I've just accepted my course for primary teachin in pats, starting in september. I'mj really lookn forward 2 it but the acc...ugh
I went up with me parents to get things sorted today nd am in a kind of dilemma. I'm aware that the acc up dare is really crappy and very basic. I'm wondering, as a lad who loves his electronic stuff, is it worth it to live without it while staying in pats. Would anyone( current or former student) have any advice on why i should stay there for first year. Its really crappy to be honestly and cant see myself enjoying there. Should i go and stay somewhere else. Any advice would be grately appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Shane

I'm going into second year in pats this year and I stayed in campus last year! I think its the best place to live, you make loads of friends! Ok it is a bit old fashioned and basic but you hardly notice that when you live there! Its so handy being so close to the college as well :):)

Right lads. Going into 2nd year in Pats. Lived on Campus. No lie, best experience of my life. Not going to lie, it is basic, but seriosuly you forget to notice after Freshers week. Campus is 100% the place to be. You get to know everyone so quickly and make friends no matter what sort of personality your have.

    Pros:
    Meeting people.
So close to the college, literally you can get up at 9:05, and be sitting down in a lecture by 9:10.
So close to the Football pitches if you're into sport.
The craic had around the place all year round.
Lads and Girls on Campus mix together so well. (take that whatever way you want ;) )
I really cant emphisise how important it is to put yourself out there and try to mix, and campus really helps that.

    Cons:
SECURITY! Bane of your life for the year. They try and throw you out of the womens houses after 11. If you're caught you never get fined or anything, they just give out to you and tell you to go home.
Drink. They don't allow alcohol on campus. However, its no problem smuggling it in, just throw it into a backpack. You'll learn all the tricks of where to drink etc. as you get through the year.
Basic. It is basic, no doubt. While there is only 2 showers on ever floor, you'll find you're never waiting for a shower. There is 1 kitchen for each house and then a joint kitchen between Moville-Clonmacnoise, Clonmacnoise-Lismore, and Glendalough-Bangor.

NB: Bring a mini fridge. You will need it. I wouldn't keep food in the fridges. People will most likely take it. :P

If you have a place on Campus trust me take it up.

Nope im afraid its random selection as far as I know. If you dont get campus, make sure to get up there early, and mix! One regret from first year is that I didnt get to know some of the off campus lads and lassies well throughout the year, and only really got to know them in the Gaeltacht. So if you're not lucky enough, seriously head up in the first week, don't be afraid to just walk into campus and start a conversation with a random person. Takes a lot of balls to do, but to be honest you're better off doing it as early as possible before people get comfortable with one group of freinds. At the start everyone mixes with everyone until you find the people you are most comfortable with. Thats why campus is so handy, so many different types of people around. Some you click with others you dont.

No problem, any advice you all need, just ask and I'll help if I can.

I did Irish and History and really enjoyed both courses. Would definitly reccommend History ahead of Irish as it was enjoyable throughout, whereas there was one or two Irish modules that I wasnt keen on. Darragh Keogh (History lecturer) is a genious. Great lectures, really helpful, and enjoyable. I had Marian Lyons as a tutor, and she was fantastic. A bit scary at first but really nice, and a serious fountain of knowlege, with a knack of getting the best out of all the students.

English is meant to be pretty good as well. Low fail rate, good lectures, but a decent amount of work.
Geography is tough enough, but dont let that put you off. All the subject involve a bit of work, but my advice i just to stay on top of them. You'll have plenty of time to do assignments, but dont leave them to the last minute. I can tell you the night before assignments were due in Pats were stressfull nights :P

As for the others, it would be wrong of me to judge as I dont have and first or much second hand experience of them.

Anyway, if you have any other questions, dont be afraid to ask, im sure there are other students here who'd be delighted to help also.

I'm really keen on Irish these days, pretty much because we had the best Irish teacher in 5th and 6th yr, so ill definitely be taking that as a subject. I was also thinking about geography, but would I find it difficult as I haven't done it for the leaving cert? I'm not sure what I'll take as a 3rd subject. Am I right in saying I cannot take education? History and Human development are my two possibilities at the moment. Can't decide between the two!

My GF did Arts last year and Did Irish, Human Development and Geography.

She found Geography a bit difficult, but is keeping it on in second year ahead of H.Dev because there was some parts of Philosophy she didnt like. So really it all depends on the person. As for fiinding it dificult because you didnt do it for the leaving... I'd say it wont make a huge difference, but you might have to put in a little more of an effort then others, because as far as I could see, some of it was just like the leaving, except in way more detail. Earthquakes and the like.

I would be biased as I did pick history myself, but I loved history. You only have 4 Essays all year to do, 2 first Semster, 2 in the 2nd. Then 3 exams. 1 first semester, 2 in the 2nd. Its tough enough but definitly not going to kill you. I suggest trying to get to at least one lecture of each subject you're interested in the first week, to sample all of them.

