Weak Handshakes

What the f*ck is up them?

I went to meet a new client today & offered a handshake, as I always do in such circumstances, only to be met with a handshake weaker than a 20 day old piece of lettuce.

I took an instant dislike to the man. To be honset, I'd prefer a handcrusher.

I think they should teach people how to shake hands properly in school - it's a social faux pas not to know how to shake hands like a normal person.

    I'm the same.

I'm instantly suspicious of someone with a weak handshake.

    Amen to that !!

aw no handcrushers are just as bad. You can tell that somebody just said to them in their early life: "a man is judged by his handshake" So all they do now is give bonecrushers.

You need to feel and match the other person's grip. That's how its done!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,554 ✭✭✭✭alwaysadub

Ooh i hate that too. Put a bit of effort into it ffs. Specially when they've just offered their hand, why bother in the first place if they're not gonna even make an attempt at it.

I think handshakes are a really weird custom, I wonder where and why they originated.

Edit - intermagoogle, here i come.

Generally think of them as insincere people.

Maybe he simply didn't want to touch you because of your scruffy appearance?

    Were your hands clean?

There's an episode of King of the Hill where Hank meets George Bush who greets Hank with a limp handshake, needless to say Hank is not impressed and loses all respect for Bush and rightly so.

    Weak handshakers are untrustworthy cretins.

I generally match the other person's handshake but if I am self-concious about sweaty palms then I kind of give a weaker shake. *hangs head in shame*

So meet a weak handshake with a weak one.. Don't think so.

I hate when you go in for a firm handshake and the other person clamps down on your fingertips. It's palm to palm or don't bother.

I think it originated in older times to show someone you didn't have a weapon/were going to stab/club them.

I hate a weak handshake aswell, but when someone grabs your fingers instead of a shaking your hand I want to punch them. Its a stupid dominance ploy.

There's a good article on it here; http://soc302.tripod.com/soc_302rocks/id8.html

I skimmed it & it originated from 2 Arabs kissing in the desert, or something like that.

    What about the "weak-handshake-but-slow-and-ticklish-pull-away" one.

    They're the worst.

But also, you know what they say about people with limp handshakes...

Its a very strange thing, limp almost lifeless handshake...similar to a fish...

    like this

    http://vedru24.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/limp-handshake.jpg

I sometimes wonder what it would be like if two limp handshakers were to shake hands

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 418 ✭✭The Paws

I always give a good hand shake - both hands if needed!!!

I hate it when strong/tall/big men gave you a really weak hand shake - not a bit of effort there.

come on people shake their hands a bit more - wildly if you must....!

I'd imagine Enda Kenny has a weak handshake :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,921 ✭✭✭Odelay

AKA the pussy willow, it's weak and saggy as hell, has no strength or confidence at all.

My first employer told me that I got the job because I had a strong handshake. Years later I use it to help judge first impressions. Not always but often it is a good indicator.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭Sanjuro

Yeah, agreed. Weak handshakes just make you think 'not worth my time.'

I hate weak handshakes its just not right.

You will always have more respect for people who have a firm handshake!

Some people just don't know that people take offense to limp handshakes, so they don't know they're in the wrong

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,555 ✭✭✭✭AckwelFoley

    I respect a strong handshake

I always watch people after they shake hands, they subconsiously wipe their hand discreatly after it within 20 second.

    Watch for it next time.

There are two types of limp handshakes
    1) is a bit feeble with a slight attempt to compensate for it with a false smile at the end.
    2) is a total wet fish and it obvious the person is not more interested in meeting you than the man in the moon (hate this one with a passion)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,706 ✭✭✭fonecrusher1

    I prefer a high 5.

However it can be embarrassing if the other person chooses not to participate & i have to pretend i was just stretching my arm or something.:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,378 ✭✭✭mojesius

So does anyone agree that there's really no need for it anymore?

All we're doing is judging someone's character by their grip, not reassuring them we're not yielding a weapon.

Or, is the handshake in fact the weapon of the corporate world?

The worst is a weak shake from a clammy, cold hand.

I damaged my hand punching a solid thing some time ago. Cant squeeze anything wihout pain. Hand injurys are very common.

don't understand handshakes, not really into physical contact. only real contact i know tends to be violent

if someone wants to handshake, sure i stick it out to be shuck - if they try n crush it i punch them the f**k out.

i get the impression i'd punch a lot of u out. firmly

You are not supposed to shake the hand of the person in the coffin. Just say a prayer and move on.

This man could be the next leader of the free world! Third World dictators will be walking all over us when they find out the man in charge doesn't have a strong enough finger to push the button.

:mad::mad: Curse and bad cess to everyone on this thread! I have a touch of arthritis in my hand, which usually doesn’t bother me much. Indeed, I frequently forget altogether that I have it until I offer the paw to some big lump of a builder who proceeds to set me roarin’.

Can we not have an alternative custom like sticking out your tongue to show you have no gun in your mouth or something?

I used to weakly handshake as I was paranoid about crushing hands and stuff, I honestly never thought of it as rude. I know better now and crush hands, slap, grab cocks etc....

    Why not tell people beforehand?

I broke my right wrist and suffered nerve damage to my fingers which affected me for about 9 months. I just told people as I was shaking hands my hand was damaged.

I think men should continue to handshake, as it's a manly thing to do. But women should rub their breasts against each other when they meet each other & when they meet men, they should offer them up for a good squeeze / honk.

The only thing worse than a weak handshake is a handshake with someone that looks concerned about the pressure they're applying to your fingers. That takes the idea of a handshake to a whole new uncomfortable level
