Hi, i'm looking for a little advice, basically, i have some live-in shift work coming up for the next about 5 weeks. Now, i will have down time during the day/evening, a couple of hours here or there. So i'm talkin about net usage of 1-2 hours a day, 3 days a week. Yes i could live without it, but it would be handy if it was doable!

I was wondering about one of them internet sticks. But the info from each provider is very confusing. Especially for pay as you go. Basically, Vodaphone looks like a good deal, because you get the stick free, but it's not clear if you could just cancel it then, after a months usage. I have the internets at home, so would not need the stick after this period of use.

Any help/suggestions/clarity on this would be gratefully received. Bear in mind, i am not very technologically minded!

    thanks

I would go for Meteor, if you're anywhere in a city\populated area.

    7.5GB per month for €20.

USB Modem is €49 from the likes of Xtra Vision, if you value your anonymity, just hand over cash, buy credit, connect.

..or €19.99 refurbished, from Meteor. Delivered.

Despite people on boards moaning about the allowance, for normal surfing, email, MSN etc.. 7.5GB is ok.

3, if you buy one of their modems, they have the following tariffs.

    Mobile Broadband Daily 500MB
    €5.00

    Mobile Broadband Weekly 2GB
    €10.00

    Mobile Broadband Monthly 1GB
    €15.00

    Mobile Broadband Monthly 7.5GB
    €25.00

    Mobile Broadband Monthly 20GB
    €35.00

    ---

Comparatively, 3 charge more for the 7.5GB package. Note that both networks count down and up traffic as part of your allowance.

The problem with 3 is, in the late evening, the service can be really really bad.

Threads like this don't exist for any old reason:

    ---

I have used both networks for about two and a half years and I have to go one month with 3, one month with Meteor, just to get some sanity back from using 3, extra bandwidth is great, but there's not much point paying for more if you can barely use it..

    ---

The Meteor modem is a Huawei E180, a very straightforward and sturdy modem.

Depending on your location, the Meteor modem should work, even when plugged into the side of a laptop or PC, in the middle of a room, which is not the case with 3..

thanks for that amalgam, yeh i saw the meteor one too, it just seems like 49$ is a lot to pay for the stick! might try and buy it online, but then i won't have it for my first shift :( Also, it's so hard for a luddite like me to differentiate all the plans and the allowances and stuff, but i don't think i will use that much MB as it will only be 3 days a week, so the 7.5GB should be loads

just don't want to pay through the nose for something i'm just gonna use for a month.

Stay clear of 3 seems to be the message!

Well, the internet in a stick works! I'm using it right now :D Surprisingly easy to set up and start using. The instructions seem a bit confusing on all the sites especially as regards pricing, but the meteor one came with a good step-by-step guide of how to top up and that.

And the 7.5GB seems like loads - just for surfing/email etc. I suppose if you were using it for your main internet, downloading stuff you might get caught short, but if you're not using all day every day seems to be pretty good! I suppose i have done maybe 5-6 hours of surfing/bit o facebook/short vid here or there, and i'm only down to 7.42gb, so should keep me going for a while!!

Highly recommended!! And thanks again for the help
