Seriously though, what's wrong with salt, exactly?

I mean, if one doesn't have high blood pressure (in fact I have low blood pressure) and if one drinks lots of water, is there anything wrong with liking seasoned food?

No. Salt to taste. The whole thing about the dangers of salt have been taken totally out of proportion. Obviously, there are limits, and it's possible to salt to dangerous levels if you live on salty ready food/takeaways, and add more yourself.

But the sodium guidelines are based on possibly hypertensive couch potatoes. If you know you have blood pressure, and/or if you exercise hard enough to scrape salt crystals of your face, then you need a lot more salt than the RDA.

The one thing I'd watch is processed food where salt and sugar are mixed (like in cornflakes or sweet and sour sauces) as that combination is addictive and can lead to you eating far more salt that you would ever sprinkle on your eggs.

This (long) article is a really good review of the evidence:

    http://www.junkscience.com/news3/taubes.html

Gary Taubes won the National Association of Science Writers: Science in Society Awards for this piece. He's won it so many times now he's no longer eligible.

TL;DR: Basically the science is all over the place, there's no consistent result showing that salt does anything bad in and of itself, more likely that people who consume a lot of salt are more likely to consume a lot of processed and fast food, and we know refined carbohydrate causes hypertension and can reverse it controlled studies.

Having said that, I think having unusually strong salt cravings (like covering everything you eat in it) is probably a good sign of some kind of mineral deficiency (possibly potassium). That's just my speculation though, don't have any studies to back that up.