Well you pick your subjects, and then you can change withing a reasonable time. A week, a week and a half. Usually there is no problem. Your timetable shifts around a bit, but nothing major. A good few people do it. They'll tell you all about it anyway once you get there dont worry.

Well you do both in Human Development as far as I know. We definitly do both as part of our B.ed course.
    Im not certain though.
As for how long it takes for the info to be sent out, im not sure. It was around the 8th last year alright i think, but mine never came! I e-mailed the college though and everything was alright.

Seriously I know its a long wait, and all your friends will be heading off to college, but just enjoy the rest of the summer. There is no need to be worrying about things now. Picking Pats was the best decision ye ever made. Fact.

I was a first year student on campus last year too and I would say definitely go for it! I solely went there for the friends aspect of it, it is and will remain to be, the best way to meet new people. Forget about all this "no appliances" crap that they talk about, you can get away with loads of things (I had a tv, kettle, mini-fridge in my room :pac:). I def agree with DDC1990 about the mini-fridge, there was incidents last year of food being stolen, and it's a bit frustrating when you don't know who the culprits are! Sure the place is a bit basic but it's sufficient! The rooms are extremely big too (I actually happened to have the smallest room in my house but I would still consider it to be really big!). When I first moved in I was like "Oh god what am I going to do sharing a shower and bathroom with other people" but it was actually grand, I don't know why I was so nervous! I also miss sitting out in the hallway at 4am talking to randomers walking by (that's the great thing about campus, it's so random!). dalington10 since you're male, I'd think you have a greater chance of loving campus, all the lads last year were like a little family in Lismore!

Also please don't do Irish! Unless ye are gaeltacht applicants, I suggest ye don't do it. Its very monotonous and difficult... you'd have to really love the language to be interested while doing the course! I couldn't wait to give it up this year! Doing English now instead (which I would advise ye to do!)

I was thinking about doing Irish! I'm not a Gaeltacht applicant but I do love it :S lol. I'm 61 on the waiting list for campus accommodation. Are my chances slim?? ha

If you love it you might like it then! :) I despise the subject in every shape and form! :pac: The Irish seminars are grand because the work is easy enough to do but in academic Irish you do all this poetry and stories sh**e and it's really boring! You can go for it though if you like and then drop it if you don't like it next year! :)

Em in regards to accommodation, I'd say hold on for a little while. A friend of mine got rejected then went up to Dublin immediately the next day looking for a place to stay. She was contacted then like a week afterwards and was offered a room but she had already found somewhere else at that stage! Wait about a week I'd say or else contact them yourself in a week! :)

Having got accomodation and all, do ye think that i could sneak in, lets say, a mini-fridge and tv into my room after two weeks?? Would any of the management notice? Is there any spotchecks? It couldn't be that bad as everyone makes out.... anyone got any previous experiences of smuggling stuff onto campus haha???:D:D

Haha ya of course. Everyone had something or other smuggled in :P

Most people just had a mini fridge, but some of the Cailíní went overboard altogether, Full Fridges, Mini Ovens, Kettles, Toasters, George Formans, Microwaves! :P

No spot checks, even though they threatened it once. Only thing they take off you is Alcohol if they catch you. Jus throw it in a suitcase or under some clothes and you're grand. Even better, just drink it before they can see you with it :P

I don't mean to be mean lads, but we're straying slightly off the point of the forum here :P

Wikipedia tells me that St. Pats is linked to DCU. Maybe head over to the DCU forum and start a "St. Pats" thread like Mary I has in the UL forum :)

this is irrelevant to what you just said and the the thread altogether but I wanted to ask if theres places for everyone is the subjects they choose for the B.A course. I want to do Irish, human development and either geography or history. Am I guaranteed a place in those subjects or is it a first come first serve basis?

    Ha thats grand.

Ya never heard of anyone being denied a place in a course. you should be fine to get whatever subject you like.

Seriously get excited now. Ye'r about to have a serious year if ye let yerselves go and have the craic.

Ok guys, I'm going to have to lock this for now. I'm going to get on to the DCU mods and see if they'd be okay with having it moved to their forum and reopened.

If it got enough traffic, maybe it might get a sticky.

Hey guys, I've moved this thread into DCU, and ye can use it as a general St. Pats discussion thread now.

Daysha, would you mind editing the title? I forgot to :P

    Also, Mary I rules!

Ring admissions, they'll tell ya it out straight and if ya give them a good enough sob story might even bump ya up the list! I know last year that so many people on the list just went and got houses that they actually ended up with a few spare rooms on campus so id say if ya hold out you'll get in...

Don't blame me if it doesnt work and your out on the street though!! :D
