New iPods/Sept 1st Event

I almost bought a 160gb iPod classic yesterday until I remembered this iPod event Apple are holding this week.

I want an ipod classic for the car and for nightime audiobook listening.

It seems like theres a good chance that Apple will retire the iPod classic this week. The fact that it can't run ios/apps and has no internet connectivity makes it seem a bit antiquated but the 160gb storage is a big draw.

I have a 32gb 3gs so i'm not interested in an ipod touch with 64gb.

Anyone think the iPod classic will be still around in 2011?

I think the classic will survive another year until flash is cheap/small enough to stuff 128GB into a touch.

    +1,

If they get rid of the 160gb then they will have to replace it with something that can handle the large capacity. And i really dont see them releasing a 128gb ipod touch. I think we will see a 64gb iphone before that.

The 1.8" micro drives that are used in the ipod classic have been available in 320gb for almost a year. What are the chances of a 320gb iPod?

Slim i would think, there wouldnt be a huge demand for a device that can carry that much music. And the ipod classic really is just a music player. Its crap at everything else.

Itouch 4G is apparently being unveiled this week, rumours on other ipod forums in the US claim is has dual cameras like the iphone 4, id love if it had 3Gbecause im sick of wifi and i don’t want an iphone so 3G itouch would be great

But thats what i'm looking for - a music player with big storage. I don't need apps, cameras or a solid state drive. I'm in the minority it seems.

But if it has 3G then in essence it is Iphone. :D
I don’t see that happening really, they already have Ipad for that market.

lol thats what the yanks keep saying, some are actually up in arms at the thought of it! but to be fair, if they give me an itouch with internet anytime, example 3g with no monthly contract for a phone, no phone app, no messaging app, im happy with that. I would love an itouch with internet on the go, pisses me off needing wifi! and i dont want an iphone lol one can dream!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Fat_Fingers

Yeah, if they did it with Ipad then why not internet on the go (3G) with new Ipod. Next evolutionary step me thinks.

Um, don't you need a sim card for the iPad in the same way you need one for the iPhone? i.e. You will always need to pay a provider for 3G.

Yes you do, only i think a data plan is cheap enough per month? Plus if you cannot make calls as it isn’t a phone, or send texts, you only pay for what you download, i don’t think its unreasonable and i cant see it hurting iphone sales, i simply would like itouch with 3g for when im on a bus or something, i can arse around on the net with it.

    iPod touch with 3G?

Isn't that an iPhone with a data-only SIM stuck in it?

Makes perfect sense to call it an itouch. Same as calling the iPod Classic the Classic.

However theres different generations of the touch and the classic, sometimes with big differences in SQ.

Some places will stuff a 240GB drive in the iPod for you.

No it would be OK to call the iPod Touch "The Touch" where you would call an iPod Classic "The Classic"

Im not going to call the iPod Classic the iClassic am I. It sounds stupid, Just like the iTouch

I'm sure Pasen wouldn't agree as they own the name "iTouch" on this......

A 3G Touch would be great and would be the next logical step for the Touch but won't happen. The biggest advantage the iPhone has over the Touch is internet on the go via 3G. If Apple put 3G on the Touch, there would be very little reason for anyone to buy an iPhone. Hope to see a 128GB Touch this year but will probably be unlikely as it is still expensive memory.

Would a 3G Touch not just be an iPhone?

Don't understand what you mean by "The biggest advantage the Touch has over the iPhone is internet on the go via 3G", the iPhone has internet on the go via 3G... the touch needs wifi to get on line...

Getting rid of the Classic in the next 18 months-2 years will cost them one sale with me anyway. :pac:

It is going to happen eventually :D Once the Touch hits 128Gb at a reasonable price, the Classic will be dead. Apple wants everyone to run iOS at this stage. I reckon it will have another year but that's it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

The size obviously is relative to the quality you rip to, and also if you have video aswell. Though thats more likely on a itouchu than thats classic since the screen is much better. I've about 90GB but thats between a few people in the family. mainly 256~320. That said I could probably drop a lot of crud and duplications. Still if had a third of that and when lossless I'm sure it would each massive amounts of space.

