Dieting with thyroid problems

Hi All - Just wondering if anyone can advise, I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid about 6 months ago, I lost weight initially, however I was also trying to, so wasn't sure if it was the thyroid or dieting. Since then my GP put me on meds to control it...this then sent me into underactive, he then lowered the dosage to hopefully get me to the correct levels which I'm currently on & will see what next blood tests show. I eat quite healthy with lots of exercise, however I've gained 10lbs in the past 2 months.... Ahhhh!! Has anyone else experienced this and if so how do you control your weight? Any advice, tips or feedback would be very much appreciated. Thanks

    Hi fancyabrew

All I can tell you is that its a struggle. The weight can come off, but I always feel I have to work twice as hard to achieve it.

I was also hyper/Graves...and to add insult to injury I was also one of the 4% of hyper patients who *gain* rather than lose when hyper...it took a long time for my Endo to concede that....and that was only after 12 months of nagging with the hospital's dietitian :D

Now I'm technically hypo. after having a total thyroidectomy earlier this year, so I guess as well as taking thyroid replacement meds for the rest of my life, I'm slowly waking up to the fact that I'll also be dieting constantly for the rest of my life...ho hum!

Best of luck with it all...both with the weight loss and with your thyroid issues ;)

Hi Dolly - Thanks for that, it's really appreciated and I'm sorry to hear your's resulted in surgery. That's awful. At least now I suppose we understand what needs to be done and why we feel the way we do.
What do you normally eat to stay trim with this? Is there certain foods that I should be eating more of..or less of, apart from the obvious fattening stuff that is! I'm just trying to work out how my diet should be, what the most effective foods to eat are. What's ur normal diet?
    Thanks again

I have an underactive thyroid, and I put on a lot of weight even though I was eating healthy and running a lot. It took some time to get my meds to the right level, in the meantime I went to see a nutritionist. She advised that it's likely (but obviously not 100% guaranteed) that I will always lose weight at a slower pace than other people, but that once my meds are sorted that it should be possible to lose weight. She did say to keep up the running and healthy eating, but that it may make sense to wait till my meds were sorted before trying to lose the weight.

Once the meds were sorted, with a lot of effort I lost weight.

I have had to change my medication in the last few months and have gained weight while we balance out what the right levels on the new meds are for me. However, I have also joined weight watchers, and while it won't work for everyone, I am achieving a slow steady weight loss (so far have lost 6lbs in 3 weeks).

So for me personally, once my thyroid levels are balanced by the meds, then with a lot of effort, it is possible to lose weight.
    Good luck!
