It did a pretty good job of looking closed! I was there a couple of weeks ago and the lights were off, doors locked, not a single product to be seen!

Just a sign on the door saying PC World coming soon.

From what I've heard, theyre sharing the building with Currys so both shops will be open. I'm looking for a new laptop at the moment so probably wait until the place opens fully before buying anything

Aye, I think a lot of the Currys stuff is now upstairs, so shop is spread across two floors.

Guys, I can give you a clear picture on this. The new store will open toward the end of September. Current target is the 23rd/ 24th but safer to call it for the end of the month. It's one of four that we're doing in a combined Currys / PC World format this year, the others being Blanchardstown and Airside in Dublin and Cork. We'll end up with a full PC World format in Letterkenny and we're really looking forward to it. The store is very partially opened, with an emphasis on partially, but it gives you some idea as to what the finished product will look like

When the new store opens, can one expect that there will be opening offers on such things as laptops and accessories?? :)

I am thinking of getting a new laptop in the near future. How much of a saving can be made from their opening offers.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Thought I was tracking the thread. Still getting used to it...

Yes you can expect the full shilling in opening offers. We did it this weekend in Blanchardstown and had serious queues. Queueing started at 15.00 on Saturday for the Sunday offers. Have a look at the thread on it in bargain alerts to give you an idea of the deals. We'll have the same sort of idea in limited stock offers, probably not in the same numbers as in Blanch as Letterkenny is a smaller store, but in decent enough numbers anyway. If you're happy to do a bit of queueing there will be a lot of value but I would expect Letterkenny to be a bit less work than at Blanchardstown in the queueing stakes. You can expect the grand opening activity in the latter half of October. I'm still waiting for a confirmed date. Hope this helps

Nobody's forcing you to wait. There are plenty of other places to buy from in the meantime if it's so urgent.

They've about 15 laptops on sale in there now, good offers too.

Happy to report that the store opens tomorrow morning. Looks well, the laptop range has increased from 20 odd to 70. There's a much expanded desktop range and Apple is there too. And so is Ipad. Would appreciate any feedback

What time's it open at? Planning on getting a laptop so might take a run down tomorrow some time

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 631 ✭✭✭ootbitb

    no fanfare so no bargains?

Opens at 09.30 this morning We're not doing any grand opening stuff for the moment but I think there'll be no shortage of decent choice and value

That just shows a certain amount of contempt for Donegal people imo.

Didn't see you post the same when you had one of your stores open In Dublin (?) recently.

You're misunderstanding me. We've just opened the store this morning and the grand opening will come later. We did exactly the same in the dublin stores.

So we can expect something like this before the end of the month :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭Currys PC World: Declan

There'll be a big opening event to encourage as many people as possible to visit the store. We haven't finalised the timing or the details yet

Is there a more cost effective way of reaching a wide audience in Donegal ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

YOu might reach a large number of people in Donegal with highland radio yes but is it the right demographic that you are aiming for?

Now i'm not saying that the only people that listen to Highland are old biddys with cats as friends but a lot of them are. Best thing maybe would be an online challange of some kind?

Relatively cheap, not as cheap as a radio ad yes i know but you get the word out there and get people talking.

A full/half page add in Letterkenny post possibly ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭Currys PC World: Declan

When you look at the reach that Highland has, it has a much cheaper cost per thousand than any paper ( they'll probably try to charge me more now ! ). So, if the message is simple, radio is a better option. Press really works well when you have a more complicated story to tell, but regional press, not only in Donegal but across the country, is horrendously expensive. And I wish that boards was free......but it's better value than a paper ad for sure.

I've still got my marketing team working away. We may end up doing both

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

I'll wear a curry's promo t-shirt and get snapped in as many papers as i can if you cut me a deal!?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭Currys PC World: Declan

But what would you say on the shirt to get maximum media exposure ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,852 ✭✭✭homer simpson

How's about doing what you's done down the country, doing a mock wedding! that got loadsa media coverage, in all the national papers ect.... the fact that the couple got 15grands worth of stuff helped to, hell i'd even do it for that :D

That way when people see it they automatically think of the "Where in the World? PC World!"

(first 20 seconds of this video will sum up what i think)

    :pac::pac:

on second thoughts 15 grands worth of stuff.......

Homer, it was a national competition and we had entries from everywhere - and pleased to say that we got publicity everywhere too. Presumably you saw the winning couple and it was a lovely story. They're well pleased obviously. I'd plead poverty on doing it everywhere, we're doing 5 of these combined stores this year and I don't think I could extract € 75 k's worth of products out of suppliers. If I could.....

Danniemcq, that only covers PC World. It's a combined Currys & PC world so you'll have to cover both. Tell you what I'll do ( and this responds to the online challenge bit ) best slogan for the t shirt gets another € 100 off whatever deal we're doing on a TV, Laptop, Domestic Appliance and so on. You'll need to be spending € 200 minimum.

Winner announced on the Wednesday before the grand opening. Which is 3 weeks away.

Thought you were gonna try an pull a fast one... leave the grand opening to coincide with the Jan sales...

On a related note, IT shop local to me is pretty competitive on pricing with you guys on laptops, and knocks your socks off (15 -20% cheaper) on the inks that I use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

Currys/PC World do the if you find it cheaper within X miles they'll refund and give you extra 10%. Seen it in there when i was in. Might be worth a look ...

Don't know about Currys/PC World. I've dealt a good bit with them but when there's a problem their experts are not so expert. I've had a few relatively minor problems with laptops I've bought both in PC World in Dublin and Belfast and in both cases the repair centres got it completely wrong. I now stick to a local business where the guys really know their stuff.

Why did you buy from them again when you had dealt with them a good bit and you were not satisfied?

I didn't, in both cases the clients I was working for used them for all their IT supplies.

Just to balance things out after killerbeg's post here. I have loads of stuff in the house here all bought from Currys in Derry. The only thing I ever had a problem with was a PC I bought five years ago. It came with a one year guarantee and on the last night of that year at approx 11.00pm, the hard drive gave up. I called the Tech-Guys and they came out a couple of days later and fitted a new hard drive under the guarantee. That is why I have bought loads more from them since.