I'm looking forward to the new iNano and wonder what they'll do with the iShuffle. I can't see them being able to do much with the iClassic though.

Not necessarily! I've got a wifi ipad, use MyWi to turn my iphone into a wifi hotspot.

Means I can use the iPad via my iPhone's unlimited data plan.

Not really......you couldn't call an iPod with 3G an iPhone because it wouldn't necessarily have the
erm .... Phone or text functionality. In essence it would be a mini iPad!

Technically the Touch could make calls with a bit of Jailbreaking, and Apple know this too. But of course you would need the headphones to make calls.

Bit lacklustre for me this year. Not disgustingly excited as usual :( the only thing I'm really excited about is the new apple tv, as I intend to get one. However, I strongly doubt we'll see it on Wednesday.

Unless its completely redesigned hold off buying AppleTV until you hear reports and reviews . Just saying as last one was truly rubbish, at least my one. Had it returned for refund after 5 days. ( dropping connections, overheating, white screen of death, not recognised by Itunes..)

Here's what MacRumors says we have in store:
    Rumors

Here are the major rumors heading into the event.

    - Apple TV - A next generation Apple TV based on iOS, priced at only $99, as well as support for Apps.
    - iPod Touch - Backside camera, mic, new shape, front facing camera, possible 3G and even a Retina display.
    - iPod Nano - Smaller, square shaped design with a 3cm x 3cm touch screen. Case manufacturers have already been producing covers for the unannounced device (see above).
    - Other updates to iTunes including TV show rentals and longer song previews.

    Speculation

Meanwhile, here's a collection of fun speculative content that we can't verify, but in the run up to the event may inspire some interesting discussion:

    - iPad 4.0? - We expect Apple will announce their plans for the deployment of iOS 4 for the iPad during the event. It's unlikely Apple will be able to launch tomorrow as Apple still needs developers to update their apps. So, hopefully we'll get a roadmap and a developer beta of iOS 4 for iPad.
    - 2.8" iPod touch? iLounge suggests that perhaps we will see the long rumored 2.8" iPod touch emerge to fill the gap left by the former iPod nano.
    - iPhone as Apple TV Remote? iLounge's Charles Starrett speculates that the rumored $99 Apple TV might actually require an iOS device to serve as a remote. Beyond his speculation, we'd actually heard unconfirmed whispers of the same, so it seems within the realm of possibility.
    - iLife Mystery App is a Make Your Own App Tool? Rumors of iLife '11 suggested a brand new app would be introduced with the iLife '11 suite. We've heard an unconfirmed whispers that the new app could actually be a way for end users to create simple apps and deploy them directly (not through the App Store) to their iOS devices. Is Apple returning to their Hypercard roots? It's hard to say how feasible this would be.

We should see something exciting for 4.0 for the iPad seeing as they put it off till the Autumn, probably something involving the widgets which were unusually missing from the iPad.

Id say they will release the developers Beta for iPad 4.0, All the apps would have to be converted first

iPad needs 4.0 so badly, it's really not funny. I've gotten tired of using it since I got the iPhone 4 as I had having the apps on about 15 different pages!

    very very very doubtful.

it will make the situation look worse than it already was. everyone forgot about the antenna situation a week after that press conference, except for apple who kept bringing back to the spotlight.

releasing a new phone with an updated antenna will not only nullify that press conference they had in july it will also admit they were wrong and also piss off a lot of customers.

the whole antenna situation was blown way way way out of proportion and if anything it just showed how bad AT&T's network was rather than any fault of the phone.

    tomorrow we will see.

    definite:
new nano and new ipod touch.
4.0 for ipad. or perhaps 4.1 for both ipad and iphone.
some info on the antennagate, stopping the shipment of free cases i'd say too.

    hopefuls:
    appleTV upgrade
