    Dear Ladies!

I am an MSc student at the Dublin Institute of Technology. I am currently conducting a research on body attitudes, infant feeding methods, and attitudes to breastfeeding in public among women living in Ireland.

If you choose to participate (I hope you will :), this survey will take you approximately 7-9 minutes. This study is anonymous, and all answers are confidential.

You will be asked to fill out a number of questions which will relate to your body attitudes, your preferred method of infant feeding, and your feelings about women breastfeeding in public. Some of the questions might sound repetitive, but they form a part of well-recognized constructs used successfully in numerous questionnaires carried out in other countries. The questionnaire contians around 70 questions, but they are not difficult. Your help will definitely contribute to a better understanding of contemporary Irish society.

I ask you that you respond honestly to the questions, as the validity of the study will depend on your honest answers.

If you have questions or concerns about this research, please contact me at liberateyourbreasts@gmail.com.

Prior to starting this thread I contaced the forum's moderator, Silverfish, who gave this research a full aprroval. I hope you will find my research interesting and valuable.

This is the link to the survey:

I will be most obliged if you decide to participate in my research!!!

    Thank you!

    Thanks Girls!

I know the survey is quite long, but doable. For the study to be valid and of any value the questionnaire had to be this long. So, many many thanks!

I can't submit my answers because I'm required to say if I have no kids, whether I intend on having children in the future - yes or no - despite having answered that I have kids already.

I've just completed the survey. Best of luck with the research. Let us know when you have correlated the results and what you have come up with.

I teach media analysis and I have some advertising images relating to breastfeeding that I get my classes to discuss and analyse. The results are generally positive regarding breastfeeding.

I had a group of mature adults, male and female (aged 27 - 65) who were all very open to the idea of women breastfeeding in public, and felt that attitudes had shifted in recent years in a positive way.

The younger students (16 - 24) tend to be a bit more reluctant (the boys at least!) but I think a lot of that relates to the fact that they (the younger ones) are learning about sex: both sexual function and relationships, and sometimes find it difficult to differentiate between the different functions of the breasts.

For some of them, it seems inconceivable that breasts serve any other purpose than to titilate men. This has been my experience of discussing this subject with several groups over the years, and may not be representative of the experiences/opinions of the general populace.

OP, I can send you those images if you are interested. Just let me know.

I'd be interested what other sources you are using to get participants for your study? Because I imagine The Ladies Loungers wouldn't be fully representative of women in Ireland!

(did the survey by the way!)

    Done! Very interesting survey!

To Kooli. True, the Ladies Lounge is not fully representative of all women in Ireland, but that is impossible to achieve in any survey. Every study has its limitations. The main limitation of this study is: the woman has to be computer literate, and must have access to internet. That means that many women from disadvantaged groups will probably not have a chance to participate in this study.

I have my survey on a few other Irish forums, Facebook, in another section of Boards and among employees of some companies and institutions where age, nationality, education, income, parity hopefully will vary.

Thanks for taking the survey :)

That was really interesting. It's stuff I've never really thought about too much before. I was surprised a little by my own answers. If that makes any sense.. :)

    Done and good luck.

I remember the furore this photo of Maggie Gyllenhaal breastfeeding caused when it was published in a magazine a coupla years back.

Some people said she should have taken her baby into the toilets to feed it!

Done. Some very thought provoking questions there alright.

Op, did you consider asking about whether the participant was breastfed themselves? One thing I have read about attitudes toward breastfeeding is that people who have a positive attitude toward breastfeeding are more likely to have been breastfed as a baby. Or at least have slightly younger relatives who they saw being breastfed when they were children.

My mum breastfed all three of us, and when we were being weaned she mashed food up... I never had formula or jars of baby food

She says that some people were horrified that she was breastfeeding though. My granny, her mother in law, could just about get her head around mum breastfeeding daughters but was very disapproving about mum breastfeeding my brother  She almost thought there was something perverse about breastfeeding a boy. I think that is really strange!

    Done:)

I mate of mine did her thesis on breastfeeding, this was years back, we studied anthropology together.
She compared Sweden and Ireland and attitudes to breastfeeding. It was an interesting read:)

Thanks for the very intersting feedback. The interest in the survey and the reponse rate are really reassuring!

    Hi Ladies,

The survey will run for only 2-3 days more if anyone is interested in participating and making their opinion be actually heard.

    Thanks!

    Galwaymother,

I will include it in my next research :)

    Thanks for sharing.

I tried to do it but I couldn't answer number 28. When you have a new baby, how do you intend to feed her/him? because I don't ever intend to have one and there wasn't an option to say not applicable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭GeckoOnTheWall

    Hi Reenie,

question 28 is not a required one (no red asterix beside it), so if you don't intend to have more/any children, please ignore that question and proceed with the survey as normal. Thanks.

Whoops sorry I didn't realise. I blame the late hour! Well I have gone back and done the survey. Thanks! :D
