Hey guys.....Whats the best place to buy textbooks? Is the on-campus bookstore good or will they just rip me off?

The students union run a buying/selling service for second hand books.

For new books I can't say, but I'm sure someone else will know better.

People set the prices themselves for the SU books and the SU charge a €2/3 charge. books are cheaper in the SU than in the bookstore under the library. you might pay €55 there for a book. same book (might be an earlier edition but still same content) in the SU might be €40 so check out the SU first (upstairs in Aras na Mac Leinn, beside the college bar). books tend to sell out quicker in the SU. i had to buy a chem book last year in the bookstore. :)

to be honest your better of just getting to the library and using the books there.no matter where u buy the books they will be over-priced and you won't get half the price back that you paid for them.
Even sharing a book with a friend who is doing the same subject is good because you will save some money between the two of you.

There are usually loads of notices up on the SU walls advertising books for sale so just keep a look out.

Some of the prices in the library bookstore are just scandalous. There was one book that I was supposed to get, costing €45, but I decided to get another book covering the same information in the SU shop for just a fiver and it did the job nicely. The older editions of textbooks are less dumb-downed tbh, usually meaning they're better.

Depending on your course, you will get a book list as long as your arm for every module. Most only have two relevant chapters. Go to the library, maybe photocopy the important bits. Don't go out in week one and purchase a massive pile of books.

Figure out the most important ones, the ones that are most use to you. You can ask a tutor or lecturer.

Then, check posters around college, there shall be LOADS. And the SU bookshop. Charlie Byrne's in town has certain books too.

I don't think the MyMathLab is valid after a year, is it?
Generally one is forced to buy the new book, iirc. And if the other books use a similar online scheme, generally they'll be asked to buy them knew - horrible and all as that is.
I know it's caveat emptor and all that, but meh.

As other people have said don't rush to buy all the books that they say you should, use the library to get an idea of how good the book is and figure out if it's really worth buying. If there are a good number of the books in the library and you're willing to use the library on a regular basis you probably won't need to buy. If you do decide to buy avoid the bookshop, it's overpriced. Buy second hand or check online at amazon or the book depository, online is almost always cheaper.

Sorry I'm selling that to someone here during the week, I'll edit my post.

But yeah, definitely try and get that book second-hand; it's around €32 in the bookshop - very expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 122 ✭✭WillyWaggler

Do we need the archaeology book? I haven't heard the lecturer mention it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭Lockstep

Depending on the subject, buying one general textbook can very handy. My usual way of doing things was to buy a standard one, and then use the library for everything else.
Books are very expensive, so there's no point buying them all (unless you're loaded). However, you never know when a book might be out so it's always handy to have a copy that can give you a general overview.
