park is (ironically) the parking. It's advertised as a park 'n ride facility, but the pricing is the same as urban stations - it's cheaper just to sit in traffic than pay for parking and your train ticket. Given that the nearest housing/business is quite far away, the only reason you'd park at the station is to use the train, ergo it should be cheaper.

I'll admit to being caught by Apcoa early one morning without a parking ticket. Didn't have change and no sign of staff so I hopped on the train and rang my wife to get pay the parking. When she arrived an hour later the car was already clamped. There was one other car in the carpark at the time.

I didn't even mean in terms of toilets - the platform level section of the station is essentially a temporary structure which has never been replaced. I've never seen so much corrugated iron in my life!
