Wait until the Tattoo convention in Late October because there will be artists that specialise in portraits attending it.

    Got any names?

Have a look at Justin Russells portfolio apart from him its a trip to england to see someone like Jason Butcher or Bez, unless you want some "sort-of-looks-like...." tattoo that is. A great portrait is one of the hardest forms of tattoo to do.
You dont want to feature here:

    or have something like this:

I agree with Justin Russell. Remis from Prime tattoo is also great but you will be waiting a while to get an appointment with him.

Joe Myler in Waterford is phenomenal - http://www.jmdsbodyart.com

And if you want someone Dublin based, I'd recommend either Marcus in Red Dragon - http://www.reddragontattoo.ie or Remis in Tattoo Prime - http://studio.tattooprime.ie/

They're all amazing artists. But as someone already said, the Dublin Tattoo Convention would also be a wicked place to check out some different artists.

Joe Myler is a great tattoo artist and Japanese / asian and Black and grey are his strong suits. He's good at recreating an illustrative style image of a person but his portraits are his weakest part IMO.

I wouldn't be impressed by the portrait work Marcus in Red Dragon has done either to be honest, wonky looking lines on the child-piece.

Having looked at the Dublin Convention, there are no stand out names and the portfolios I did look at (quite a few of them) were average enough and none had a high quality portrait artist.

I wouldn't set your heart on getting a portrait there, in fact I'd advise against it. I've been tattooed at conventions many times but always chose my artist based on reputation and or a stunning portfolio in the style I was looking for.
