Relaxing body massage after a training session.

    After a hard training session, I find that my calves, shoulders and glutes are sore. Is it a good idea to get a relaxing full body massage after a hard training session? Would it benefit the muscles in any other way besides relaxing the sore body?

    It surely would. The cool-down sports massage is designed to help the recovery of your sore muscles by manually removing toxins (mainly lactic acid) from the tissues. It as well enhances the recovery by putting your mind into a very nice, relaxed state, and it helps to accelerate damaged tissues reconstruction.

    On the other hand, if your muscles are regularly sore after the workout (I guess you talk about weights), then try light cardiovascular activity (jogging, cycling, swimming,...) for 10 minutes at the end of your session, followed by thorough stretching. It should take loads of lactic acid away from your muscles and therefore the DOMS (Deleyed Onset Muscle Soreness - that's the name they gave it:rolleyes:) will be (almost) eliminated. I say almost because only one part of DOMS is caused by the build up of lactic acid. The other part of the problem are the micro-tears in your muscle fibers that occur because of the workout, and these need time to heal. Therefore, a nice, protein food after workout is always a great idea (protein 're-builds' damaged tissues) and an early night as well :)
