If there was a little button under your username that was coloured blue for a boy or pink for a girl would you use it to let people know whether you are male or female?

Then I could pretend I was a lady!

There are no ladies on the internet. Only porn whores.

Too many would take the piss for it to work properly.

Just two options is hardly politically correct. I think we'd need something along the lines of

    Male
    Female
    Transgender
    Eunuch
    Undecided
    Tar.Aldarion

I'd make mine pink just to confuse people...

My previous incarnation, Strange Loop, was a gender neutral creation, no overtly female posts, but with a love heart for an avatar, who amassed profile visitors at 10 times the rate I drew as a male poster.

    Odd.

I wouldn't push the pink button if I was a lady.

Can a male be a porn whore?

Meh. I'd do it. A few killjoys would ruin it maybe, but i'd say most people would be honest.

Judging by that post, it is you & not the situation, that is odd.

As long as its tastefully done, you could have info like cup size and relationship status pop up when moused over

    No because

    a) who really gives a crap if I'm male or female?
    b) why would I perpetuate the artificial idea that pink is for women and blue is for men?

They're just generally accepted designated symbols for the genders. The same as the words 'women' and 'men' are artificially designated symbols for same.

Why get het up about them?

It might cause difficulties if men were not able to find the female buttons?

Because young girls in our society live in a sea of pink. It's a nonsense, a complete fabrication. In the 1800s, pink and red was considered too aggressive a colour for women and calming blue was considered more appropriate.

Regardless, I find our obsession with pointing out and exaggerating the differences between men and women unnecessary, damaging and really quite pointless. Who cares if the person posting is male or female? Is Boards some sort of pick-up joint? Or is it that we want to be able to pre judge and dismiss people's posts on the basis of their gender?

Gah, I'm over-reacting but man this part of the internet really p1sses me off!

There's no need for a gender button. Now, a drunk button wouldn't be the worst idea...

This is what I may have elaborated on earlier had I bothered. Right on, sister/brother/other :pac:

    Agreed.

    Vive le difference.
Who cares if the person posting is male or female?
It tends to come out in the long run anyway.
Is Boards some sort of pick-up joint?
    Can be.
Or is it that we want to be able to pre judge and dismiss people's posts on the basis of their gender?
As I said above, I conducted a little social experiment of my own and noticed the difference in poster reactions. And I don't think the ladies should press the pink button. (and I don't mean in the Dudess sense).

I get all the above, I just didn't get the emotional reaction to a particular symbol, be it colour/word/phrase or whatever but I think I see where your coming from.

You can tell a lot of people's genders from usernames/avatars/posting style. There have been a few surprises though!

Not that it matters. I'm an equal opportunities pervert.

It would make sense to have it I suppose.

Some posters have got confused with my gender. They think I am male. I have to state I'm a girl to avoid confusion.

Yeah but it's not a big deal is it? It's not like they're trying to have sex with you.

    Actually, this IS AH....

Not that much effort though to correct someone if they think you're male!

The admins should consider it for next year's April Fool's prank
