How would you react? Sickened? Shocked? Leaving the country?
the third option would be my choice

Is there even a chance of this happening does anybody think, or have they well and truly jumped off the cliff in the eyes of the electorate?

    The world will end.

    It certainly could happen.

The views you read on boards aren't reflected in real world
Sure that other thread had huge support for socialist parties, must be a lot of idealistic students around here.
Wait until they start working and paying 41% tax, their views will swiftly change

Well I'm planning on leaving in 2012 anyways so it doesn't make a massive difference to me.

sure bertie will be the president by then. the fcuking people of this country gall me, every fcuking day i hear somebody moaning about FF, then you ask them who they voted for and it's invariably FF.

I'd hope that every single vote would be counted again as I honestly couldn't see it happening without some sort of dodgy dealings and even that shower (I now refuse to even use their name) wouldn't try rigging an election.

If FF got into goverment again soon, we deserve everything we get, how could the people of this country vote them back in. no way

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,595 ✭✭✭bonerm

Why wouldn't it happen? Most people have memories like goldfish. As usual FF get the hardships out and bad press out of the way now and hold back on all the sweetners and carrots until late next year and by election time they'll be more popular than Ashley Cole in a gay bar.

That said tho Biffos face emblasoned on giant billboards around the country could be an election loser in itself.

Very true, but I do get the feeling that this time the anger is out there and very real beyond the realms of boards.ie and politics.ie .

In the locals there were stories of FF candidates getting dogs abuse (well deservedly IMO) at the doorsteps - to the extent that many even ended up hiding their party affiliation on their literature in the hopes of being mistaken for an independent...

Depends what there spin doctors do to fool the electorate in the mean time. Generally what goes up must go down and visa versa. Judging by how gullible our electorate seem (yes to jobs, yes to europe ) I wouldn`t be remotely suprised. Actually tbh I`m nearly expecting it.

One worry is that Labour and Fine Gael may not be good enough to win though. A lot of votes for them would be more anti-governemtn votes than actual votes on their own policies. Leading the way to a whole bunch of independents getting inandholding government to ransom with Jackie Healy-Rae's brand of parish pump politics.

Hardly matters, the worlds going to end isn't it? The Mayans clearly knew that Fianna Fail were destined to be returned to office.

There is so much anger out there now and its not just in the working classs areas,I will be surprised if they have 10 tds left.

If labour go for it by there own without coliation they will do well, imo.

I know what you're saying but as a believer in democracy I perhaps naively believe it couldn't happen in Ireland.

    thats crazy

    I don't see it happening.

The only scenario I can see is that Enda continues to perform weakly (let's be nice and leave it there) and people realise that a Fine Gael-Labour coalition would probably be lead by Labour due to Gilmore's strength and Kenny's weakness.

Many people don't want a Labour dominated government, and might slide back to FF or sit the election out.

Even then, people are fairly mad so I doubt it.

FF won't get 41% of the vote like they did in 2007, but I wouldn't bet on them getting less than 30%-31% at election time which would be a damning indictment of that proportion of the electorate.

    And yes, they'll start handing out these little sweetners towards the tail end of 2011 to try and curry favour. probably something like increasing Childrens allowance by €3 a week or cutting some other tax while increasing some other stealth tax to get the money back some how. Classic FF sleight of hand - and people will say;

'Ah but sure, they increased the Childers allowance....'

Irish people vote like they are supporting a football team; they pick the team and support it through thick and thin. Then you add parish pump gombeenism into the equation (sure, he fixed the pothole, got me my passport) and this is the root of FF's success.

I'll be surprised if they're wiped out at the next election (no matter what anger you hear on Whineline).

And in answer to the question what would I do if they got into power? Well I already had to leave the country to find work but have registered to vote in the next election and will be flying home specifically to cast my vote to try and get the talentless FF Gombeen TD in my area out of power.

If FF get into power then its Adios Ireland! forever....

If they did, I think we'll see a re-emergence of the gun in Irish politics.

I happen to like Lenihan. Sure I joked earlier about voting for him...

But at the same time, I wouldn't hold much confidence in the opposition doing much better (or different).

the funny thing is they'd probably get more support with a slogan like that,i'd vote for them anyway

I think thats actually the reason the Maya calender ends in 2012, because Fianna Fail got re-elected.

Ah no seriously... they can't.... Can they? :(

fianna fail & fainna gael should just join together, maybe that would help our beloved country

It could easily happen. You can see how entrenched in old civil war tribalism most of the FF and FG cronies up in the Dáil are, alot of their voters are 10 times worse!

I think its comical how the older generation support political parties like others support football teams, its a kind of blind fanatism. They can see little wrong in them. One old guy I was speaking too recently thought the ship jumping that goes on with the British electorate was a disgrace. "You'd think the fúckers would stick with one crowd" :pac:

Thats the most ridiculous thing Ive heard in along time. Its that atitude that gives incompetants, like the present government free reign to do whatever the **** they like with the country, as they know the voters will invariably say "ah shure til be grand, they know what they're doin up there, me father was a fianna failer, shure Id have to be the same!"

In 10, 20 years when all the young people who've been fúcked over by this recession form the main body of voters, then we'll hopefully see a change in this.

 Its absolutely pathetic that this is the state Irish politics is in but I agree...

Give Labour, the lefties and the indo's a go, worse case scenario they're just as bad as FF. They certainly cannot be any worse!

I do think we do have a better system then the UK.
Over there, certain areas are completely dominated by one party.
You can parachute in anybody and they'd still win the seat.
The greatest politician that existed could still fail to be elected if they were in the wrong area.

At least here candidates have to fight for their seats, somewhat anyway.
THere are shocks results every time

Paddy Power are offering 33/1 on a FF/FG government after the next election. Strikes me as very low odds indeed, but stranger things have happened.

Voting FF in again after this monumental mess up would be like the battered wife taking her husband back after the worst of a long line of beatings. They really would feel like they own us and they can do whatever the hell they like.

It would be a disaster for this country if people are foolish enough to vote them in again after their gross mismanagement of the economy over the last decade. They are reaking of arrogance now as it is, they continue to live out their well paid lavish lifestyles, abuse the government jet, expenses etc. All while making the ordinary man and woman on the street to bear the hardships of their mess up.

Be very wary of these people (FF) they are not good news imo.

    signed,
a former FF voter (to my shame).

Or just force everyone to vote again until they get the result THEY want

I remember overhearing a conversation between an older women and a shop assistant in Cork during the last general, in the middle of the Bertie Tribunal cases...

Shop Assistant: "So who are you voting for then?"
Old Women: "I'm voting for Bertie!"
Shop Assistant: "Ah but Bertie's corrupt..."
Old Women: "Ah but shur aren't we all a bit corrupt at the end of the day? Fair play to him"

Sums up Irish politics (or lack thereof) beautifully in my opinion...

Does anyone think that things would be different under Fine Gael? Seems to be a choice between two different brands of vanilla ice-cream to me.

To be fair that sums up politics.

There is a long way to go before the next election I for one will make my decisions closer to the time. Hopefully the major parties will have leadership changes and offer some form of workable alternates.

Hence my statement that if they did somehow manage to wangle their way in, the level of public anger and outrage would push past critical mass and spill into the streets.
My statement about the gun re-emerging or politicians being shot are somewhat facetious, but in reality revolt could not be far behind any such election result (regardless of your views on democracy)...short of any such revolt pre-empting an election.
