    I switched on my gmail account this morning and there was an invitation to join Google voice-their new Skype like service,I installed the required plug in and made a call to my own mobile-no charge requested.
    Checked my gmail account two hours later and Google voice has vanished .
    it was good while it lasted.

    Weird, I noticed the same. Saw it couple of days back, tried it, and now it has disappeared.

    I still seem to have it.
    Perhaps under Settings set your language to English(US).
    Then sign into chat and the Call Phone option is activated.

    However I haven't used it so I don't know if it actually works. There is a charge for it although calls to the US and Canada are free for 2010. Seemingly they have "insanely* low rates" for International calls.

    * The usual marketing-speak bullshit.

    Seems to work as DeepBlue mentions.

    It lists a price for calls to Ireland @ $0.19 per minute, but it rang my phone without me having any credit or whatever.

    Phone helpfully tells me that I missed a call from Escondido, California.

    It showed some 10c credit here until I attempted to phone my landine ..... with the phone ringing and not answered 8c seemed to be deducted.

    Look carefully at the info in the window to see the credit that is applied to the account initially .... in my case 10c
